  1. As a Apple user myself I think the previous user isn't so much worried about IF it runs fine under WINE but rather that they would rather it run natively in OS X or Linux. I know that I personally would be completely interested if it ran native on OS X but am not at all interested in running any application at all with WINE. As a developer of a fine software program it is awesome that you compiled it to work with windows. I'm totally sure a lot of windows users will find it of great use. That said C++, Objective C, and a lot of other programing languages allow you to program and compile a software for Windows, Apple and all the flavors of Unix and Linux. If you want to make an Apple user appreciative you'd make it run native. Nothing yerks us more than being told to install WINE or asked to go out and buy windows to install under BootCamp or VirtualBox. That is just my 0.02 cents and has nothing to do with how cool your windows program is.
  2. Wouldn't you rather have a new April Fools joke each year? One that is a surprise rather than one that already played out?
  3. I searched the forums but didn't see an answer so I'll put it out there for you all. Before I knew about the pocket queries I'd use the browser plug-in to manually suck the gpx files onto my gps. I noticed that it also grabbed the images that were in the listing as well. That was pretty cool to have the images in the listing on the gps unit. Then I discovered the PQs and set one up to grab all the geocaches on Oahu. However, the zip file only contains the main gpx file and the attached waypoints gpx file. It'd be nice to get the images too in some way. Does anyone know how? Or is it that you only get the images when using the plug-in to download individual caches, which would be time consuming to get all 760+ on Oahu? That for any help! Additional info: I use an Apple laptop. I have a Magellan GC Plug-in is the Magellan Communicator. Pocket Queries are made here rather than any 3rd party site of software.
  4. Mysterious and rare alien growth circles. Do you need more reasons? That is here on the island of Oahu, Hawaii where I live. It is actually from volcanic activities. But when I'm geocaching my mind wanders. :3
  5. I came across a damp and full log strip today. So I took a new log strip out of my backpack and folded it with the old one. I'm not about to take someone else's logbook or log strips ever. Then I placed it in a new small ziploc as the original ziploc was ripped. I imaging that explains the dampness. To me that is proper edict, to repair if you are able. Though I'm very new to the sport. Granted everyone might not have the right size spare log book or sheet. If you don't then don't sweet it, just leave a "needs maintenance" note. I'd just personally like to see caches live on, even if the CO might be a little or a lot AWOL. After all we want the caches to live on for others as they have lived on up until we found them. :3
  6. Magellan refuses to make: * Mac Firmware updater for eXplorist GC * Mac NMEA drivers eXplorist GC * Mac version of Vantage Point Magellan did make: * Mac version of the Magellan Communicator browser plugin I emailed Magellan support three times trying to get any info about how to do things as a Mac user and their best response? "... you may visit a public library and do it. " How sad is that since public library computers are locked down and don't allow you to just run your own software. They then flippantly says they may, if you are lucky, consider supporting the make with future products... Of course these are products you have to buy to replace you unsupported product. Though as of yet there are no fully mac compatible Magellan products. So even though I have a Magellan eXplorist GC I'd suggest NOT buying any Magellan product. I doubt I'll ever buy another Magellan product.
  7. Agreed! I've set up a PQ that will grab every cache on the island of Oahu, Hawaii -- where I live. It is a real life saver.
  8. I have to agree. Wil Wheaton is the key to making any geocache famous. It really is as simple as that.
  9. Also you can sort your area by "Placed" date to find the newest OR sort by "Found" to see the ones that have never been found. However, there are hordes of people that make it their mission in life to have the most FTF finds. This means that you just need to stay positive and be fast. If you are not the first to find one cache, 20 caches or even 100 -- don't get upset or down. It is a fun and competitive game and you too will have your day. :3
  10. Since geocaching is international just which "english" do you feel it must be edited to? British English, Canadian English, American English, Australian English... etc etc. If we pick American English will we use west coast, east coast, southern or hawaiian local phrases, and colorful expressions? If the person says bonnet because they live in the UK will you make it say hood? Then there is the fact that some people who write their cache pages don't even speak any form of english. Do we now force them to learn your favorite version of english in order to post? Do all the monitors and kind people approving the caches need think in the mind set of a single language. I don't know. I personally don't think we should be so controlling towards others. I think if we wish to understand we should make and effort to understand. If we want others to understand us we should make an effort to be understood better by others. Sorry, I just get riled-up with the need for sameness. :3
  11. I got some wood circle blanks at my local craft store and used a rubber stamp to carefully imprint each one. Then used a fine point pen on the other side to write my name. I'm still thinking about if I want to varnish them or not.
  12. It will be my sig item now. I made a batch of them tonight. So I'll be dropping them in the caches going forward. :3
  13. I decided to make my own geocoin. It is more like a wooden nickel, really. It isn't trackable, of course, just something to leave in geocaches I visit. :3
  14. One of those infrared hunting motion capture cameras would have been dead useful. That is, unless that person also finds it fun to vandalize hunters stuff too.
  15. I try to leave plenty of swag too, even though I seldom take anything. Living near Honolulu I try to leave a mix of swag for kids and tourists that might be geocaching. :3
  16. I've only been Geocaching for two weeks so I'm too new to have taken part in the 10/10/10 event. So I was wondering if there might be a 11/11/11 event this year to look forward too. :3
  17. Once I overheard this snippet of mother-in-law wisdom "If you have a good haircut old ladies will want to give you their money." I think vendors just sending you a free coin because you begged them is just as unlikely. However, get a good hair cut and beg for TWO coins; then you can share your wealth with me.
  18. What you can do on vacation is some Waymarking of all the cool places you stay, visit, eat at! Don't forget to take pictures of the place and the signs etc.
  19. I really like all caches from nano to big. I guess when it comes to nano caches for me what is important isn't really how hard it is to find, but rather how clever the location or the cache in that location is. Also like all caches I like to see all the other people that have been to that spot. I'm not the type to think "oh, there can't be swag in there so I'll go to this ammo can one instead."
  20. After three messages to Magellan and three "we value you" non-help replies I simply give up on Magellan. I'll use the gps, but when it breaks or is time to upgrade I most certainly will never be buying from them again. I'm sorry you are getting buggyness.
  21. What about offering GPS rentals for people visiting your island. And as other people have mentioned you can try to recruit other locals into the sport. Possibly create a one day class you can offer a couple times a years and try to get the young people into it. :3 I live on the island of Oahu and we only have about 760ish geocaches. While I'm new and have only found 13 of those, I'm still in the same boat and think about it too.
  22. I really enjoyed the movie too. :3 Let's all go Cashewing!
  23. The very first time I heard of geocaching was only a week ago. I was a little bored and decided to use Bing to look up "gps" as someone I know just got a Garmin gps watch for running. However my search came up with geocache results. Confused I hit up youtube and saw the Geocaching intro video and the Splinterheads geocaching explanation. That night I rushed out and got a gps as it reminded me of my childhood. Back in the early 80s in summer camp at Camp Norris I had climbed Mt. San Gorgonio and was amazed to find a summit cache with log book and a benchmarker. Geocaching is letting me relive that thrill.
  24. What if you go in to Disk Utility and have it repair permissions. Maybe one folder has a wrong permission for either the installer or the plug-in. Then give reinstalling a try after that. I know it is a long shot, but hey.
