  1. Hi All, Please drop us an email and let us know what data you'd like for you GPS? We'll do our best to get it for all to use. Cheers!

    1928!

No, I haven't had the chance to go up there myself since the old "cache" was discovered. So it's still exactly where it was! Hint: It's on top of the peak! Anyway, I'll go find it as soon as I get the chance, and I'll write the exact location in the logbook of the "Skyline Path" Cache. P.S. Sorry the weather was so miserable. It really is an awesome spot!
  3. I will definately be there! This should be really fun!!

    1928!

I think that there must be quite a few of these containers floating around on our mountains. And I think that I'll write the exact location of the jar in the cache log book which is hidden about 10m away. That way, visitors to the cache can go have a look!

    1928!

February 2, 1928. Noordhoek Peak. And it seems that this cache is still going, 78 years later! Sure, it's not an official geocache, but the concept is the same! I placed a cache a short while back called "Skyline Path", and while it hasn't had many attempts, Mike Golby decided to go searching for it. And as it turns out, he didn't find the correct cache! Instead, he found an old container hidden on Noordhoek peak, with bit of paper and log entries from hikers dating back to 1928! Now how's that for an old cache! Check out his comments on the cache page: Skyline Path
  6. What is the countdown for? For this exact reason!!! For the hype! We're all playing right into thier hands! As for the reason behind the reason... I heard that they've been on a massive caching trip and found OVER 500 caches!!!!!! And they're only going to log them when the timer expires, and shoot in to first spot!
  7. He he he! Aaaah, the memories!
  8. Thanks! So in that case i'll probably end up getting it the states. Although it's good to support local! Tough choice!
  9. This event has officially been postponed. Too many folks heading off to the Knysna Oyster Festival etc. Apparently, he is possibly moving it to around 16th September. This sound like a great idea! Very well thought out, and should be stacks of fun. Hopefully there will be a good turnout.
  10. So the outcome of the whole story? Was it better to get it overseas or did you buy it locally? I'm thinking of getting something for myself-day.
  11. Another GIS slave this side! But we love it! Currently Table Mountain National Park employs me to check on all the caches in the area!
  12. Sorry, i'm not exactly sure what the criteria are. How many votes? Vote categories? Can we monitor the process somehow? Perhaps start another thread just for this voting subject and post updates every now and then? Results thus far? Or is it supposed to remain a secret until the end?
  13. I was always under the impression that, traditionally, geocaching went hand-in-hand with conservation? And by that I thought that most cachers were ecologically minded? Perhaps they are and it's the minority that gives the rest of us a bad name? I think we should do something about this. I had a situation earlier this year. When organising the CITO event within Table Mountain National Park, I had to sell geocaching to the park rangers. I obviously told them that we were all the conservation type crowd, and sensitive to the vegetation etc. But in the back of my mind I was hoping that on the day nobody was going to go walking over all the vegetation and straying off the path in order to find caches, and this in front of the National Parks head rangers (and my peers). Because that would surely give us a bad name! When I had that thought, thats when I realised that not all of us have the same ideals! And that my concerns were perhaps very justified? However, having said that, I think that most geocachers in South Africa can be commended and in general we are lucky to have a great bunch of people with a fantastic outlook on life!
  14. Wow! I didn't know about it! I'd love to be there!

Congrats Goofster! Big two zero zero! And to B&F and cachefan alike! Don't stop!
  16. Hold on tight! I could become an enemy in the next few weeks! We need some balance here! So in true SA style (according to Vespa) I shall be countering the drive-by caches and the micros in the suburbs. I will be placing several slightly tougher yet infinately more rewarding caches on the Table Mountain Range. Personally they are my favourite, but some people may tend to disagree. Keep an eye out....
  17. I'm Guilty! However, i feel that micros can be the best containers to be placed at times, and as it so happens, this is my only micro. I am still an avid fan of the good old traditional caches! Each to his own! So long as the spot is interesting and it's not just a numbers game! I'm guilty again! It was my cache and I agree completely about placing caches in safe areas! And i don't see this as a dangerous area, but maybe not at night (as is the case with many other cache areas). I think we have fantastic caches and cachers in SA! And we are only getting better! Our standard of setting caches is top notch! And threads like this only help to improve it! Cheers!
  18. I hear that the Western Cape has the best tasting soil! But I could be wrong?

Well done B&F and GS&Dogs, always close on one anothers heels! Congrats on the double century!
  20. I am in agreement, if the cache is placed in a sensitive area then that needs to be mentioned on the cache page with precise instructions on how to reach the cache and exactly what route to take. Whilst we want to explore many beautiful places, we want to do so without impacting on the ecology. Place the cache if you feel that it's right. Otherwise, don't. Cheers!
  21. This is a great idea! But could be difficult to rate! Because one would feel that you may only vote for a cache if you have been there? No voting for caches just by hearing that they're great? Maybe then percentages? Tough call! If 5 people have visited a certain cache, and all 5 give that cache thier vote, then should that beat a cache that has obtained 10 votes but has been visited by 30 people? mmmmm? We'll have to rack our brains for this one! Perhaps once the categories are finalised, then folks can nominate caches for those categories. We will then have a list (with links to the cache page?) of caches submitted for each category. Its then up to folks to visit those caches if they want to. Then each team gets one vote per category, thereby selecting the winner. As suggested, this would be great to have on QFC's page? They could take the nominations, post the lists and put a voting system in place thereby monitoring that everyone only has one vote? This would be a challenge, but would it be possible QFC? If so, you guys would be heros!

Congrats to Batsgonemad family! And to all those who reached milestones at the CITO event.... there were a few! And a big well done to South African caching for having TV&M on our team! Entering the big league! Seriously, well done TV&M on leading the way and doing it in style!
  23. I was looking in COMPLETELY the wrong place!!! Wow, you're right, not that tough after all. But very frustrating for me nonetheless! I'm just so glad to have finally found it! Thanks guys!
  24. Well, i'm sure everybody has been to the Top Billing cache in CT. And most visits were in the first month or so! On a slightly different note: did you know that 19 different travel bugs (and counting) have been dropped off at a cache in Silvermine. At a cache that has yet to be found! (I'm referring to the CITO event, of course) That must be a record of some type?
  25. I'm heading out to move it next weekend! My cache is definately easier than vespa's. Unless, his slips into the river? oops. I mean, never! By the way, see you're having an event in Hogsback? That should get things going for you!
