  1. I've moved along a couple that had been on different continents - both were simply placed in a cache in the owner's neighborhood and did their travelling in the ordinary way.
  2. I like to see finds on my caches - and there are not a lot of puzzle solvers in my neck of the woods, so I always provide a clue when asked directly. The clue is usually more along the line of helping the person solve the puzzle and I try not to make it too easy - which would destroy the accomplishment of solving the puzzle.
  3. I figure 3 in a row is more than bad luck, regardless - so I will check. Most of the dnf's on mine are due to incorrect solution to a puzzle, but I still check. To sift those out, I have started using a coordinate checker (geochecker.com) on all puzzle caches so that solvers can check before leaving the house.
  4. you get points for these? wow! what can you do with them? redeem them for fabulous prizes?
  5. very unlikely to be africanized bees in your neck of the woods - but dude, you surely can tell the difference between the honey bee and the yellow jacket!? regarding the comment that you might have depleted the number of bees in the vicinity, killing a few hundred bees would barely dent the population of a beehive. I don't think yellowjacket hives typically have populations numbering in the tens of thousands as beehives do, but even so, where conditions are right for one colony, there may be more.
  6. I have no problem with logging a dnf - I always do it
  7. cool! My brand new Expidition c does the speedo thing, too - and the detail info on the satellite page. Has anyone here tried using the National Geographic back roads exploder software? they claim it is compatible with Lowrance (as well as with Garmin, Magellan and Eagle)
  8. Make it at home - all you need is a tiny catheter for your cat - you can strap the collection bag to its waist (inasmuch as cats have waists) and collect as much uv-reactive ink as you wish. You should mind the smell, however, it may be a dead giveaway for those who have not thought to bring a blacklight flashlight.
  9. Because light-reflective objects usually work by reflecting the light back through small clear spheres, I believe that immersing them in water will make the spheres optically flat and therefore render the reflective quality null and void. You may wish to experiment before you put much more effort into a design which may well prove unworkable.
  10. check here: http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/index.php
  11. yeah, something else we can wallow in
  12. Where I live, my puzzle caches go for months without a find. Seems folks around here don't appreciate a puzzle much. Even the very easy one I placed in a library has only two log entries - and only one of them is in the online log. I know it's hard to wait for that first find, but it is worth it. Patience.
  13. I just followed the link - now there is not even a default page - you may, if you feel so inclined, peruse their other files at your leisure, however.
  14. lots of links to parts here: http://amasci.com/supliers.html
  15. easiest is dd° mm.mmm' that is, degrees and minutes carried to thousandths
  16. I agree with both of you. That's just not write. You're both wright. rite. you ain't wrung
  17. I have had comments like that, followed by positive ones. I have never seen fit to edit or delete a log - the finder (or nonfinder as the case may be) is within rights to write their opinion, after all. In some cases these comments have moved me to clarify a passage on the cache page or add a note. Maybe I am thick-skinned, but even "bad" criticism can be edifying. (edited to add comments I should have added when I originally posted)
  18. I just got an Expedition C to replace a stolen unit and am extremely happy with it - it has a boatload of features and an excellent color screen. Pop for the topo maps and you have a great unit at a very reasonable price.
  19. I can appreciate your problem - I use only one pole, but I am also juggling camera and water bottle. There are times an extra pair of hands would be convenient. The hands-free solution discussed here seems like an elegant solution.
  20. I do trade sometimes but I have taken to leaving a sig item as well - the intention is for the sig item to be another item for trade in the cache. I figure trading up (by providing extra loot) can only improve the sport (game, pasttime, or whatever other descriptive nominative you prefer).
  21. there are plenty of conversion scripts online - but the easiest way to deal with it is to set up your GPSr to read out the format you prefer to use.
  22. Lockers in places like train stations typically get cleaned out on a regular basis - sometimes as frequently as every night, so if you want to go for that, make sure you know for certain that it isn't gonna get flushed clean.
  23. I just lost one to a thief - frankly it was just another bad day. I have already ordered a replacement. I seriously doubt that the perp will return it just because it has my home coordinates marked.
  24. tnx! I ordered one today from GPSdude who had the lowest price I could find online (about $260)
