  1. Alan2, You will have to forgive me, for being a redneck. I don't think about people on this board from big cities. For instance the county here in Idaho I am speaking of has Over 8000 square miles in it It also has less that 7000 people in it. Just to get there is a two hour drive on dirt roads. The scenery is fantastic. Deep canyons (800 feet deep) And open desert. Here is a picture of the Owhyee Canyon. PS. like I said to get to the other side to find teh projected way point is a 6 hour drive. Ron
  2. Alan2, I use my GPS while hunting for Chukar. These birds are found in canyons up to 800 feet deep. Sometimes I hear them on the other side of the canyon, but there is no way to get there except to drive the long way around. I project a way point to the area the birds are in. Later when I make a hunt to the other side I can go to the projected way points. Since the birds move a lot it doesn't really matter that I am off. In my Work as a Fish and Game reservist I also use projected way points. In the spring I go out to catch Sage grouse and we put Radio collars on them. We study them to find out nesting areas and brood raising areas. A lot of times I see birds fly away from the road and land out in the sage. I project a waypoint to that area so we can have a place to start looking for it later, without going out and bothering the bird right then. Ron
  3. I work as a reservist for the Idaho Fish & Game. For the last two years I have been trapping sage grouse at night for the last three years. We trap the birds and put radio collars on them and leg bands. I have been lost every time I go out for the first two years. The desert I go to is huge and since we trap them at night and off road, well like I said I was lost and so was every one I was with. This year I got a Garmin Etrex camo. I practiced with it a bunch geo-caching. When I went out to trap this year things were a lot different. I got the locations of the leks from the F&G. I knew right where they were. I was able to do my job better because I wasn't worried about being lost all the time. I worked with four other guys that had not used them before. These guys were hooked. After we were out for several hours I would ask them which way to the truck? no one EVER got it right. Do any of you use your GPS's for work?
  4. Mine is doing it just sitting there. I have the latest software. I have writen to Garmin so far no word. I am using mine a lot right now. I have went through 6 sets of batteries this week. Like you said the link stays up but the screen dies for a moment. I am in the middle of the owhyee desert in the middle of the night with my gps. the nearest house is over 20 miles as the crow flies. I would hate to loose my truck if the thing dies. Ron
  5. I have noticed a few times that my etrex camo is doing something strange. It is going blank for just a second when I bush a button I am not sure which one or which screen, then it comes back on. It has only done it a few times with no pattern. Has any one else had this problem? Ron
