    Gc.com Down??

I'm getting a server error when I try to display a map of caches I searched for..
  2. I have to agree with the previous poster. I too would be asking, "why have you brought me here." What is so special about your front yard? The novelty of finding coords on a GPS alone, wears off pretty quick. But bringing me to a beautiful view, a park I didn't know existed, a quiet trail in the woods, a hidden theme based treasure, or something comparable, this is what I love. There is a big difference between an "easy" cache and a pointless one. You can put a very easy cache in a great location. You can still put good things in it. I really don't see the point when there is nothing in the cache but a log book, and nothing special about the location. These caches are thick around here, and I think people just want to score "finds." The trouble is, there is nothing in the page description letting us know it has not view and nothing good inside. You go there expecting something. The good ones ARE getting lost in the junk. Recently I pulled a garbage bag out of ditch with a plastic container inside that held McD's toys and plastic junk.... for what?
  3. I'm feeling frustrated with the whole sport now, from one bad cache. I spent hours in the rain to find... what? To find a silly plastic container in a garbage bag. In the container was plastic McD's junk and other stuff not even worth looking at. What is the point of this?! I remember logging in caches in Alaska, 2000 feet up overlooking the ocean, sharing the experience with pen and paper. I remember finding exciting things in the boxes and following cool themes. Has geocaching cheapened? Anyone can put some junk in a box and through it in a ditch after markign some coords.... geeeesh.
  4. I love the challenging caches, and not because of a silly puzzle. I'm talking 5+ terrain. If you are interested in one, I placed one on a lake in the Yukon Territory of Canada. Read about it in Robert Service poetry.
  5. Maybe I'm remembering having the ability to list a bunch of caches and then sort by date placed, thus finding the oldest. But can't even do this now... anyone remember?
  6. It seems there used to be a way to search for caches using options like: oldest undiscovered cache, and so on. I would like to search for tough caches no one has been able to find yet. Am I just missing this?
  7. Has Osama been caching? He needs to learn to hide them better! Now THIS is a cache: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=578&e=1&cid=578&u=/nm/20020514/ts_nm/afghan_usa_weapons_dc_2 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18407 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=18157 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=19028
  8. Then everyone can take there McToys only to there...
  9. Then how does this promote competition with the Euro system described?

  11. My "coin collection" cache in AK has been really popular. I'm still surprised at all the generous cachers that just want to contribute and make the cache grow without taking. We will tally the results at the end of the summer.
  12. Oregon's Event sounds AWESOME. Alaskans please email me if you would like to get together for a planning meeting. cjs@NOSPAMgci.net
  13. Been thinking about a cache that can only be found at night... I have a method for this, can you guess? Only problem is, we are almost all out of darkness for the winter here in Alaska. Soon you will have to stay up until 1 a.m. to even get a nice "dusk".
  14. I'm so glad that Oregon is a buffer between us and Cali! (Along with Washington, B.C. and Yukon Terr.!) I grew up in Oregon and saw how the Californians and their road rage transformed our state. Their gangs and drugs funneled into local points of "distribution" and the attitudes sifted down to the children. Now I'm in a state that's like OR used to be!
  15. I'm not talking about a terrorist here, but the same kind of idiots that have many times before made pipe bombs or done something just as stupid. These are not thinking people. When I was in high school, a class-mate was mamed because someone dropped a rock off an overpass. These kinds of people are out there, when they hear of geocaching will they act or not...
  16. I have been wondering about a scenario recently, what with caches getting blown up, that could end our sport. All it would take is a psycho going around and leaving bombs for cachers. A few people get hurt, then everyone is afraid. Has anyone wondered about a possible connection with anthrax? Seems absurd now as we are kind of a special group of people, but what about when everyone and his dog knows about the sport. I want to emphasize again that caches be hidden very well! and that we should maybe not advertize too much more, but let the word of mouth propogate the spread through our friends.
  17. I thought it would be interesting if the geocaching site had statistics for highest caches per state (population adjusted) and highest number of active cachers. I ran some quick numbers, and used a state's population vs. number of caches in the state: (lower number means more caches per pop and is BETTER!) Utah: 3460 people per cache COOL! Oregon: 5780 Idaho: 7500 Washington: 10,820 Alaska: 12,400 (maybe we need to catch up, but remember much of the population lives in areas not accessible by road to others... but infinite great cache sites here)

  19. I would like to say a big hello to everyone in the Pac NW from Alaska. We are really enjoying the sport here. Could I get the serious Alaska cachers to post a reply and let me know if you are caching in the snow? I have great plans for some new caches this summer, and can't wait for the snow to melt. Stay tuned!
  20. I've been looking at some "heavily cached" urban areas on the cache maps. Some areas have 20 different caches within 500 feet of a freeway. Is this really what geocaching is all about? (Remember location, location, location?) Is it possible that there will one day be too many caches? Is this a fad that will die out with many people, leaving thousands of caches scattered like so much litter? I hope not, but your thoughts?
