  1. Moose Mob, we have exchanged a few PM's in the past. I like your mostly hands off policy of moderating, so thank you. It's refreshing to be moderated by someone who doesn't think that the forums exist as their own personal blog, so thanks again!
  2. No kidding... I could have sworn you were trolling for a debate. In the future please try to be more careful with your posts. You could probably start with the same title, but for the subtitle you could have posted "I need them" followed with a question about why others need them too. That way the future posts would be just the way you want them. I answered honestly and so did others. To assume everyone else is looking through the same rose colored glasses is kind of silly in hindsight, don't you think? Let's chalk it up as a learning experience and cache on.
  3. Yep, that's about right, almost. I think the first step is that you would have your posting rights taken away, either for a period of time or maybe even forever. I guess a lot would depend on the severity of what you posted and if what you posted was true or not. I suppose if you keep abusing the website by posting with sockpuppets, harassing other users through the email option, or perhaps posting inappropriately in your geocaching logs, this would get you banished from the main website as well. We have a pretty good reviewer in our area, I haven't had much trouble with getting caches approved, although others might have. I can't remember if I thanked him or if I just take his service for granted. I know that when he's not around, another reviewer steps in to take his place. He's usually approves my caches quicker than the regular guy, and is very polite with his emails. I'm pretty sure I've thanked him before, probably more than once. As for the moderators, I suppose the place needs them even if I don't personally. I'm pretty good at sifting through the posts I want to read and those that I don't. I am thankful when they leave me alone though.
  4. Actually, when I look at the top of the page to see what the topic of this thread is, it reads: Reviewers/Moderators, Do we need them? So that is the topic of the thread, not the appreciation of Moderators or Reviewers. Furthermore, you then ask the following questions: You then go on to answer your own questions with your opinion. It seems, though, that you are not liking some of the answers by others, and are trying to supress those that express an opinion that is different than your own. If the moderators are the ones who ban users from the forums, bringing up a banning seems on-topic to me, considering that is the motivation of the poster in answering the questions you asked. I think if you are going to ask the questions, you should allow the others to answer them. Some of those answers will be different than what you would like to see. Discussion forums exist for discussion, not just pushing one opinion on others. If you want to start a post that just praises the moderators and reviewers, you should close this topic and use the button you mentioned to start a new appreciation topic. You can then word the topic and questions more carefully, so that any opposing opinions would truly be off-topic. Thanks for starting this thread where we can discuss whether we need the Moderators or Reviewers, and how the forums might be without Moderators. It's an interesting topic, I'm glad you brought it up.
  5. Speaking for myself, yeah, I've thought about it. I give thanks when I feel I need to, not when someone else feels that I need to. If you haven't received my thanks yet, well, maybe you have to work a bit harder for it. If you have received my thanks, then you deserve it. Oh yeah, interesting post. Thanks for bringing it up.
  6. As long as there are no official rules as to how to play, anything that the website lets you do should work. If a new user is allowed to log multiple finds per cache on this site, it must be ok because the site lets them. At least that's how it goes on this brand of geocaching. Nobody says you can't go try another brand of geocaching that is more in line with the type of geocaching you prefer. As far as frisbee rules go, frisbees don't fly really well in a forest, too many trees in the way. Should we ban geocaching in the woods and just hide micros out in the open?
  7. What's this? Another survey again? Whatever happened with the last survey? Did people like micros or not?
  8. Ok, but what kind of geocaching will you be doing? The real kind, where you find the container and sign the log, or the new kind, where the owner gives you permission to lie for trying really hard? How long has it been Criminal? How long have you been beating this drum? Maybe posts like yours is the reason he's taking a week off. Agreed. Give it a rest Crimnal. El Diablo LOL, you lasted about 4.5 hours.
  9. Alrighty then, see you next week too! Anybody else? O.k...see you next Tuesday. El Diablo ok then, bye bye!
  10. Alrighty then, see you next week too! Anybody else?
  11. i hate to say it but i would be more turned away by a post like this then a e-mail from a stranger I understand the point your making here but at the same time it comes off like you think any one with less then 500 finds is uninteligent or to new to count i have 9 finds as of today I am a Cacher maybe not as well worked as your self but remember you yourself was a noob once to with others that were better then you did they offer help kind words or assistents please don't feel this is a attack on you or any others here simply the way i feel no flame no hate just thoughts Huh? By noob, I mean new to the game. Yes, I was a noob once too, perhaps I still am in some ways. I never mentioned any number, 500 finds is something you are just making up out of thin air, I never mentioned or hinted at any number at all. I personally think the noob cutoff number is way lower than that, like maybe ten.
  12. I'll bet most of the noobs who don't reply were probably creeped out from receiving emails from some stranger, wondering if they made a big mistake by coming here, and wondering if the emailer knows how to find them with their GPS. Most probably aren't aware, or forgot that others have a way to contact them. I remember reading posts by noobs who thought others could find them if they had a GPS. It's probably better to let the noob make the first contact. The "I'm watching you" notes in all of the caches in their caching area probably don't help either.
  13. I used to have quite a few caches on my watchlist, but now I just have a few. I don't care much for bookmark lists, I think I might have had one at one time, maybe it's still there, I don't know. While I loved my watchlist, what turned me off to using a watchlist was the inability to remove more than one cache at a time. Caches that get disabled or archived would remain in the watchlist, and over time would need to be deleted. This was such a PITA. Adding a bulk delete option would seem like a simple programming change, considering that everything else on the website can be done in bulk or selected from one page, (ie. the .loc files, modifying a PQ, or setting cache attributes), but it's probably harder than I'm thinking it is.
  14. You can buy an Eddie Bauer collapsible trekking pole for about $19 or less at Target. Walmart probably has it too. If that's too rich, go to an ice rink in your town that has some high school hockey games and find a broken hockey stick. Just cut off the blade end, the other end will probably already have a nicely taped handle.
  15. I found one under a water tank recently. That counts, doesn't it?
  16. They don't go psycho. The arrow is supposed to point you to the coordinates, and the coordinates cover a few square feet in most places on the globe. If you are already at the coordinates, which way would you expect the arrow to point? This is why you need to switch from the arrow screen to the coordinates screen once you start getting close. And yes, once you are there you have to do the searching. Unless you have the "locate GPS" thing like BadAndy. When I started geocaching, I remember that some earlier geocachers had already coined a term "loose bearings". Well there really are no "loose bearings", so I assume it's just bad spelling. You know, the "lose" vs "loose" mistake many people make. As you head towards the cache, you try to follow the bearing. The bearing is the direction you need to go, while the heading is the direction you are actually heading. Once you arrive, your bearing is no longer needed, so you lose your bearing, or discard it, it is no longer needed. I think there were some who actually believed that their GPS compasses had loose bearings, literally.
  17. I think they call these Garden spiders down in Texas.
  18. Rikki Rockett of the band Poison used to geocache as Poisondrummer. He hasn't logged in in over a year though.
  19. I know of at least 4 copies that I could have logged instead, including this moving one:
  20. That picture was of the original. When the cache was active, the coordinates were right on the statue at Liberty Island, so I logged the original. What a beauty!
  21. Statue of Liberty cache now archived. S.O.L.
  22. I would leave it active, maybe one of the future finders will post how deep it is, then you'll know.
