  1. Would that include mosquito bites (and their 3 million deaths per year)? I believe you missed my point. I was merely suggesting that there is a greater number of people that are attacked by wild animals than there are killed by a few certain species. And that is why I (along with quite a few others) carry while caching/hiking. And you might have missed my point. If you want to legally carry a gun to protect yourself against wild animals, then do so. But if one wants to live a long and healthy life, then there are many, many more effective things one might do. Eat better, get more exercise, get regular health check-ups, don't smoke, own a pet, drive more carefully in a safer vehicle, sleep the right number of hours, laugh more, have a healthy sex life, take precautions against vector-borne diseases, etc., etc., etc. Which is what I said when I stated, "If you want to legally carry a gun to protect yourself against wild animals, then do so." My point is that if you're carrying a gun to protect yourself against wild animals because you want to live a long and healthy life, then it might be wise to also consider the many, many more effective ways of accomplishing this goal. I can and have protected myself against wild animals. I just don't need a gun to do it. Learning about the animals and their behaviors is a good place to start. Timothy Treadwell knew more perhaps than anyone in the world about Brown Bears. He was just like you, he didn't need a gun. TOUCHE' !!!
  2. I'm planning on hiding my first cache and I was wondering if I should list it as a premium member only cache? I'm thinking that while it may have less visitors in may have less chance of being trashed and may be appreciated more. What are the reasons to list a cache as a PMOC and not a "regular" cache?
  3. I'd be curious to know how many people you'd estimate have been killed by wolves in the wild during the past 100 years. So would I(curious about how many). Recently a pack of wolves within 25 miles of my house had become quite aggressive to humans, routinely stalking them. They also killed several dogs. Instead of waiting for an attack to occur, the DNR got rid of the wolves. I don't know if this means wolves were getting ready to attack humans.. frankly, it seems unlikely. You never know. Certainly the odds for getting attacked by wild animals or mugged in the city are very small, but why not be prepared? I wonder if Catydid belittles people who buy fire extinguishers hehehe. There are several species of predators in my area. There's even this nasty creature called a fisher(a big weasel). I know a person who had their dog killed, and in turn was attacked by the nasty bugger. Weird. I have four 5 year olds and one dog. I think it's prudent for me to be equipped to defend them. I'm not being macho, I've never shown my gun to anyone when I've carried and it's not something I mention. I'm not saying everyone should carry a gun, I respect the right to go unarmed and I don't judge those who choose to do so. I just don't get why anti's are so critical of those who choose to be able to defend themselves. Us Geocachers frequently go to areas we are unfamiliar with, I cannot see how it is unwise to be prepared to defend oneself. 1.3 million violent crimes a year... and those are the reported ones. Here's something interesting about where I live: "Wolf attacks on domestic livestock and pets hit record levels in Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2010,..." no attacks on people recorded though. Happy caching. Wolf attacks are VERY rare but have happened. Discovery Channel has had several programs about documented wolf attacks in North America. You really hit the nail on the head when you said "Us geocachers frequently go to areas we are unfamiliar with". That is the aspect of geocaching that is the most foreign to me. My wife loves that I have started geocaching with our little girl because the whole family is getting out more and exploring our community and the surrounding states.
  4. Most times when I put my handgun in my pack is when I am doing rual and city caches. I carry it on my person for the city caches but when I get to the wood I don't want to leave it in my truck so alot of times it goes in my pack. I know this wouldn't be idea if I had to present it in a hurry and that is why I'm thinking of buying one of these. Maxpedition It carrys to your side and not your back. I'm thinking that this may be an idea caching bag for rual and urban environments.
  5. Count me in. I have a couple of favorite caches that are very bleak when it comes to swag so I will go and restock at least one of them.
  6. Excellent, rational post, thank you sir.
  7. I hear ya man. Caching has taken me to lonely and desolate places both urban and rual where if something went wrong help(LE) is along way off especialy in counrty like AZ.
  8. Open carry. I use an in the waistband concealed holster for a S&W SD9, and a friend of mine uses a paddle style "over the belt" holster for a Glock 23. No matter what, though, there's some degree of printing, unless you hide the thing in your underwear. I wouldn't worry about printing so much, and if somebody sees it, then you have a teachable moment. Oh, and a 92FS is drool-worthy. You can't go wrong with 9x19mm parabellum. Is it a serious piece of hardware? I dunno, if I saw somebody print with a DE Mark XIX... that's some serious hardware, effective against BEARS. Which, by the way, a good reason to carry is when you're in places where you don't want large, toothy mammals to turn you into geo-hors d'oeuvres. I have also felt very uncomfortable before in urban environs where I didn't attempt to find the cache and left the area altogether.
  9. I usually carry my firearm in a Blackhawk fannypack that doesn't print at all and alot of times I just have my firearm in my pack. My firearm printing isn't that big of an issue. I have talked with LEOs while open carrying and they didn't notice or just didn't care.
  10. I have a -flashlight -gloves -ink pen -Glock G26 -hand sanitizer -swag -extra mag for Glock G26 -cache repair supplies -personal survival kit -water -safety glasses -gps -compass -cell phone
  11. Nope. Its the geocaching forum. Would you like to discuss geocaching? Are you behaving in this manner in the thread about Geocaching with dogs?
  12. Why are you intentionally trying to derail this thread? It seems from your posts that you don't like this particular subject. Why not just ignore the thread then? Otherwise, I think it has been a rather civilized discussion. I don't carry a concealed weapon. I do carry an openly sheathed machete. I don't have any problem with someone carrying a gun though. As I've said a couple of times now... this is a geocaching forum, not a gun forum. Go to a gun forum if you want to talk about guns. If you don't like it stop clicking on the thread. Thank you. I will click on whatever thread I want to click on, and I will respond with my opinion until a moderator asks me to stop, thank you. If you don't like what I write, stop reading it. I don't want to get your underwear in a bunch. How old are you? Not sure what you are getting at with that question. Are you suggesting that I am immature because my opinion is different than yours? Or are you suggesting that I'm an old geezer stubbornly stuck in my outdated opinions? Do you intend to question my IQ next? Here are a couple of alternate places to carry on your CCW discussion: Concealed Carry Forum DefensiveCarry USA Carry Ohioans for Concealed Carry California Concealed Weapon Florida Concealed Carry Forums That was just the first page that Google presented. Not one of the hits pointed to a geocaching forum. You know this is really too easy...AND FUN! Oh... hey!! Wait a second. I thought you were here to discuss geocaching, and this was only a little sideline to your geocaching discussions. But... (hold the presses...) you haven't DONE any geocaching, have you? At least not under the account that you are posting with. Man! Is this the Salem Witch Trials or what!

Why would you purposely go out and do something for FUN that you don't like to do? Because I get my fun in strange ways. Now can we discuss geocaching related topics or are we still stuck on guns? Jholly, I looked at your profile pic and you look like a really nice guy, why does it bother you so much that someone is discussing the carrying of firearms while GEOCACHING? I wonder how many thread topics that you scan over all the time because they don't interest you and you choose not to join in the discussion? Why this thread? It appears that there are people on this fourm site that are trying to bully others into not discussing subjects that they disagree with. Is that fair? Is it right? Do you OWN this site? Please guys, I understand if you don't like the topic of this thread but why don't you just look for another thread to join into instead of trying to stop others from discussing what they choose to?

  18. I carry a Walther PPK .380 in a inside the pants holster and a Springfield XD .45 in my cache bag with extra magazines. I have been using a Blackhawk fannypack to carry my Glock G26, one extra magazine, Surefire Executive Defender flashlight, and folding knife. But lately I have been putting the fannypack in my backpack when not in rual areas. I have been thinking about buying a Maxpadition pack that has a pocket for handguns and the pack is carried at your side instead of your back so that you can get to the weapon while wearing the pack.
  19. I carry a Walther PPK .380 in a inside the pants holster and a Springfield XD .45 in my cache bag with extra magazines. The extra magazines in your caching bag are for what? What on earth are you preparing for? Do you really want to know, Chad, or are you just trolling? I'll assume you really want to know. Ammunition magazines are a common design weakness in semi-automatic handguns. Carring an extra magazine is more than having extra ammunition, it's also about having an extra part that fails. It's like having a spare tire for your car.
  20. I carry a Walther PPK .380 in a inside the pants holster and a Springfield XD .45 in my cache bag with extra magazines. The extra magazines in your caching bag are for what? What on earth are you preparing for? wants to make sure he gets the FTF LOL
  21. For everyone that is getting their underwear in a bunch over this topic........DON'T CLICK ON THE THREAD!
  22. Chanceencounter is apparently not an old timer and he owns no caches. Sure you have the name right? It's Chance Encounter. My mistake. He stopped logging on in 2007 I think.
  23. I'm new to caching and I have been wondering how common it is for cachers to carry concealed weapons while caching, the ones that have a carry permit in their local of course. Am I alone out here?
  24. I'm looking for a protective case for this unit. I need a hard shell case and I soft shell case. The hard shell for storage and the soft shell to attach to my pack straps for the times when I need both hands free on the trail. What works for you guys? EDIT TITLE? I meant 60CSx
  25. Hay Old Timers! it's great I ran across this thread because I was about to post a thread tring to find out about what happened to a old time member that has gone now and how I might get in touch with him now.
