  1. Actually the 2006 season started in January. Oh, yeah? I didn't realize your count reset on the new year. News to me. It's amazing, isn't it?
  2. Go hide a cemetery cache. I did just the other day. Thanks! I'm sure it's a lovely cache then. I don't care what anyone else may say about it. I'm sure it's just fine the way it is.
  3. The first cache was a bucket buried at the side of a road. It had a log book, some trade items and a can of beans. Except for not being buried or having food items, the game hasn't changed much. Some people think that if there is no hike, than it isn't a geocache. Looking at the maps, it appears that the original was practically a drive up. I like hiking as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure where the hiking requirement came from. Or the woods, or the ammo box, or any other of the silly definitions people have for their image of geocaches. Briansnat might have a trail outside his front door, so to him it may not be a geocache unless it's on a trail. Other people don't think it's a geocache unless it's hidden in the woods. Tell that to the people who live in this town. Sorry, but the film container more closely resembles a bucket than the ammo box does. As for me, the game has always been about finding something that you hid, using my GPS. Not sure where all those other illusions come from.
  4. Huh? The only sour grapes I'm seeing in the forums are from the underacheivers who want to take the numbers away from the people who value them. The term "number ho" seems to me to be a derogatory term created to lessen in value the acheivements of some of the most experienced players in this game. I like my numbers and I'm not ashamed to say so. I work hard to increase them every chance I get. The higher the number, the more experience I have gained and the more places I have been. I've been to more Walmarts than I would have ever thought. I like Walmart, and I'm always glad that when I travel, someone has anticipated my visit and can point me in the right direction. Same goes for Cracker Barrel. When I started geocaching, I had zero finds like anyone else. My numbers are a reflection of the experience I have gained and the places I have been. A long time ago, there was a "Leaderboard" and almost everyone competed to move up a few rungs. It was a healthy competition that everyone used to watch and comment on. At some point, the really dedicated cachers rose above the others and the sour grapes began. The Leaderboard went away. With it went a lot of geocaching activity. My activity dropped off sharply. You see, a lot of people used to use the Leaderboard as friendly competition. Yeah, competition, imagine that. Not like some game of T-ball where the score is always a tie. So while the small group of underachievers cheered the demise of the Leaderboard, most of the players suddenly lost their game. It's this same minority group of complainers squeeking the wheel, pretending that everyone else feels the same way they do. Now there is a new Leaderboard, and I compete against myself. My prize is watching myself move up in rank. If you want to play, you are welcome. And if you don't want to play, you don't have to. And for the guy who is ashamed of his 47 finds, don't be, since that number isn't high enough to make the Leaderboard anyway, so I would never know it unless you told me. Ask the question again when you hit 5000.
  5. Probably, but I can't name one offhand. The ORIGINAL STASH TRIBUTE PLAQUE has just 57 more to go to hit 1000.

  7. It already exists. You can copy your logs to an offline database and delete your finds. You can also change all of your finds to notes. Either option will get rid of your find count, and many have already used those options to keep their numbers private. That would be way too difficult for most people to do. If people can't put their caches on to a Palm how do you expect them to load their caches into a offline database? Plus who's going to go back and edit hundreds of caches to turn them into notes? Plus there is nothing wrong with logging a find. A simple checkbox would be a lot easier. Plus you missed my point, if most people started hiding their find counts, it would make a community statement, and the quality of caches would improve because it wouldn't be about quantity anymore. I looked at your find count, it's very impressive. Although mine is not as high as yours, I'm still proud of it. I've been striving to reach a one cache per day average, and I think I may have reached that just last week. I guess I'll know the next time I run my Cachestats program. I think those that really want to hide their counts have already taken steps to do so, and some even have regrets. I don't think that the whole game should change for everyone else because hiding your find count is too hard to do. We all know how the game is played going in. I think it's already changed considerably from it's roots, but that's probably a good subject for a completely separate thread. I also don't think that hiding your stats will make the quality of caches any better. I believe a bad cache has more to do with experience of the hider than anybody's find count. I think it's just an eagerness to hide a cache, without a lot of foresight. A person who places bad caches will probably still place them whether your find count is visible, or not.
  8. I love it. Especially the cute redhead in the doorway!
  9. You can call up the individual APE caches and see who has visited and read about the experience in the logs. However, I don't mind sharing in the forums that I also did Mission 9: Tunnel of Light, and that it was an awesome adventure. That's the only one I found so far, I hope the others are equally awesome adventures, otherwise it will be a big downer. The logs on the ones I have seen all indicate a lot of fun though!

  11. I've never met a cache I didn't like. Okay, maybe one or two, but nothing to complain about. If someone hides one by a dumpster, how can I complain, if there wasn't one there before? That's as silly as complaining about a micro in a spot where an ammo can would have fit. If it was such a good spot for an ammo can, why didn't you hide one there first instead of complaining that all of the good spots are taken? We have a geocacher in our area who loves to complain about micros, even tried unsuccessfully to get them banned on many occasions. He complains about how many micros there are while at the same time boasting about how many "normal" caches are nearby. However, since he caches so rarely, he could never find all or even most of the "nice" ones, even if he tried. I guess he would rather complain about micros. We have another geocacher who lives away from the city, but never has a nice thing to say about the urban caches. His logs reflect his distaste for these caches, but he comes to look for them anyway. We read the logs and laugh to ourselves. Some people just like to complain. I realize that finding a cache in a trashy area may be more of a challenge for the less experienced, but with today's mapping and filtering tools, you can pretty much weed those out. But to complain about one you didn't even bother to go look for? Puhleez! Try finding a few caches instead of complaining, you might just enjoy yourself once in a while.
  12. You may be confusing the Mapquest map with the Mapquest link. There is a link on your page, just no map. Maybe it takes a couple of days to show up?
  13. Whoa, Planet sure looks good all dolled up in that outfit!
  14. Don't gash the geo I believe the attributes are available to choose when you post a cache. If you see attributes on an existing page and want to know what they are, just hover your mouse over the icon and a small descriptor should pop up. At least it does using IE as a browser. Hope this helps!

  16. I think that if your total geocache count is under [x := Corp_of_ Discovery_stat_total + 1] then you are still a novice
  17. Without you there's no job? Without you there's no baseball? Without you there's no geocaching?
  18. Nothing wrong with praise. His post left the door open for other opinions though. It would be easy enough to post a "praise the mods and reveiwers" thread, he chose to spice it up with his message title and question. If you ask the question, you should expect the answers will come.
  19. It has everything to do with geocaching. Without these people there would be no geocaching on this site. The only angst in this thread is caused by you and a few others. If you don't like the topic, don't read it. This thread was started as a nice gesture and hijacked by people like you. I've asked nicely that you start your own topic if you disagree with this one. If you have a beef with me take it to PM or email. El Diablo I have been entirely on topic, the topic that you started. I will now send you a PM to explain this to you so that the discussion can continue, but please don't accuse me of hijacking your thread, because I most certainly did not. Look for the PM where I explain to you about how I did not hijack your thread and have stayed on topic.
  20. You know the more I think about this, the more I think that this topic should be moved to the Geocacaching.com Web Site discussion group. It really isn't a Geocaching Topic at all. A good moderator would have been all over this. You would think that someone who has been here for 5 years would know which forum group to post to. ( I've probably done this a couple times myself ) So anyway, in an effort to remove the angst from the Geocaching Topics discussion group, I suggest moving this thread to the proper group, or closing the thread entirely. I don't see why you couldn't just thank your reviewer/moderator by email or PM. That kind of thanks should be forthcoming on it's own, certainly we don't need to be told to do it and it's not as if the reviewers/moderators are going to quit if you don't.
