  1. Anyone else having trouble accessing the main site besides me?
  2. I thought Groundspeak owned the database of geocache locations.
  3. Why is it in the garbage pile? Oh, garmin, nevermind...
  4. Well, maybe just poor design than a bug. The other day I submitted an entry in the Botanic Garden category. The submission had required fields and would not work unless the fields were filled out. I ran into 2 problems, the first required field asked for hours of operation. Currently the summer hours of operation are defined by hour, but when the season changes the closing time is at sunset. The required field only accepts a number, and you can't leave it blank. There is no way around this and no matter what you enter, you will be providing misinformation. The second problem I see is the required field for admission price. Again this field must be filled out with a number. The garden I listed is free, but there are parking fees involved. In addition, the parking fees are not uniform, there are reduced parking fee days and different rates if you are a senior citizen, etc. So admission might be free, or not, depending if you consider parking costs. I think mandatory fields need to be re-thought.
  5. There's over 20 caches on the bike trail alone, try doing a search from 60601. Evanston's got some caches too, try searching nearby GCN5QG .
  6. Gas has always been expensive. Today's prices seem a bargain though, if you put things in perspective. When I started driving, we complained about 52 cents a gallon for gas, and drinking water was free, bottled water hadn't been invented yet. Today we pay a buck or more for a 16oz bottle of water and complain about $2.50 a gallon for gas. We pay more for water than we do for gas! Gas prices have to climb a whole lot more to make it seem like water is a bargain again.
  7. I'll be happy when this thing evolves into a usable site. There are many good ideas being proposed, I'm not sure why they haven't been listed yet. Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be lots of common sense proposals that are not showing up in the categories, but some oddball ones like pikachu sitings and painted fireplugs are. I'm not trying to belittle those by any means, but I'm just kind of curious how those made the list when other more obvious choices seem to have been left out.
  8. Just wanted to express my thanks to all of you who helped out to make my trip enjoyable. You all know who you are. Thanks, you guys are the best!
  9. As someone who likes to jump in with both feet whenever a new feature is announced, I think I'll pass on this one, at least until I'm assured that there is a way to mass delete the insty-things.
  10. Thanks for the info, I'll fuel up in Detroit and spend the savings on souveniers or something.
  11. Also, just curious about gas prices in Ontario. I'm assuming I would be better off refueling in Detroit, before entering Canada. Now I'm off to try to figure out my best driving route. It sucks not having maps on the GPS. I guess that's how people did things in ancient times
  12. Yeah I saw that. I was hoping I could evaluate it in person on my GPS. I don't visit Canada often enough to justify my own copy though.
  13. Seems to have kicked in now, guess it's on a timer
  14. Yes Topo US is just gray. I don't think I ever tried Topo Canada, I think I may have tried something like Streets Canada, I think. Does anyone want to trade evaluation samples?
  15. Hmm, didn't work. Maybe you have to wait until the 60th day...
  16. I'll be passing through Ontario from Detroit to Niagara Falls in the near future and was wondering what the maps are like for that region, and how it would make my trip a little easier. I only have the US Mapsend for my Merigold, and Canada is pretty much greyed out.
  17. Isn't life wonderful? I think that when http://geocache.google.com is finally released, this will be a free feature. Hopefully there will still be people listing here, we need this measly one-horse institution if only to have some place where people can come without crawling to Google.
  18. I've been "flying" over the area using Google Earth which I highly recommend if your computer can handle it. Installation was kind of funny, "download" didn't seem to work at first so I tried "run" and then it installed with no problems. I haven't spotted the area yet, but I'll keep flying a bit each day. I realize chances might not be good, but on the plus side, if those old concrete things are gone now, they still may show up in the aerial photos from a few years ago. Play with the controls and have "roads" turned on at first. Once you get used to it, try tilting the screen and flying, it's almost like being in the plane. If you go off course, straighten out by dragging the road towards you.
  19. Perhaps, but European children learn the wrong lessons too. Europe isn't a continent on it's own, it's basically a subcontinent of the Eurasian continent, a peninsula, if you will, of a much larger landmass. If I recall, the Europeans did not like the idea of not having their own continent and having to be a less significant subcontinent. To get even with the Americans who knew this, they started the rumor that both North America and South America are just one continent. Now, everyone knows this is foolish, since continents are geologically determined by the six tectonic plates: Eurasian, African, North American, South American, Antartic and Australian. Geographers, unlike geologists, felt that the Europeans have enough troubles of their own, and drew up some maps for the Europeans so that they would think they had their own continent, winking to the rest of the world at their inside joke. Now the cat's out of the bag, I hope it doesn't turn into a bad hair day for you. All this is moot however, as I was essentially describing how I perceived Russia as a nation of people, geo-politically, if you will.
  20. How do they get past the barbed wire and dogs? Perhaps geography-wise there is a small portion of Russia that might fit that description, but I always considered Russia to be a part of Asia before considering it part of Europe. I guess there's that Kaliningrad part, suprised nobody has tried to reclaim that yet. It's not part of the EU, not sure if that organization is a good enough measuring stick however, as it's future appears to still be a bit shakey. Europe Asia
  21. I've been playing with http://earth.google.com/ It was nice just "flying around". You can even turn on lat and long lines as you explore, tilt the angle of the screen, plus lots of other things like crime stats and stuff. Just when I thought this was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time, for free mind you, someone tells me you can drag and drop a gpx file onto the display. I tried it with some pq's I had saved, and it works great.
