  1. I've seen that done... someone had the metal cap piece for the top of a chain link fence post and poked a hole in it. Put some wire through, wrapped the end so it would lay flat, then put the other end through a pill bottle cap. Pill bottle sat inside the fence post until I pulled the post-cap up
  2. @houndawgg: I think the sale is over... but it never hurts to check in and ask!
  3. Just keep in mind that without a premium membership you'll have to send cache locations and info to your GPSr one at a time. If you go Premium, you can send over 1,000 (in two .gpx files). Then again, if you're the kind who plans all your caching trips in advance, one at a time may work well for you. Either way, good luck with your purchase (=
  4. I've known about Geocaching for probably 3 or 4 years now. I keep up with lots of crazy technology related projects, experiments, etc (I'm a big geek and work in IT...) I think it was on Slashdot.org that I first read about caching. However, it wasn't until a work training course I took in New Jersey that I met someone who could actually take me caching. Now, I'm beyond addicted. Found 52 caches while in New Jersey (one of those in New York) and bought an Oregon 450 on Sunday. Just waiting out the crazy cold rain snap we've had down here before my wife, 8 week old son, and I can go caching here! (I'd go in the rain if there weren't a baby involved...)
  5. Awesome! I'll definitely be participating, at least in the DFW area ones. Depends on how busy work is this summer.
  6. Wow, really glad I found the last one at the local Cabela's yesterday. They gave me the display unit since it's all they had left. They were advertising the $349 price as a sale but when I mentioned the web site they were eager to accommodate.
  7. man the target website has it for the 149...to bad though, thats a great deal... Yeah, I haven't had a chance to check my local target. I saw this deal at the Target in New Providence, NJ, last week while on work travel. (I personally took advantage of the Cabela's deal on an Oregon 450 for $249 yesterday, though.)
  8. Just FYI, I saw the eXplorist GC on clearance at a Target for $99 the other day. Not sure if it's that cheap at all Targets but worth checking your local store, for sure!
  9. I went to the local Cabela's today (Ft Worth) and got the last 450 they had (had plenty of 450t and 550, of course). It was the display unit. The gentleman working immediately offered it to me at the online price, even though it was marked for $349. He was even a bit upset that the display unit was the last one left, so I didn't get a box--doesn't bother me. It's working great so far.
  10. The other thread on this deal mentioned backorder and how Cabela's is still shipping them out in a timely fashion. I'm going to hit up the local Cabela's shop today to see if they have any in stock. Played with this model last week in New Jersey--a friend (the one who introduced me to caching) loves his.
  11. So, I can easily believe 100 in a day... but seriously, how do you get 400+ in one day?? My personal best so far is 15. I've only been caching for a week and have done 15 in a day twice. It helped that I was out in NJ for a work trip and had nothing to do after 5PM but cache with trag_cachers! I recommend caching with an expert if you're new--made my first week way easier.
  12. Good luck man! Let me know if you find anything around Jackson and Henderson--used to live there and my wife and I will be visiting early this summer. I learned basic navigation with a map and compass in Boy Scouts as a kid and camping in college but never dealt with GPS and coordinate systems. All just landmark and relative distance based stuff. Your kid is lucky! I hope to do the same with my son when he's old enough
  13. Just adding to the conversation a bit of the same... I'm a new cacher and really wanted to find a TB or coin while I'm up here in New Jersey to take back home to Texas (good number of miles!) Last night I tracked down two caches that said had TBs. After dinner with an old friend, we went out to find those caches. Turns out the TBs were missing in both =/ While it was disappointing, especially since one had no finds logged since the TB was logged as dropped into the cache, it is the nature of the Trackable-game. My personal solution? I'm going to buy a batch of trackables and release them so I can (hopefully) fill the gap of missing TBs and coins. If they disappear, I can't care too much. I have more important things to worry about... like finding the next cache...
  14. I believe the Magellan eXplorist GC is on sale at most Target stores right now. MSRP is $149 but I saw it at a Target on clearance for $99. I've used the Garmin eTrex Ventuce HCx and liked it a lot too. Personally I've become addicted enough already to jump on a Garmin Oregon 450 or 550 as soon as I can find a good deal. Cabela's has a deal on the 450 right now for $250 but they're all backordered (there's another thread in this forum if you want the details.) Good luck with the decision!
  15. Whereabouts in/near Boston? If you can get to Hopkinton there's a great state park. I went there before I started caching but I'm quite sure there are caches there. (I'll be shocked if there aren't.) I've only been caching for a week and have been out on a business trip the whole time! All my finds are in New Jersey and I have one in New York. Will add my home state (Texas) tomorrow and then take every work training trip I can to get more states marked off (=
  16. @ old_school_65 : Good to know! I was thinking of ordering one but the backorder status scares me... I may try to order one this weekend (or find a Cabela's--is the deal good in store?) since it's payday tomorrow.
  17. Thanks for the reply. Tonight while I was out caching with trag_cachers I had Google Maps open for driving directions to another town and suddenly Geogache Navigator worked So I guess you are right but I found another way to refresh it haha. I like the application well enough but think a standalone GPSr with paperless caching features would be best for me. Thanks!
  18. Hey all, I'm new to caching and wanted to try the Geocache Navigator app on my BlackBerry before investing in a more heavy-duty GPS device. However, when I installed the trial of this app it never finds my location. I can search for caches by entering locations but it never gains a GPS lock. I've let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes with no luck. I have double checked that the application has permission to use my GPS and I've tried with pure GPS and GPS w/ Network Assist. Any ideas? I'd love to give this app a go before deciding I need a dedicated GPS device. Thanks in advance.
