Thanks, it does help.. I am sold on the Lowrance menu setup - it has a steep learning curve but I doubt that this unit is a great deal different than my old H2O so I expect to be up to speed on it in a matter of minutes.
-
well darn - I perked up for a moment there only to have you drop the other shoe and totally disabuse me of any notion of going after that one

I just posted this as a reply to a different post, but considering that the post already has about 50 replies, my question may not be read or responded to. Please bear with me if you read this twice.
I had the H2O until yesterday morning when I was the victim of a smash and grab. I am wondering if the remote antenna on my roof was a giveaway for the gps unit tucked away in the center console. Now I am considering upgrading but I will stick with Lowrance - I love the unit for its speed, accuracy and the fact that I have developed a familiarity with those confusing menus. Also, I still have the MapCreate software I bought with the H2O so I can avoid an additional expense by buying a compatible outfit. I am looking at the Expedition C - so if anyone has comments about that model, I would really appreciate some feedback.
notes: I have very little interest in the MP3 player - I enjoy the sounds of nature and would not likely listen to music while caching and I have a fine cd player in the car, so that feature is really a useless bell or whistle as far as I am concerned, but the barometric altimeter and the electronic compass seem like potentially useful features.
Carry On

I have a collapsible trek stick - it is great for poking into places you are not sure of, too - I'd much rather have a snakebite or brown recluse bite on the stick than on my precious fingers

depends
no, I don't carry them
it depends what sort of cache I am seeking.
mostly my camera bag with some swag in an outside pocket and a bottle of water hanging off a 'biner on my belt. In the bag, of course, are cameras and any gadgets I think I may want/
For a serious cache - backpack with tent, sleeping bag, lots of clean, dry socks, 2 or 3 week supply of desacrated foodstuffs, water, more water, raingear and a wool sweater. (this is a partial list)
-
well, I wouldn't expect any cattle to go for it, but otherwise... what's the problem?
(p.s. - there are no A's buried in cemeteries)
-
I wouldn't hunt it - because I don't enjoy micros/nanos - but if you wanna do it, go ahead - be sure you tell folks it is VERY challenging and then make it as hard as you like.
-
The simple solution - and one required by guidelines published by some states' park administrators - is to use a transparent container. Then a person finding it can see quickly and easily what it is.
(edited to correct sloppy typing)

wouldnt it be up to the person who places it? Personaly if I dedicated a cache to a certain person, I would give that person the lat/lon before I even submit it to be reviewed.
if you want a particular person to be ftf, it seems to me that is the only way - and ignore any whiners who think that is 'unfair' in their version of the game.
(edited to repair misspelling)

I generally seek a cache wearing t-shirt, shorts and tech sandals. I admit that this does result in some scrapes & cuts on my legs, but that beats the hell out of sweating to death in 90°F + weather. In my experience, shins heal - but heat frustration* takes its toll.
*(no, that is not a misspelling)
-
I read 'em if I have trouble finding the cache. I typically print out the first two pages of the pdf - so I usually have 5 or so. I don't count on them to be accurate - what one person reports as a mislocated waypoint may be the result of bad weather, foliage or poor eyesight.
-
Everyone is playing a different game. I tend to seek hides that require some hiking - a walk in the woods at the very least. I happily ignore micros, but I enjoy a good puzzle. When I hide, I don't try to make something that will attract the most people - but something that will provide some pleasure to those who seek them.
Bottom line - hide your caches so that they are the kind of things you would enjoy looking for and ignore the sad whinings of anyone who is not prepared for the challenge.

My Profile has strained the character limits allowed for the page . . .
My profile page has only one character on it - after all, there isn't room on any page for more than one character like me

Before west nile, we used to have mobs of crows over the house 2 or 3 times a year. The white spots disappear after a couple rains. It may seem perverse, but I miss them (the crows, not the spots).

I enjoy hiding puzzles - if folks don't like 'em, they don't have to do them - same as I don't bother with micros. There are plenty of caches in every flavor for everyone. That said, I won't tell the coordinates but I will give many hints depending on whether folks ask for them or demand them. Demanders don't get much. As far as someone 'cheating' - that's ok with me - they know if they solved the puzzle or not - and they can't get nearly the feeling of accomplishment if they just got the coords somewhere, so they are not cheating me out of anything and I don't bother with policing the logs. Everyone plays a different game.

sorry...not much edication.
It's 'eddication' not 'edication'

Cow parsnip grows in Ohio, too - it is not limited in scope to Alaska.
I have NEVER had any reaction to any of that family of plants - and have waded through my share of fields full of them - so if you don't mind, I will ignore your friendly warning.
Carry on.

uh-oh! nobody has taught this poster the secret hand signal - somebody needs to upbraid the new member training department!

Dunno what problem you had with this reviewer - but I have to say that with the caches I have placed, the review process has been a dialog - that is information requested and transmitted. After two experiences with a reviewer, it seems a little harsh to dadgum them all out of hand.
(note: where it says "dadgum" up there, I used a different word that I would not have thought objectionable - it is a homophone of "dam")

I'll give 'em a shout

You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose.
But you can't pick your friend's nose!
sure you can - I wouldn't, but you can

My ex-wife gives me alot of free aggravation!
sure - but you paid for that up front

color me embarrassed!
I just checked the site again and had the same problem - then I realized that I am running software which prevents scripts from running until I ok them for a site. Once I did that, the site worked great!
(should I say Success!?)
I apologize profusely for casting any aspersions - and I fully intend to implement this check on all of my puzzle caches.
thanks, Goldenhawk!

I'm looking for a dynamic antenna and a pc cable compatible with the Lowrance iFinder line - specifically the Expedition C, though I think the specs are the same as for the h2o, hunt, phd, etc.
If you have these items taking up extra room in your gadget bag and would consider making a deal, drop me an email or contact me on icq -- contact info on my profile
