  1. @jholly... That did it, all good now. I do not have an SD card in my unit, so that option is out. Guess in the future I'll have to double check to make sure it's working properly before I head out. Thanks again, ...Ned
  2. Thanks for the quick response! I poked around the Garmin forums before posting here and didn't see my problem posted by others. I'll give it a try and report back later.
  3. This may have happened after a recent Garmin upgrade download. All of my geocaches and waypoints are in the unit, they show up on Basecamp also. But, when I enter "find geocaches", or pan around the map, it tells me "no geocaches are found, go to geocaching.com, etc" I've never had this problem before, had the unit for quite awhile. Anyone experience this? I really don't want to reformat the thing.
  4. Thanks all, that is much easier than I thought. The cache is part of a series as you have seen, so I didn't want to remove it permanently. If the construction goes on longer, can I place a new cache using the same name about a 1/4 mile away? Or do I have to retire the old cache in everyway and start fresh?
  5. I own a cache that I temporarily disabled because the route to the cache was blocked by a construction fence. The construction is far from the cache, so it will become accessible once the fence has been removed. At present, there is no other way to ground zero. This may happen in the late Spring, I don't know. Anyway, the reviewer has contacted me about archiving it, or putting a note in the blog(?) so he won't do it the end of the month. What sort of note do I put? I think the thread on the cache listing pretty much explains why it's disabled. Is there somewhere else to post something? Is it possible to move a cache to a new location and keep the same name? Keep the same cache page with new coordinates? Know what I mean?
  6. That's great! I never have actually been able to talk to Garmin. And yes, it only happens to me when the geocaching dashboard is active. I was closing it up to move between options, but have changed to the detail view as others have done.
  7. I have found a solution. Perhaps a remedy not a cure, but it works. From the geocache navigation screen, before hitting the menu button or the find button, close the dashboard (with the compass pointer) at the top of the screen (by using the up pointer in the rocker button). The unit will now not shut down. Yay.
  8. So, there is something wrong somewhere, it isn't just me? I was starting to get paranoid. Maybe it's in the PQ somewhere? a strange line of code? I am severely ignorant in tech matters, just grabbing at straws. BTW, you'll find me again searching for answers in another thread you monitor.
  9. Thanks for the hint. Pressing find during navigation will shut it down also...sometimes. Maybe I'm overloading it by searching around for what I want. Someone mentioned this on another thread: "ALSO, recent problems with resets and crashes on gpsmap62stc, all have been fixed for me by running GARMIN WEBUPDATER application. And installing firmware update. If you find it's really not working, I got a reply from garmin after a 2 week wait which said do the following: To perform a master reset: 1. Ensure the device is powered off 2. Press and hold Page and Enter simultaneously 3. Power on the GPS while continue to press both buttons NOTE: Immediately release the power button once the GPS powers on 4. Release on the buttons once the Do you really want to erase all user data? message appears 5. Select Yes The GPSMAP 62, 62s, 62st, 62sc, or 62stc is now reset. You will want to leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data." I've done that, don't know if it will work.
  10. I bought a new map62 a week ago, and while using it to search for geocaches found that if I hit the menu button or another button to access some info, the unit would power off. This happened over and over again, but only while I'm in the hunt for a cache and I want to read the cache description, find a hint or just stop the search. Other times it works fine. I contacted Garmin and they figured it needed repair. Since it was two days old, I returned the unit and got a new one. The new one does the same thing!? Firmware is all up to date, I don't get it. BTW, how DO you stop navigating? I tried to find that menu, but well, it shuts down.
  11. I finally figured out how to view cache info on my map62. Took a lot of button pushing and searching, but I found the correct sequence. Not hard once you know what to do, but the manuals and such don't really explain how to navigate through the navigator. As far as pocket queries go, do you need a intermediary software to transfer them to the GPS? Can't just dump the ZIP file into the gpx file of the unit. I don't see any other way.
  12. I just bought a Garmin map62, and was very excited to be able to finally do paperless caching. I've loaded some gpx files onto the unit, and I have the list of caches showing, but how do I find the description page on the dashboard? What I'm seeing is like a loc file which was all I could previously upload on my old unit. I am under the impression, from reading through posts here, that I don't need a software program like GSAK, that I can simply download the file and put it into the gpx file on the unit, yes? Must a make a pocket query and download that into a software like OKMap, then move it from there to the gps? What if I only want to load up a dozen caches, seems like a lot of extra steps. I tried out GSAK for the trial period, but wasn't using it enough to justify purchasing. Maybe the info is in my unit and I just don't know how to find it? See, I'm confused.
  13. Just saw a "buy it now" new on Ebay for 325.
  14. "Again, IMO the 62 is simply a better line than the Etrex. The Etrex firmware has had tons of problems and if you read these forums it sounds like the Etrex 3-axis compass is worthless ......the 62 compass is excellent and it has a quad helix antenna which I prefer. There is also the button arrangement....I find the 62 arrangement ( same as the 60 ) much better than the Etrex joystick." Okay, you sold me. I ordered the 62. Thanks for the recommendation!
  15. Or a reconditioned one, yes. haven't seen any about yet. (Haven't looked too hard either)
  16. You made me aware of something that was staring me in the face, but which was blinded by the price drop. I really do not like touch screens! Greasy, sweaty fingerprints and accidental inputs being the big drawback. Sooo, now it comes down to the 62 and the etrex 30. I don't suppose you have one of those also?
  17. Almost two years ago, I bought a Etrex VentureHC to try out this geocaching thing I heard about. So of course, I'm hooked now and have been ready to upgrade to a GPSmap62, but at 320.00 it's still a bit steep for my limited budget. So, I get an email from Amazon today, and the Oregon 550 is on sale for 299.00. OK, so jeez, whatdoIdo? It's still around that 300.00 range, so I'm thinking it's forced the Dakota 20 down a bit, and yes, it has. The Dakota basically seems to be a smaller version of the Oregon and at the 200.00 level, it appeals to my miserly mindset. I saw a few people on the boards use both these units, the 62 and the 550, I'd appreciate the input. The camera thing doesn't really appeal to me, at this time anyway.
  18. Is there a general rule for the distances between multi-caches? Should you be able to walk quickly? a few blocks? get in your car and drive to the next?
  19. Agreed. Take them to the place you want them to visit and then to the cache location. +1 more. Use the historical site for some numbers that lead to a wonderfully beautiful location. Best of both worlds Except for the fact that a good percentage of cachers ignore multis, especially if they aren't local.
  20. Wow, this is an active board. I'm new to the boards, didn't know what to expect. Yes, I considered a multi, but I wanted to place some info with the cache describing what used to be at the site. I know I could place the info on the cache page, but it's not the same, y'know? That and as Jack said, multi-caches are not real popular. On the other-hand, it may be the best way to go on this as I'm planning this to be a series. On the pole thing, I am probably mistaken that it is copper, it's just not rusty, looks too clean, but you're right, AZ, it's a bumper, definitely. Many thanks for the input to all.
  21. I wanted to place a cache to highlight a local history spot, but the only place I can figure to hide the cache would be in a support thing attached to a telephone pole. It's a large copper plate with bands around the pole and there's lots of room between the pole and the support piece. Has anyone found similar caches, is it against some rule I don't know about? I doubt the utility company would bother it unless the pole is destroyed somehow.
  22. What's a PQ? Am I missing out? PQ=Pocket Query. As a Premium Member, if you're not using PQs, yes you are missing out. Aaah, yes, I looked at pocket queries, got confused, I'll try again. Sorry, I'm new.
