  1. I think what Mopar was trying to allude to was the name of the site you posted is "CASH Hunting Accident Report Center", which if you say it out loud without reading it could be "CACHE Hunting Accident Report Center." While Mopar's suggestion was a stretch at best, this thread is now off-topic to the original post (that asked "What is the overall feeling within the group about safety vests being used when caching?"). Please take it back on-topic or it will need to be closed. If you would like to continue the discussion as it is right now, feel free to start one (or participate in one if it is already there) in the Off-Topic forum. Well thanks for the offer, but no thanks. Please remove my membership to Groundspeak and Geocaching.com as I see no reason to continue to be part of this uncontrolled one sided insanity or how the endangering of peoples lives is taken so lightly just so a very small few can satisfy their ungodly blood lusts! Now they can mock this posting too and claim it's off topic! I quess we all know they would be signing a different tune if they or a loved one was shot and wounded or killed by one of these drunken half-witted irresponsible clowns in the woods while geocaching on public land they have a right to be on without fear for their lives.
  2. HA! If the mods think this is going off topic, just check the name of the group behind that link! Number one all I stated is that I came across this on the web today. I made no statement either for or against it. How then is this off topic? It speaks of the fact of accidents happening out there. Period! Just because you don't like something does not make it off topic!
  3. Found this site on the web today. http://www.all-creatures.org/cash/accident-center.html
  4. You can get Mapsend Topo U.S.A. version 4.20D at Radio Shack for $39.99.
  5. This is not a gc.com question. You have agreed, or will when you post your cache, that any claims by or against a geocacher are your responsiblilty. Whether you invite people on your property or not they can make claims against you for personal injury incurred on your property. I disagree, I believe it is a very valid question for gc.com. I myself like others have 40 acres of heavly wooded land surrounded by miles of connecting woods and have thought about placing some caches on my 40 acres. But like above poster I am concerned also about liability. And it would be nice to hear what others may offer in fact and advice to such. It seems like every time you turn around today someone is suing someone for something no matter how trival or insane. Or in all in all truth of fact is it just best to only hide caches on public land due to this insanity?
  6. I have had both a Garmin and now a Magellan Gold which Wal Mart sells for $199.00 everyday. I have found the Gold to be much better under tree cover. I know there will be those who say different, but I can only speak of my personal experience with the Gold and it has been very accurate under tree cover. You can get a 256 meg SD card there too for $16.88 and Map Send Topo (version 4.20D) for it at Radio Shack for $39.99 if you need those items. Hope this helps.
  7. Radio Shack sells it for $39.99. Version 4.20D
  8. I have to agree with Benjamin's quote below; "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin Very valid quote. It's context and how you intended for it to be applied is a question. I believe Ben was refering to was surrendering to your adversaries to gain temporary safety, and in doing so, thier cause would be allowed to propogate. From one perspective, one could say that those who seek safety are cowards. I do not chose that interpretation. I look at it as folks who fight back to those who would persue thier own selfish causes. Those of would use the park to stalk childeren, to use/pedal illicit drugs, to claim it for thier gangs, or whichever illegal reasons. Rather than seek temporary safety in thier homes, they did something. They fight using the system, not through brute force. I do not believe that seeking safety is being a coward. I believe we all as citizens have the right to feel safe in our homes and when we walk down the street and when are children are at the parks playing. What I do not believe is that we give away those rights to safety, to laws which rob us good citizens of our rights to liberty because we fail to deal with the criminals who perpetrate this upon our children. Too often we seek to treat the symptom instead of the disease itself. Many Americans as do I believe there needs to be much harsher laws against those who prey upon our children. Many will disagree with me but I believe those who do prey upon our children (sexually) if found guilty should be locked up for the rest of their natural lives. No exceptions. How many agree that America has become soft on crime?
  9. I have to agree with Benjamin's quote below; "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin
  10. Yes I have to agree, it seems more and more we become a nation content on treating the symptom while leaving the disease intact.
  11. I think it's getting a bit off topic here. The poster wanted advice on getting an inexpensive camera for Geocaching, not a top of the line Digital for professional photography. Any of the name brand cheaper model digitals will do a good job for Geocaching. (Canon,Olympus,Pentax,Nikon,Sony,Fuji,Minolta.) My only suggestion is getting one that takes AA batteries so you can use rechargables.
  12. The Meridian Gold is an excellent choice for a GPSr. And I believe Wal-Mart is now selling them at $199.00 everyday. And you can get a 256 meg SD card there for $19.99 to go with it.
  13. trail hound-- Thank you for bringing up this point, it's one of those things I take for granted. The same goes for much of the wildlife people take for granted--they would not be here, or would not be around with the quality of herd (flock, whathaveyou) without the efforts of hunters. A little known fact is that the two largest lobbying organizations when it comes time to write a new farm bill are Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. It probably also is worth mentioning that should you encounter a hunter in the woods, despite what your personal convitions regarding hunting is, do NOT interfere with the hunter in any way. Many states, this is in fact illegal and could land you a nice fine, as well as seriously tarnish the reputation of geocaching among a very prolific outdoors group. It is also probably worth mentioning that trespassing is a crime also. First off I have met some very responsible hunters who abide in the law but in the area I live which is mostly forest and private land there is an increasing number yearly of hunters who show no concern for trespassing on private land well marked. In the last few years many property owners here have had to resort to private patrols of their own property due to this increasing problem. I am not against hunting, but people's property being turned into a war zone each year by irresponsible hunters who have no regard for the safety of human life needs to be addressed as well. We have seen a big increase of intoxicated hunters which frankly are a danger to us all. And let us also rememeber that taxpayers have paid for most of the state and federal lands in the U.S. not just hunters. Every citizen has the right to use these lands and responsiblity is the key and respecting the rights of private property owners as well. Hunting season (fall) is also the perfect season for geocaching, especially in the woods and no one should have to fear for their safety in doing so.
  14. Did not know about channel 2, thanks for the info.
  15. Don't know if this is the right place to post this but thought I would pass this info on. Both I and my wife each have Magellan Meridian Gold GSPr units, and my brother just gave me a pair of Cobra PR4750-2 WX EVP 2 way radios. The radios are great to take along on searches, they have a 12 mile range 10 NOAA weather channels and many other features. We tried them out in the woods and they worked great. I have listed the links below as both are sold by Wal-Mart if anyone might be interested. Cobra http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp...duct_id=3984991 Magellan Gold http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp...duct_id=2470866
  16. I have to wonder what it is with Magellan and basemaps. If you look at the forums on the web many users (owners) have complained over the years with many models of basemaps disappearing. You would think Magellan would have addressed the issue by now. I myself have never seen a post by Gamin owners of this problem, and if they have it is small in comparision with Magellan units. I have and am seriously considering going to Gamin or Lowrance when it comes time to get a new GPSr. This is my second Gold, my first I had to return the same day because there was no basemap. I contacted Magellan and they told me I would have to send it in for repair. No way!
  17. Well I can understand your frustration. Have you tried contacting Magellan support and seeing if they would provide you with a basemap you could upload to your unit? I do not know if they offer this service but it never hurts to ask.
  18. I think the only way to get the basemap you are looking for is to return it to Magellan. I don't understand why the $300.00 cost. Other than that you can see if the program Magellan MapSend WorldWide Basemap CD would work with your unit. It does not mention the Explorist. Here is a link to the info. http://www.gpscity.com/item-magellan-mapse...-cd/msworld.htm It is ashame in a way that Magellan does not make the basemaps downloadable to register owners of Magellan units. Maybe someone else on the forum can be of more help.
  19. Thanks for that little bit of humor, now everytime I use my GPSr I will be wondering if my shields are up.
  20. I have to agree with you. I was looking at a Explorist 500, but seeing as I cannot use my Mapsend software I already invested in on it I will pass. I for one am, getting a bit tired of Magellan's business practices.
  21. Wal-Mart has a good selection of card reader/writers. I bought the Kodak one and it has worked very well with all my different multimedia cards for both the GPSr and digital cameras.
