  1. The property is posted as private property - but there is no signage forbidding trespass. If it becomes a posted cache, the description would include that information so that seekers would not have reason to be disturbed by the Private Property signs.

If the cache is a private, invitation only cache, the invitation would, of course, imply permission.

    as to the "no smilie"

I am not sure of this, of course, but I suspect that there are a number of folks out there who are more interested in the hunt than in the trophy

  2. part of the beauty of this potential cache site is that it is nowhere near a road- it will require a hike of at least an hour just to get to the area

I already permit hunters (who ask for that permission) to use the property - so of course the cache would not be available for hunting during hunting seasons. (though the number of hunters out there is pretty limited since a 1hr+ hike appeals only to serious folk)

The area is unimproved mountain woodlands, so the fact that strangers might come poking around is of absolutely no consequence

  3. Given that some rules for placing caches exist to minimize impact, I wonder:

If the cache is placed on private property owned by the cacher, should such rules be enforced? (are they?)

I am planning to place a cache that would be buried at a shallow depth. I don't want to go into greater detail as it would give too much away.

The answer to this question will determine whether the cache is a private "invite only" cache or listed for general consumption.

  4. "Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

    "Both very busy, sir."

  5. Well, a friend and I did the first two stages of Bill and Gary's this morning, then, cuz we were already in the park, decided to do Metroparks: Moo'd Over before going on to Stony Creek. Moo'd Over ended up taking the rest of the day - we had a very hard time figuring it out - which I guess is relatively common. Anyway, we will go to Stony to continue Bill & Gary's before we get the Metroparks cache there. Hopefully we won't waste a while day combing through forest floor debris next time.

Thanks very much for the lead.

As to downriver caches, I will get to a few of them, I am sure - but it is a long trek for me to get down there. Perhaps I will combine that with a Mudhens game some weekend.

  6. I heard the NPR story, and also read the Kentucky Living article, but did nothing about it until a brewing buddy called me up and told me he had a new hobby ...

... hey, I've already told this story. Sorry

(edited to remove silly smiley face)

  7. well, if it's on cable, I'll have to find someone who will record it for me.

you aren't the only anti-cable, etc. fella out there, and I am certainly glad to find out that I am not the only one, either!

Still, it might be fun to go to the trouble of seeing the pasty-faced, lardbottom, afraid of anything that crawls troglodyte woman slogging through the healthy forest...

....come to think of it, I believe that this would be a great disservice to the natural denizens, both animal and vegetable, of the ecosystem. Make her stay at home!

  8. Actually, I do not want to change the unit. I want to change MapCreate to match the information I am getting.

No worry, I finally found it.

As generally happens, once I asked for help, the answer popped up and slapped me in the face.

    Thanks for your patience

  9. I am a rank new bee, just got my GPSr yesterday...

Okay, I found a couple of caches this afternoon (thanks Windy Afternoon!), but now I have a vaguely technical question that I hope some kind soul can assist with:

I am using a Lowrance iFinder H2O and MapCreate USA. My problem is that the way MapCreate is set up out of the box, it wants degrees, minutes and seconds of lat and long when setting a waypoint by coordinates - but the coordinates as given on the Geocaching.com website are in degrees and minutes (plus decimal fractions). Does anyone know how to set MapCreate to accept the degree/minute/decimal fraction format? It is a real pain in the bottom doing the math as a separate chore, espcially knowing that there must be a much simpler way.

    answers, please
