  1. Strike Anywhere, I tried your idea, but with the "L" shaped in that came on the cord. I cut a slight curve in the top and bottom right at the offset by the metal plug. I then took two pairs of pliers and started putting a reverse bend on the plug. Heated it a little at a time with a lighter until I had about a 45 degree reverse angle. Tried it with no problems.
  2. It's the offical Garmin one. It has an "L" small end on the cord. The "L" is what is keeping it from plugging in all of the way. Thought I might be able to buy an adapter that would plug into the Oregon, and then the cord could plug in that. Have read that I can buy a phone cord with the straight end, but I'm thinking since I already have this one that an adapter might be cheaper.
  3. I guess I wasn't clear. The plug works, but it won't go all the way in by design so it falls out very easy.
  4. Well I recieved my Oregon 400t and I'm liking it sofar. BUT, I now see what people were complaining about the plug on the auto power cord. Did a quick search, but did not find anything on this topic (I'm sure that there is something, but I can't find it). Has anyone found an adapter or another solution? Thanks Tom
  5. Maybe a stupid question, but I've just ordered the 400T and was wondering how you can tell what verison of flimware it has? I'm guessing that the newer units shipped from Garmin would have the latest verison.
  6. Thanks everyone for the replies. I've decided to go with the 400T from REI. They are currently out of stock, but said I should have it by the end of the month. Can't wait! Tom
  7. I've pretty much decided that the 300 is the one for me, but I do have a few questions that you may help with. 1 I have a version of Mapsource topo that is 2005, and was wondering if I can use it. I know some of the 3d features won't work etc. 2 I like the expanded memory of the 300 over the 200 (this along I believe is worth the cost difference), but was wondering if you can turn off the compass and barometer to save batteries. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks Tom
  8. I know that that the 400 comes pre loaded with topo maps, but my question is can you view those maps on your computor? I'm thinking if not, than the 300 and extra software may be a better purchase for me. If I'm reading it right, the only difference is the pre load topo maps. Opinions??? Thanks, Tom
  9. Thanks, I thought that the basic system was the same as the Vista's but wasn't sure.
  10. I've done a search, but can't seem to find the answer. Does the Legend HCX seem to have the same problems as the Vista HCX concerning the track and speed errors at slow (walking) speeds?
  11. Thanks again. That is exactly what I needed to know. I guess in the future I need to look a little harder. Tom
  12. Thanks CenTexDodgerm, that what I was wanting to know. I wasn't aware of the free upgrade though. Is it listed on Garmins site? Was on it yesterday checking out the available software and did not notice the upgrade. Thanks again, Tom
  13. Well this forum has just about convinced me to buy the Garmin 76 cx or csx. Now a question on software. Forgive me if this has been covered already, but searches have left me still confused. Now the question, according to Garmins site if MapSource City Select North America v7 is purchased you have to unlock it. Is there a charge for unlocking? They seem to indicate that you can only unlock certain parts is this true? NT seems to be just put in DVD player and away you go. Is the major difference that one CS installs on your computor, and two NT you have to play every time you want to create new maps. Sorry if this is a basic question. Thanks, Tom
  14. Ok let me throw another wrinkle in the mix. After doing more research, the Lowrance H2O C and the Expedition C seem to be comparable with the Garmin 76. Now the question, as anyone been able to compare the Lowrance to the Garmins? There doesn't seem to be alot of Lowrance users on this Forum, but what is here seems to be very loyal. No one local carries these, and I'm planning on going out of town to check, and was wanting as much info as possible before I go. Thanks again Tom
  15. Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'm leaning towards the 76cxs. I've been hearing good things about the Lowrance units, but there doesn't seem to be very many users here. The screen seems to be the largest, but I still needing the best reseption because of tree cover. Plus I already have the Mapsource software, plus the mounting base is already on my dash. I'm assuming that the 12v adapter is not included. Any suggestions for where to purchase one at the best price?
  16. I currently have a Legend, but I keep losing the signal in heavy tree cover. Winter in the woods is great, but Fall and Spring scouting are a problem. From what I've been reading, the 76csx and 60csx seem to have solved this problem. I already have the Mapsource Topo software for the Legend and was wondering if this is compatable with the 76csx and 60csx? Does anyone know if the display is larger on these than the one on the Legend? Thanks, Tom
  17. This may be a stupid question, but here goes. When I start to download to the Legend I get a message that all preloaded data will be lost. It was my understanding that this just overwrote the exta 8 mb, but it almost sounds like it will overwrite the base map. Is this so and if it is how do I save it for future use? Thanks Tom
  18. Well I went ahead with the purchase. Although my eye sight is not what it used to be, I can still see the display fairly well. Thank God for long arms!
  19. Dicks advertise this package for $199. It includes the Legend, auto mount, 12v adtapter, Topo software, computor adtapter, and carring case. On the surface this is an excellent deal. My question is how hard is the screen to see? My eyes aren't quite what they used to be. Is it anywhere clese to what Garmins demo on their site is. Does anyone know how it compares to the 12xls? I have this unit and just want to upgrade to mapping. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom
  20. I'm using a serial contection for my Garmin, and the first time I used it it worked fine. Now I can't get info to transfere between to two. I'm wondering if the cable is bad, or if my connection info is correct. Has anyone else experienced this?. Any info would be helpful. Thanks, Tom
