  1. I know, every time I see the topic title in the list my hackles rise a bit. "What do you mean - what am I wearing?!?" Then I laugh and tell myself that they're just talking about caching, it's ok. I think. :-) i wear a hideously-coloured tropical shirt (see other thread about what old folks in caching) and jeans.
  2. absolutely awesome! i hope you two are writing down your adventures from WWII and later to pass on your personal view of history. i have interviewed a lot of vets and they think their stories are not important. i can assure you they are. as members of the Greatest Generation walk on, we need the memories
  3. i beg your pardon? you obviously have no connection to the real world dude. what a skewed, warped, dumb paradigm as to what "someone that age" is like. what the heck is "that age" anyway? surely you were writing in jest. i mean no one could be that clueless, right? for example, i am still an active newspaper photographer, shooting sports, events and accidents. i climb under fences, go up hills to cover an airplane crash, work the sides of a football field and shoot baseball out of the dugout. i go camping alone, wander around the desert, 4-wheel on rocky roads in the middle of nowhere. i am sure i am "that age" in your book. and i am female. not that that has anything to do with it except to maybe clear up your idea of what us old folks are like. and i happen to love my hideous tropical shirts. they are comfortable in the heat and don't bind if i am trying to get into a strange position to shoot. sheesh.
  4. i was dinking around with my forum signature the other day trying to change the quote and managed to not only lose the quote but also the link to my cointracking account. i made the change, logged out, logged back in but still no joy. once before someone here told me how to fix it. can one of you kind folks please help!?
  5. after years of selling and giving away this is what my collection looks like now. small but well-loved. i figured it was time to take them out of the box and put them up where i could enjoy them everyday. i should line them up better, the johnnie lacy is supposed to be in the middle.
  6. i am trying to get rid of the post above with the photo of the loridarlin' coin. all i can do is edit and the photo isn't going away. suggestions? or can a mod delete please.
  7. duh, it's a really tiny "yomp" - you know, a YOMP!
  8. of course there is always the concept of those who don't want to see spoilers won't look at the photos. that seems pretty simple.
  9. i've always thought that a beautiful coin.
  10. caching naked is not recommended. epecially in the desert.
  11. not really. the only ethical choice is if you want to put swag in or not. level of maintenance is not. it is expected you maintain the cache well and not let it go down hill because that is the way you want to play the game. it is so very simple. place a cache, maintain it on a regular basis, keep it clean — how hard can that be?
  12. totally understand. i have cleaned out more than one of that kind of cache. i put on note in the online log that basically said the cache had a poor container, contents were wet and the container needed to be changed out to remedy the situation or remove the cache. a duct taped coffee can is a poor choice. first, duct tape doesn't seal a container and the metal cap rusted to almost the point of not being able to get the lid off. bluntness was not appreciated. CO was pissed off. another reason to stop geocaching except for extraordinary caches. but gosh, in the old days i went to some good ones. with cool sig items!
  13. if i remember correctly, the early guidelines were do not place a cache that was too far away to maintain regularly. do not place caches on vacation where you can't get to back easily to maintain it. it was suggested like 50 miles or something. today's guidelines simply say "Once you place the cache, it is your responsibility to maintain the cache and the area around it. You will need to return as often as you can to ensure that your cache is not impacting the area negatively, and to check that the container is in good shape." it doesn't say place a cache and walk away leaving it for others to take care of. how is one to know that your cache is one for whom it was hidden? and like it or not, swag was the original intent of geocaching. sure that has assumed less importance, but to say all caches should be swag-less is silly and basically arrogant. so yes, it is your responsibility to maintain your cache regularly. and if that involves a long drive and hike, well, you hid the cache in that location. have respect for the cache and location to make sure all is ok condition. you don't like swag. then put a big note in the cache description "NO SWAG ALLOWED!" make it a nano and all will be well.
  14. tennesse jed, ray & rose — old personal and loridarlin'. lots of fun!
  15. way too many words, too big of a block of text - he needs an editor.
  16. Thanks. We only made 100 of them back in, um.......2006. I think other than the three in my case, I have 2 left awaiting to be dropped in some awe-inspiring location yet TBD. i think the mojave desert would be a good place, in a cache yet to be placed....but we could arrange one.
  17. so if i am a geocacher in the middle of the desert with only the creosote around and i want to place a cache, i am to look for a hole that i can fit a cache in that is hidden from sight and not move any rocks to obscure the hole? hoping i am not blocking a tortoise burrow or snake hole. or if i am in a local woodland, dead log laying there amongst a bunch of other dead logs, i can't block the entrance to the hole in the log to obscure the fact that a cache is in there? no dead grass moved? no sticks and stones? these are example of caches i have found. hiding a cache by adding rocks to its hiding place must have been done by an inexperienced cacher? are you serious? where do you hide your caches? or do you leave them sitting out in the open. for those of us that do not live where there are naturally occurring holes and bushes in which to hide caches, moving a few rocks around is the only option. i am more concerned with the CO that pounded sections of pvc pipe into the ground and dropped little tubes with lids in them and called them caches. if you want to be picky, the whole premise of geocaching is harmful to the environment.
  18. Amen to that. Power trails are just litter that clutter up PQ's. They are only for numbers, strewn along highways and bike trails and have nothing to do with "real" geocaching. As they are becoming more prevalent around here I wish there was a power trail attribute so I could filter them out. They are cluttering my PQs too. plus they can block a better location.
