  1. I have a 60CSX, and was trying to load as mucha s possible onto the cache waypoint as possible before a road trip. But my problem is, you can only load 1000 waypoints onto the GPS, and you can't store waypoints on th SD card as far as I know. Also you can only store about 30 characters in the "comment" space. so thats enough for a few basic details as outlined by Vespa, and about the first 20 or so characters in the hint for example. But, for those of you who are interested, you can create thousands of POI caching points, which can take a much larger comment. I.e. you can store much more information about the cache. Yu can do this using a macro in GSAK as explained by Vespa and then using Garmin's POILoader. If there's anyone interested, I'll post more info in the new year. Have a good Christmas everyone!
  2. Excellent idea! Count me in! Last week we did a bit of a clean-up of the Sandspruit River in Sandown. (Near "Park and Free Innes") We managed about 10 black bags of rubbish, but there is so much work to be done there! It might not be a bad place to work? There's also a nearby park that we could picnic. My offices are right there and I could organise for us to use the sand volleyball court for a bit of after clean-up festivities? I could maybe also organise for our black bags to be taken away. Just an option? Either way I'll be there! Well done M@x! Good idea!
  3. Enjoying this! A good shake up is always fun! Now, if only i could coulf find a way to get 700 caches this holiday, then i might also be in the money!
  4. You suspect correctly! <-- open mouth, ready for breakfast!!
  5. Aha! Very observant Mr GR! Busy moving in to my new home coordinates right now! So I should be into the swing of things ASAP! This place isn't SO bad after all.... Looking forward to meeting a few of the guys sometime!
  6. Just another quick thought. We have had a great boom of new cachers and a serious boom of cache placements over the last year, that maybe things just seem to be so slow because we are comparing to the unusually active last couple of months? I know it's not an excuse, but maybe a partial explanation?
  7. Hi All, I've been so scarce lately! Just got a GPS again and ready to get back into the swing of things! I agree with C&C, go for quality and place fewer caches, rather than place stacks that we can't maintain. On that same note, great work by QFC on implementing the hide to find ratio. Although I'm not sure what each fruit actually means, the concept is great in that it should encourage those with a low hide count to place a few more. Once I scope out out JHB, I promise to place a few more!
  8. CONGRATS GUYS! So excited for all three of you! Wishing you all the best for the start of a new and very exciting part of your lives! God bless! R & T
  9. I agree! Ridiculous concept! I had to move a whole stack of them off the CITO page earlier this year, what an irritation! Just a thought: does TDL and whoever else is involved know how the rest of the world feels about these "coins"?

Well done Discombob on reaching the big 500! And thanks for some of the best caches out there! Keep going!!!
  11. Vespa, you really do know how to make the non-geocacher feel special! I would've paid to see the look on her face when you handed over a whole pile of toys for her to carry to the EC!
  12. Thanks Vespa! Seems I am just to slow!
  13. I do indeed have a family member floating around up there somewhere - VERY observant GR!!! 10/10 Water pistol is definately a good idea! As for a GPS, I think it's safe to say that I might just have to put it on the shopping list under "Absolute Necessities" somewhere between bread and milk. Looking forward to it!!
  14. It's all so sudden!!! Handing back my state-owned GPS, and packing my bags to hassle the Vaalies for a few years!!! So, farewell fellow Caapies, you're free from any more of those pesky mountain caches! OK, maybe one more before I go? I love caching in the Cape, but how am I to know just how good it is, if I haven't tasted the fruit of our Gautie friends? Who knows? I'll just have to beg, borrow or steal a GPS and be the one to let everyone know! Tough job, but someone has to do it!!

  17. As most of my caches are on the mountain, it isn't always the easiest to do regular checks on them, but it's still nice to do the hike every two or three months to make sure that they're in good shape. But I agree, it's great when we work together to make sure that the caches we visit get some attention if it's needed! Also, I'm reluctant to place thousands of caches, because I know that I won't be able to look after them all properly

    First To Find

Maybe I'm just a typical Cape Townian, but I'd rather wait for the mad rush to pass by, and then find the cache in my own time. Now, how about those Cape Town mountain caches? Not much of a mad rush in that department......
  19. I got a job for National Parks doing some GIS, and I use a GPS to map paths quite regularly. I actually stumbled across the website by chance! Great! Needless to say, I'm probably the only geocacher in SA who doesn't own his own GPS!!! Nevertheless, GPS came first. Or is it still to come?
  20. Thanks Noddy, Finding Google Earth particularly helpful in this repect. For Kilimanjaro, I got all the waypoints for the camps and points of interest as well as the track line! Very helpful! Maybe we should get all this data together and create a proper Kili map? I'm sure many people would find this a helpful map to have!
  21. So glad we have QFC to give us our very own little ranking system! Because worldwide, our top dogs (CnC) are ranked a huge.... 3169!!!! Thanks guys!
  22. During the week, I'm available as a free guide. Bring walking shoes and a torch!
  23. Is that a Table Mountain hat? mmm?
  24. We welcome everyone to the Cape! I urge you to do a few easy caches and then do some exploring and do some of the mountain variety! I will gladly accompany anybody looking for some clear mountain air! Open invitation!

    Over-equipped ?

More than once, I have taken someone caving in Cape Town and after carrying thier torches for them (which are guaranteed to be large maglights) have found upon entering the cave that the batteries are flat! So I had to give the friend my torch and I'd just use my hands and head to find all the low ceilings and sudden rocks. It's all part of the adventure! But we always had a backup plan - which is VERY important!! Personally, It's really not worth the risk. Hey, if anybody's keen, maybe a few guys would like to get together for a mild Cape Town Spelunking Caching day?
