  1. I think it's great that you can find caches w/o a GPS. I'd probably admire someone who could ski without skis too However, please don't hide a cache w/o a GPS - that wouldn't be fair (and possibly unsafe) for those hunting the cache. If you have to hide something that way call it a letterbox and post it on that site. ~erik~

  3. You can't have over sixty seconds! Your coords are probably in a degree and decimal degree format instead of degress, minutes, seconds and decimal seconds. If you divide or multiply by 60 (I forget which) you can convert it. ~erik~

  6. The approval lackey's discussed this and seemed to find more cons than pros. One concern was that the sport would evolve to have different standards in different places. We have found some regional differences that make us wonder about our brethern in other parts of the world. The Brits can't seem to post a cache without focusing on the nearest local pub, which is a challenge with our ban on commercial caches, so we have to be sensitive to their needs. There are benefits to a local understanding - for instance the Dutch know it's ok to bury caches in their dunes, those in much of the Eastern US know they can't even walk on theirs. What we've done to address questions like those above is discuss caches among the approvers before passing judgement on them, or just defering judgement until one of the locals can view it. We do have approvers in Europe, and the eastern and western time zones in the US, so there's pretty good coverage. If the sport continues to grow exponentially I'm sure Jeremy would appreciate offers of help like those posted here. The only limit to more approvers at this time is that the fleet of Lear Jets that shuttle us about are pretty maxed out and the secretarial help keeps leaving early to moonlight for photo shoots, but somehow we cope. Dream on..... erik - geocaching.com adminion

  8. In the spirit of flexibility and accomodation I've made a virtual cache of this: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=30088&Nocache=0.7055475 Your reward for finding it can be a "smiley"! Best wishes, erik - geocaching.com adminion

  10. I just had to shamelessly bump this to the top. We have a good number of people signed up to take part, but the more the merrier! I've been hard at work dreaming up ways to hide caches in ways that sorta stay within the rules, so want to challenge as many as possible. This WON'T be a physically challenging hunt like the Foxhall Geocaching challenge was - anyone can participate and win. ~erik~

  12. I am highly offended by this. I would have thought that the woman should have used her GPS to get across the river, not a map. Cute joke.

  14. I don't think you can, but you can change all it's parameters and it superceedes whatever was there, or, like you noted, just uncheck all days. ~erik~

  16. The last paragraph of the text of this cache of mine is an example of what sparc77 is talking about: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=10433 I'm suspect there are other cases of caches in difficult terrain where the cache hider encourages seekers to let him know in advance when they're going for it. What would be great (in my opinion) is if more did this for safety's sake, and if possibly a page icon could be added when appropriate that would lead to an e-mail link to the "cache buddy". ~erik~
  17. If you can't make it but want to pretend that you did you can order the t-shirt and impress your friends and/or members of the oposite sex. http://www.cafeshops.com/cp/store.aspx?s=GGA2002Event You really should try to make it thought - with hundreds of dollars worth of prizes it'd be silly to just look for normal caches that day! ~erik~ [This message was edited by ~erik~ on July 23, 2002 at 04:35 AM.]

  19. The word "buried" raises all sorts of flags to those who review caches, and cache postings have been declined if caches were buried with a shovel. If there is any doubt the cache owner is asked for an explanation. There was one recently in which the cache owner suggested bringing a shovel as a precaution. When queried it turned out that there was a remote possibility of a car getting stuck in the soft sand of the parking lot - hence the shovel. If a cache is on the beach or in a similar location where "buried" would mean buried in soft sand there is usually no hesitation about posting it - unless the location is a fragile and protected dune environment. Without the name or URL of the cache you've referenced I can't tell you more. Sometimes we're buried (pun intended) with caches to review and errors occur. I'd suggest looking for the cache and if you feel it's inappropriately buried educate the cache owner for his or her benefit, suggest it be relocated if necessary. Thanks! erik - geocaching.com admin lackey

  21. The approvers, simple souls that we are, become confused by caches that are deactivated before they are posted. We assume that they are a work in progress so don't post them, unless as mtn-man noted, there is an explanatory note. Post the note something like: "(Admin - please post this, I will activate it just before our event, don't want it seen earlier)" We'll understand that, remove the added note and post it. Otherwise the cache will just sit there in limbo waiting to be re-activated so it can be posted and starts to interfere with the approval of other caches. We then e-mail the cache owner to ask about it, if there is still no action we have to archive it to get it out of the way. ~erik~

  23. I thought this thread looked familiar, then I saw I'd posted my "solution" a year ago. There are some photos on this link, just don't ask to buy an example as I've sold all I made and don't have time to make more http://pub78.ezboard.com/fgageocachingfrm10.showMessage?topicID=5.topic ~erik~

  25. "Getting the coords done" should just be a matter of taking several readings at the "cache site" with your GPS to ensure that it's accurate, and saving that to enter into the cache submission page. Some GPSR's have averaging functions to automate the process, but unless the spot is very obscure that usually isn't too big a factor with virtual caches. Here are some guidelines to refer to for hidding caches in general, with some specifics pertaining to virtuals: http://www.geocaching.com/articles/requirements.asp ~erik~
