  1. I suspect that it is because unlike these, icon_smile.gif,you don't get any points for one of these, icon_sad.gif. If you got a point for each of your DNF logs then I suspect you would find more geocachers not finding caches.

you get points for  these? wow! what can you do with them? redeem them for fabulous prizes?

  2. very unlikely to be africanized bees in your neck of the woods - but dude, you surely can tell the difference between the honey bee and the yellow jacket!?

regarding the comment that you might have depleted the number of bees in the vicinity, killing a few hundred bees would barely dent the population of a beehive. I don't think yellowjacket hives typically have populations numbering in the tens of thousands as beehives do, but even so, where conditions are right for one colony, there may be more.

  3. cool! My brand new Expidition c does the speedo thing, too - and the detail info on the satellite page.

Has anyone here tried using the National Geographic back roads exploder software? they claim it is compatible with Lowrance (as well as with Garmin, Magellan and Eagle)

  4. Make it at home - all you need is a tiny catheter for your cat - you can strap the collection bag to its waist (inasmuch as cats have waists) and collect as much uv-reactive ink as you wish. You should mind the smell, however, it may be a dead giveaway for those who have not thought to bring a blacklight flashlight.

  5. Because light-reflective objects usually work by reflecting the light back through small clear spheres, I believe that immersing them in water will make the spheres optically flat and therefore render the reflective quality null and void. You may wish to experiment before you put much more effort into a design which may well prove unworkable.

  6. I'm a relatively new geocacher, but I've done enough reading of log files and forum posts to see that good manners are a large part of what makes this sport fun.

After some thoughtful searching, I set up my own cache and it was approved yesterday. Within two hours someone posted a DNF with several complaints and a statement that they didn't enjoy the site.

Since then, two other people have found it with relative ease and no complaints.

I don't want to be a whiner, but I'm disappointed that the first log note on my first cache is so disparaging. The only DNF I've posted was after returning to the site several times and searching thoroughly with a couple of other people. To post one quickly suggests lack of searching effort rather than a bad hide.

Would anyone care to give their opinion?

I have had comments like that, followed by positive ones. I have never seen fit to edit or delete a log - the finder (or nonfinder as the case may be) is within rights to write their opinion, after all. In some cases these comments have moved me to clarify a passage on the cache page or add a note. Maybe I am thick-skinned, but even "bad" criticism can be edifying.

(edited to add comments I should have added when I originally posted)

  7. I like to challenge the ordinary. Look into a Lowrance before you make your mind over. Take a look at the Expedition C, it's cheaper and just a good. You can get a full package with accessories and mapping for less than the base unit price of a 60CSx.

I just got an Expedition C to replace a stolen unit and am extremely happy with it - it has a boatload of features and an excellent color screen. Pop for the topo maps and you have a great unit at a very reasonable price.

  8. Around here (Corner of GA, SC, NC) signature items are considered trade items. Signature items are about the only thing I will take in trade. Now some people like me will leave a signature item and take nothing, they consider that a trade up for the geocache. I tend to do this when there isn't a signature item in the geocache.

I do trade sometimes but I have taken to leaving a sig item as well - the intention is for the sig item to be another item for trade in the cache. I figure trading up (by providing extra loot) can only improve the sport (game, pasttime, or whatever other descriptive nominative you prefer).
