  1. Logged them with an explanation ...thanks!
  2. I recently replaced my 400T. While setting up my new GPSr, I realized I had some field notes on the 400T that I had not uploaded. And some are from 2011! Can I mark these as found now, two years later, or is that a no-no?
  3. >>>>>After I got the first nick in my screen glass I went home and put a scratch protector on it. Nothing like the field to show how it really is.<<<<< Did you get a nick in your Oregon 600 screen? Just curious ... my 400 screen is pretty beat up and I'm hoping the 6xx will withstand me a little better! (It's 5 years old ... so I'm not too surprised .. probably more surprised that it's not more beat up)
  4. OK, so it really does only have 300MB free after the 100K topo is on there. Doesn't seem like a whole lot. Might be worth the extra money and waiting time for the 650T .... I like to put my City Nav maps on the device so I can put in a 24K topo chip of the area we will be hiking. Currently, I can get the lower 48 on my device ... (all of it, of course, on a chip) (I know I could swap the 24K chip and a City Nav chip, but I'm not that great at keeping track of itty bitty things.)
  5. I know there is a screen shot over on the wiki page of the memory on the 600T, but I think it's from a user in Europe. Could someone with a USA 600T tell me how much on-board memory it has and how much is taken up by the topo map (then I know how much space is free). I'm curious to know if it really only has 300MB free on board. Thanks! Susie Kansas
  6. I got an Oregon 400T five years ago. I don't do as much geocaching as I used to, but I do load it up before we take a big trip and I also use it for in-town navigation. We went to Glacier NP last year, and I purchased the 24k topo for Montana ... it was WONDERFUL to have the trail detail. I have MapSource on my computer and have always purchased the DVD version of City Navigator. At first, it was because that was the only way to do routes for my eTrex Legend .. then it was just because I like to see the maps a little bigger. I have not updated my City Navigator in several years (I'm embarrassed to admit it's a 2009 map). On my laptop, I also have nRoute, so I can use the Oregon as a spanner .. this comes in VERY handy when we need to see the big picture of an area we aren't familiar with and get side-tracked with detours. So ... we are going to CO & UT this summer and I stopped by Garmin (it's just down the street) and picked up a 24k for the area and saw the new Oregon 6xx series... (I don't want a Montana ... too big for me and hiking!) I inquired about updating my map and the guy said MapSource is out and BaseCamp is in. I was pretty sure (and I admit, I could be wrong!) that my map is tied to my software and not my device ... so I could put my City Nav map on both my eTrex (when it still worked) and my Oregon 400T ... but the guy says, no, I could not have done that ... the map is tied to the device even if I buy it in DVD form. So, I don't want to update my City Nav map if I'm going to buy a new Oregon 6xx ... but, which one? I don't really need a camera, so I wasn't considering the 650 or 650T ... BUT ... During "normal" operation, I have the original topo (the "T") in the unit memory and the full North America City Navigator on a chip. City Nav is enabled, but I use the topo for impromptu hiking and when we went canoeing. When we went to Glacier, I put the 24k chip in the slot and loaded as much of the North America map as I could into the unit's remaining memory (got all of the lower 48 on) I'm looking at the specs on the new Oregons and the 600T says it only has 300MB available memory. So, I could load maybe half of my City Nav map on it, while keep the original topo on there, and put my 24k topo chip in. ICK 1. Are the maps smaller now? If I purchase City Nav NA, will it go on the Oregon 600T without using a chip? (so I can use the 24k topo in the slot) 2. Should I spring for the 650T to gain the extra space? 3. Am I looking at this all wrong (it has been awhile!)? Sorry for the long post ... Thank you for any insight! Susie Kansas
  7. I have an eTrex Legend (the blue one) and an Oregon. I haven't used the Legend for almost a year, but when I got the Oregon, the Legend was working fine. I thought I'd take my Scouts out a few weeks ago to do some caching and figured the Legend would be handy so I could have two groups. Imagine my surprise when it decided not to work! It comes on, gets a sat lock and then, in a few minutes, the screen goes blank except for a single pixel vertical line. It won't respond to any buttons, so the only way to turn it off is to pull the batteries. I did replace the batteries with fresh ones, so that's not it. Any ideas? I'm not too interested in sending it to Garmin ... jsut not worth it to me, but I would liek to know what the heck happened to it! Thanks! Susie in Kansas
  8. What's the best way for a newbie to calibrate altitude? I used the information I found on Google Earth .... how reliable is that ... is there some place else I can key in my coordinates and get an altitude reading? Do way markers show altitude? I think there is one about 1.5 miles away I could use. Susie in Kansas
  9. I made a list of all the sats it was picking up before 2.95b. I was picking up 01 and 05, though they were not locked on. I had nine others that were green, one that was white and two more that were showing, but not locked in. None had "D"s though I do have WAAS turned on. My accuracy was 16-20 ft. I didn't go out and use the compass, so no comparisons on that. I upgraded to 2.95b and found that I picking up 10 sats that were green and had "D"s! I have never seen "D"s on the bars before! I have one that was green with no "D" and one that was white, but still had a "D". I did notice that they were different sats ... I assume it's because they are WAAS? Although, one is the same ... 31 ... but this time there was a "D". I have seen in some posts mentions about resetting the satellites or some such thing. I did the upgrade and then let the unit sit outside for quite awhile and settle. Is that the same thing? I love the POI subcategories ... the biggest thing I missed from my eTrex Legend! I think I need to recalibrate the altitude, it seems 50' different and unless Kansas has experienced a sudden upheaval that I was unaware of, I think my altitude didn't change!
  10. I have an Oregon 400t and I really want the POI subcategories! Is it safe to upgrade to 2.95b? These was a flurry of posts on several forums about erratic compass readings and screwy track logs at slow speeds, along with problems getting fixes on satellites and then the posts seemed to peter out! So, what's the word? Did the satellite issues go away? How are the compass readings now? Susie in Kansas
  11. Oh, maybe that's it ... when I actually GET to Florida, they'll show up .... hummm What about the truncating of the comments? Any thoughts there ... I'm not as concerned about that ... just curious. I've used Geocaches that seemed to have pages of comments with no trouble ... but these seem to be cut off after two-three lines.
  12. I have an Oregon 400t with a 4GB chip in it. There are five .gpx files on the on the chip along with a 1GB .img file, leaving about 2.75 GB free. On the device itself, there are about 6 .gpx files including one called current.gpx that is about 966kb big (it's the largest). There is about 1 GB free space on the Oregon. I'm using the 2.65 beta software. I use MapSource with City Navigator NA NT 2009. I have a .gdb file that has about 220 waypoints in it. These are the attractions at the Disney World Complex. Each point includes a description of the attraction in the comments section. The attractions are at four parks and also includes our hotel and a few restaurants outside the four main parks. I want the waypoints on the Oregon. First I just loaded on the Oregon, but I found about 3/4 of the waypoints missing ... as are most of the comments on the quarter that are there. Then I tried saving the file as a .gpx and copied it to the Oregon (not the chip) Again, when I go to the waypoint manager, about 3/4 of the points aren't there. When I select a point I do have and show it on the map and then pan to another area .... I can see them on the map, but I don't get a choice to pick them off the Waypoint manager. Any ideas? What am I doing wrong? Susie in KS
  13. How does that compare with AA ... I usually use the fancy energizer kind ....but again, I've never just run it ti run them down.... Thanks! Oh, and go-cashers ... what's the latest, most stable, firmware I should be using? Susie
  14. I'm headed to Disney World next week and I'm taking my Oregon (thanks to everyone who suggested it! I found a multitude of POIs for WDW ... who knew??!). OK, so anyway, when I use my Oregon, we are driving 95% for the time .. I keep it plugged in to the car. When I am actively geocaching, I use AA batteries. I've never really kept track of how long the batteries last ... just when they need replacing, I replace them. I keep a pack in the car for this and cameras and whatever. Since we'll be at the parks for 10-12 hours, I figure I'll need a bunch of batteries if I leave it on all the time (just how fast do those rides go?? and how far did we really walk?). I was wondering if rechargeable batteries last longer on a charge than regular AA. I know I can pop more AAs in the Oregon, I can't recharge batteries while we are at Magic Kingdom. Thoughts? Thanks! Susie in KS
  15. Also, even though your maps don't show Disney details, Disney Points of Interest are available to be loaded. A quick google search turned up these links (I'm sure that there are lots more): http://www.mousesavers.com/gps.html http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/ga...coordinates.asp http://poifriend.com/poigroup.php?poigroup_id=158 Anyway, we head down to WDW a number of times per year and ALWAYS bring the GPSr. Sometimes I go find some caches, sometimes not. Of course, I rent (or borrow) a car while I'm there. WOW ... it never occured to me that this info was on the 'Net somewhere ... dumb, I guess EVERYTHING is on the 'Net somewhere! GPSr is now on the pack list ... after POIs and virtual caches are loaded! Thanks!

  17. In February, my daughter and I are headed to Disney World (FL) from Kansas. I am a sometimes Geocacher and received an Oregon for my 40th birthday. It looks like the only caches on property are virtual ... as I expected ... and there are only about 5. We are flying in and using the shuttle, foregoing the car rental. We are staying on property and it will be a short (4 night) trip ... only travel between the parks and resort and it will be by shuttle bus. I'm trying to travel as light as possible and am thinking I'll leave my Oregon at home. It looks like the map I have (City Nav NA 2008) only shows the roads to WDW and not the details like rides and stuff. My husband thinks I'm crazy not to take it ... Any thoughts? Thanks!
  18. Well, we took our first trip with the Oregon ... my youngest LOVES the Wherigo games! That entertained her for an hour this afternoon! Anyway, I had an eTrex Legend. One thing I miss is the way the POIs are organized. Maybe I"m missing some thing, because the MapSource still does it how i want. For example, if I want to find fast food, on th Legend or in MapSourse, I can select food and the na subcategory of "all", or "American", or "Fast Food" or what ever. Using the Oregon, I just get "Food" I wanted to find the nearest rest stop and tried to find a "Services" category and couldn't. This is my only problem with the Oregon! Susie
  19. WHOA! What is that (well, I can see WHAT it is, it's a USB car adapter)? Where did you get it? Will it charge mp3 players, too? Thanks! Susie
  20. Got it ! Thnaks! OK, one more question ... I have a 4GB microSD card in the Oregon. I was going to load all the maps on to it and use the card to load all my waypoints and routes and stuff, leaving the unit itself as untouched as possible. Using MapSource, I can load the maps on the card, but not any waypoints or routes. Can load all of it on the unit itself. Any reason?
  21. It's here! My brand new Oregon 400T! OK, now what? I also have the MapSource NT DVD maps, which I have installed. I also have a 4GB chip. I have transferred all the US maps to the unit. So what upgrades do I need? The Oregon says "Software version 2.20; Unit ID XXXX; GPS Software Version 2.42" Do I need to up grade the firmware? My MapSource software is version 6.12.4. I know there is an update, but I hear I shouldn't install it. I also understand that with this unit (I had an eTrex Legend before) I can hook it to my laptop and get real time tracking on my laptop using the MapSource software. Is that right? nRoute, maybe? Do I need to do anything to get it using WAAS? I have already set it to use WAAS, but I'm not seeing that it is. What else? Thanks!
  22. So, I turned 40 a few months ago and never could find a "big" present ... husband got a fancy $600 multimeter for his 40th. I checked out the Garmin site a while back and saw the Colorado and LOVED the concept. I called Garmin to ask about the mapping software and what will fit my needs and the guy I talked to said the Colorado is neat, but the Oregon is awesome. Some background: I got an eTrex Legend (the basic kind) four years ago. I discovered geocaching and have done "some" ... mainly when we travel. I use MetroGuide v7. I would love to use a handheld with in-unit routing. I use my Legend about 75% as a road navigator (not the best, I know) and 25% for geocaching. I don't want a nuvi (in-laws have one) because I can't use it as well for geocaching. Normally I navigate and hubby drives ... cuts down on arguing. So, I announced I wanted an Oregon 400t and the CityNavigator NA. THEN I started to wonder if the touch screen would work with gloves and if it would "lock" if the unit was in my pocket. I found this forum and now I'm re-thinking. As far as accuracy ... I know my Legend will sometimes have an accuracy down to 7-8 ft ...now I'm in Kansas, no mountains, no trees. But, 30ft on the Oregon???? Then there's the WAAS stuff and the brightness of the screen .... I'm thinking that it will be such an upgrade for me that most stuff won't matter.... So, should I jump in, considering I'm way amateur compared to you guys? Thanks! Susie in Olathe (yes, THAT Olathe )
  23. I have two daughters and we often geo-cache with another family who also has two kids. When we find a cache, the kids love to sort through all the goodies and choose. I occasionaly find a "gotta have". We always replace one to one, but I'd really like to know the etiquette on this. May we take more than one? We never take more than one TB. Thanks! Susie
