  1. If c:geo violates the TOS for this site, why hasn't it been removed from the Android Market? I'm pretty sure the Market TOS for developers clearly states that an app distributed through the Market cannot violate any other involved party's TOS... All Groundspeak would need to do is inquire with Google and get the app removed. I'd like to note here that I would NOT like to see that happen c:geo is a really well made application and works very well. My preference would be that the makers of c:geo would correct the app to connect using the GC.com API instead of scraping.
  2. Excellent! Glad your first was so enjoyable. There will be disappointments and struggles in the first few... I highly recommend trying to find some other cachers nearby so you can go hunting with them. Really helps the learning curve!
  3. They should be relatively on par with eachother. I have a Galaxy Nexus (best Android phone out in the US right now... highly recommend it over the Droid 3) and the GPS is great for caching. But really, any high end Android phone (Droid 3, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II) and the iPhone 4S should be very competitive on GPS performance.
  4. To me, the point of a DNF is to show that you tried... and the log is a great way for people to experience more than just their own visit to a cache. I love reading about the success or struggle that the previous cacher had when I log my visits--and I'm sure the CO would get a kick out of it. After all, he/she hid the cache there because it's an interesting place to him/her.
  5. My caching bag has a new(ish) Gerber multitool. One of the small to medium sized ones with a couple of blades, screwdriver, and (of course) plyers. I used to carry a Gerber knife with a blade about 2.2" long but forgot I had it in my pocket at the airport on my way home last year =( Didn't have time to step out and mail it to myself so had to drop it into that sad, sad, sad container of contraband. Thankfully it was on sale so I didn't lose too much $. I plan to get the exact same knife before my next camping trip. I don't see how you could go hiking or camping without a knife. Just doesn't seem right
  6. Most modern smartphones have decent GPS chipsets... my BlackBerry (a Bold 9650) has the SirfStar III. It's decent. I have used the Trimble app Geocache Navigator to find quite a few caches, though I prefer my Oregon 450. I'd say get whatever phone you want--smart or dumb phone. If that happens to be an Android phone, a BlackBerry, or an iPhone... do it. If you can use it for caching, great. If not, find a cheap or used backup GPSr. EDIT: Personal recommendation on if you decide to get a smartphone... go Android. Not sure what carrier you're on or any of that but now days everyone has access to a slew of good Android handsets. If my phone weren't a corporate-provided tool I'd still have an Android phone.
  7. Well, count me in on this bug, too. Been a PM since the last week of March. I've logged in on three or four computers in multiple browsers and logged out once or twice too. *shrug*
  8. I'd love to hunt your series if I'm ever in the area, being a big fan of all things Whedon... but yeah, you have to be careful about cemeteries for a few reasons. The most important, to me, is that people with loved ones buried there may not appreciate the extra foot traffic of a cacher who has no interest in the cemetery. However... I'm the kind of person who reads pretty much every headstone any time I'm in or near a graveyard. It's my way of paying respect. So, if you have permission, it could be kind of cool.
  9. Aww, too bad... I'm going to be in Texarkana on Monday but will be working all day and then driving home. =/ Am hoping to sneak out to the Arkansas side long enough to check another state off on my map, though.
  10. Hey I hope you found someone to hook up with down here. I live north of Ft Worth (Roanoke) and work all over Dallas... However, I'll be busy all of tomorrow and Monday I'm working a case in Texarkana--completely useless to you. Hope you can find some caches! If you have time, there's a nice park area up at Grapevine Lake (behind the Grapevine Mills Mall), so if you're flying in or out of DFW airport that'd be convenient. There's a few good bush caches there and a couple of Wherigo ones that I haven't tried yet.
  11. So what about the meantime? You should never release a technology that interferes with previous technologies until the older tech can catch up. Filters are, apparently, not ready yet. Never mind the fact that this is NOT a case of backward compatibility--it's a case of two very different uses of RF transmissions, one which is essential to many major industries and government groups. If it were simply a matter of "here's a replacement for GPS that's better" it wouldn't be quite as much of an issue.
  12. dfx is right... fragmentation is only a concern when dealing with a spinning platter of some kind, where the heads have to seek to the right sector to find the next bit of data needed. Since flash media has no moving parts, there's no concern. Seek time is not a concern.
  13. +1 to this. Even if you don't find a geocaching one, just message the shop owner and they will quote you a price on making one custom. (My wife sells on Etsy and it's an awesome community.) Congrats on the upcoming nuptials! Good luck with the caching and the marriage!
  14. I have an Oregon 450 and use the standard caribiner to clip it to my pocket, belt loop, or the strap of my pack if it's a hike.
  15. I have eight spare (rechargeables) in my bag as I use the same ones in my Oregon 450 and two flashlights. Sometimes I get a bit overzealous...
  16. Are you getting an "info bar" at the top asking you to authorize said download/upload? I don't have IE9 installed but may install it tonight after work to test this out with my 450 for you. I use Chrome for almost everything and Firefox for anything other than that...
  17. I'm a map fanatic... so I often pull up Google Maps, zoom in on an area (or my hotel, house, etc) and right click and "Drop LatLng Marker." Then I copy the coordinates and paste them into GC.com to find caches. It's all about knowing where you're going on the map--just visually identifying the area works fine thanks to Google Maps.
  18. Another suggestion... see if you can find some local cachers to help walk you through a few finds. I tagged along with an expert cacher for a week (we met at a work training event out of state) and learned quite quickly how to find them on my own. It really helps to learn from someone who knows what they're doing Don't give up--it's well worth the learning curve!
  19. I've heard a few people suggest wearing an orange/green vest, like construction workers wear, when in urban or semi-urban settings... to "blend in." Not sure that would work well. Thoughts? Personally I'm of the belief that people will either look and get over it or look and come talk to me... or look and do something stupid. No matter what they do, I'm doing my own thing. Yes, I try to be very discreet and keep caches hidden from muggles, but ultimately, this is my hobby and none of their business.
  20. I have the latest release of firmware (not beta) on my 450 and I still get this message. However, as someone else has stated, it's a nice reminder--just in case you were walking and forgot to pay attention to your range
  21. I haven't kept up with Palm in a year or two... what about it isn't compatible with Win7? The Palm Desktop sync software? Found this that *might* have some useful info... http://forums.palm.com/t5/Windows-HotSync/Windows-7-and-Vista-hotsync-instructions-here/m-p/251755/message-uid/251755#U251755 Sounds like there is a problem with drivers for the Z22 and Win7--Drivers designed for Vista should work just fine in 7, though. If you can give me more details, I may be able to help more.
  22. I did one similar to this in Arkansas in December. clever. that one was not physically attached to anything, though, which made it easier to spot. I would not have found that one if it weren't for trag_cachers, who was "mentoring" me in the way of Geocaching. Was an awesome find.
