  1. This is a bit early, but does anyone have anything planned for next Monday?

I'm off the entire week next week for Thanksgiving. We're going up north for the big day but we're not leaving until Tuesday night so I have an extra day to kill.

I would love to but I can't yet. I hope to be able to go out with you guys on some easier hikes during Xmas break. :D Can you believe that I haven't found a cache since the Big Bear event almost 3 months ago!

    Slacker! :)

;) I agree...Slacker!!! I put a 1/1 on the Strand. We could push you in a wheel chair to that one!!!

(I hope the healing /therapy is going well Pat)

Thanks. I'm walking with a brace and the help of Vicodin but I'm slow. It was my first day back at work since the surgery. They called me the Bionic Man at work today. :D I have 4 more weeks of PT and then the brace comes off for good! :D

I was just thinking.. I bet your still faster than me..:D

  5. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression on the dates. Here how it's shaping up.

Pushawalla Trail on 11th. Recommended Parking (due to vandalism) is the Visitor Center which opens at 8am - Starting then should give those of us coming up from San Diego plenty of time to get there. Lunch/Caching - Work our way over to the campgrounds.

Bradshaw Trail on the 12th - If we're camped at Wiley's - We can start around 7:30am after breakfast.

    Any thought??

My work seems a little unpredictable right now for the weekend. It appears that I have to be there Sunday which is right in the middle of multiple 4x4 adventures! Why! Anyway, I hope everyone has a great time. I will have to do these runs and hikes another day. :D

  6. Anyone else have any input on the Pushawalla and Bradshaw to share? :)

We are planning on walking the Pushawalla Sunday Nov.11th..

Darn, your going out a week earlier then us. Let me know how it goes?

We will let ya know how it gos for sure! we have done walked some of the other trails in the area and loved it!About half way we are wondering where the guys on the tricycles are! []

I thought you post was for the 11th? My work changed some downtime, so I can now make the event, but am trying to get the Sunday watched so I can campout.

  7. After thinking about it some what I may do for these days is drive up Sunday Night and camp somewhere near the south-west end of the Bradshaw Trail, drive north-east Monday morning to the end near the 10, drive over to Box Canyon Road and take that back south-west for the first day.

After researching your post, this loop looks tempting too. Only I'd have to do it Sunday & Monday. :D

Do you have anticipated beginning and end coordinates for each of the trails? I am trying to visualize the runs.

    TA

    Pushawalla (which is the Power hiking trail - 5 mi) is located across from It's well Preserved(GC109B3) @ N 33° 50.316 W 116° 18.468 - On GC.com you can see the caches - Like 30+

    Bradshaw north point (off the 10) would be near Happy Meal McCache(GCE264) @ N 33° 36.657 W 114° 54.048

Bradshaw southern point (near the Salton Sea) would be near The BRADSHAW TRAIL #1(GCMDJT) @ N 33° 30.350 W 115° 45.943

Camping Sunday Night might be near The BRADSHAW TRAIL #25(GCMDMB) @ N 33° 29.449 W 114° 53.285 Zoom in on Google Earth and you'll see it (BLM's - Wiley's Well Campground)

Box Canyon is a road through the area starting near Dump HERE(GC11AHE) @ N 33° 34.373 W 115° 59.816. This heads north back up to the 10 Fwy.

Sorry, I'm not as savy as some of the other cachers in the forums that can put links in their post.

This is great information. Hmmm, a 5 mile hike. I will have to look at the elevation for that one. I will look at the the waypoints your mentioned. It will give a good idea of where I will be and where to do a pocket query.

    Thanks - TA

  8. There is an event up north there is a group doing 4x4:

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...42683&log=y

I may not be up there on the 10th until the night or the 11th. I am planning on camping out and 4x4'n over the holiday weekend. There is also discussion happening on this thread:

  9. I just noticed that Tombmaker is now a member of team !. Tombmaker! When will there finally be two members of team " ". I need to email my son, armynate. Probably Armynate! by the end of the week.

Very interesting! I still have not received my 'application' for team !! :D

Maybe you submitted your request to the wrong team. Shouldn't you be part of team ? ?

    That's funny! ;)

Hmm.. Team Adelos? or Adelos? :)

  10. OK, so we will take up a collection at the Nomex v. Ramius event on Saturday. Bring your spare items (and from personal experience, I can recommend gift cards from places like Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, shopping centers, etc.) and we will make sure they get to them...

Great idea Tom! The event is a great place to collect things.

Since we are on the subject, has there been any word of other cachers that lost their home?

    And this means..... :)

  15. WOW, I was just looking at doing that trail {Bradshaw} this morning sometime next month, I wouldn't be able to make the Pushwalla part due to my work schedule, but my days off are Monday/Tuesday. So depending on how early of a start you were planing on Monday I might be in. I would be coming from the San Diego area so a 3-3 1/2 hour drive would be required, but I don't mind getting up early to go or staying out all day to complete.

If you have any more details on times or starting location that would be great.

I also live in North San Diego County so I know what you mean about the drive. My plan was to camp at the Wiley's Well Campground which is at the North end of the trail and work back to the Salton Sea. The campground don't have water so that makes them more of a primative type. If their full, the BLM website say you can camp within 300ft of the trail except in designated wilderness areas.

Another cacher told me it was about 4 hrs to do the Bradshaw trail. Can someone else confirm that? I'm thinking with the time change, maybe a 8am start.

The book I have shows 4 hours for the trail. That excludes geocaching which can greatly increase the time. I may be up the for the weekend and this is a trail I have also wanted to knock off my list. It may have to babysit my work servers during some power testing on Saturday, but if it gets rescheduled, I plan to be up there all weekend and also be at the event. If not, there I may go there Saturday night and stay till Monday.

    Paul

  16. Thanks for the information on the meeting Tom. We looked and the site has not been updated yet but we are definitely going to help in any way we can.

So glad to hear that our caching community is doing ok. And we send love and light to those who are hurting from this. Through this I must say that it has been deeply touching to see everyone out there come together and offer support during this time of crisis. It speaks loudly of the human spirit and the hearts natural reaction to reach out and connect when there is no time to 'think' about it. There is no desire to know what ones beliefs, life choices, or affiliations are. Prejudice and judgement has no place then. The innate instinct to connect, comfort and console each other comes alive.

That is truly a beautiful thing.

    The Slaby's

    Nicely put.

  17. Here is a Google link where you can change your source address to route to around via the earlier directions.

    Route to Desert

We also saw that Ramona opened up. If 78 or 79 open up, then we will take that way. Unlikely though. We should be up there around 8pm to setup camp. Less people mean we have a better chance to win the contests. :( Of course, we would prefer to see everyone and understand if others can not make it.

  18. Hi Everybody!

Just a final word,........er, maybe second to final.........

**********THE CAMPOUT IS BEING HELD AS PLANNED*****************

If you aren't sure of an alternate route due to road closures, check Skillet's and Chuy's posts on this thread, then look at a map. Those routes aren't much further, and we may be able to return via 78/67 on the way home. Use your best judgement and be safe!

Of coarse, the CITO Event will go hand in hand with the campout......

We just finished my 'Vampire Chili' :( and it is simmering on the stove........however, our eyes are burning and watering now, we don't know if it's due to the smoke or the chili! :(

So, we're off to Costco to pick up last minute stuff.

    SEE YOU ALL THERE :(

    The Splashes :(;)

We are still planning to go! I do have a question though. How do you get to S2 if that part of 8 is closed? Couldn't you take 8 to Japatul Rd/Japatul Valley Rd then up to 79 to banner?

  19. Hi all . . .

I am here, staying with my friend Rita, crashing on the floor of a house in La Mesa where her son rents a room. I stayed at my place until Tuesday, a day after the Mandatory Evacuation order was given. So far, my place has been saved, but according to the map on cbs8.com, the Harris fire is very close. My place is just west of "Four corners" in Jamul.

My friend's place off Honey Springs was saved . . . but only because her husband walked in after they closed Highway 94 and Honey Springs. He activiely fought the fire as it burned nearly everything around their property . . .

Looks like when I have more time I have lots of caches to Disable . . .

    Thanks for all your concern.

    GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

    SlabyFam

Glad to see everyone checking in.. and safe. Has anyone heard about anyone loosing their home?

  20. Sorry if the news on Encinitas and Carlsbad was a false alarm, but they did announce it on the news early this morning, perhaps due to Rancho Santa Fe fires. All that area seems to be under control now I think.

They arrested several illegals at Qualcomm just now. They admitted they were being paid to go into Qualcomm over the last couple days and take free stuff out, stuff that was for use at Qualcomm, not off site. Someone in Mira Mesa was paying them to steal the stuff.

    Parsa

Ah, free enterprise at its finest! :)

    Incredible!

  21. And now for the "If you give a man a program, he'll be frustrated for a day. If you teach him to program, he'll be frustrated for a lifetime" part...

This is the quick and dirty, brute force method. There is probably a more elegant but it's late, I'm tired and this worked...

    1. Save the polygon as a .KML file.

    2. Open up the .KML file in a text editor and strip out all the XML goo (in other words, just leave the list of coordinates)

    3. Search and replace to convert "0 -11" to 0<cr>-11" (this puts everything into comma delimited columns. <cr> means "carriage return")

    4. Save this as a .CSV file.

    5. Open up the .CSV file in Excel

    6. Delete the altitude column (third column that is all 0s)

    7. Swap the longitude and latitude columns

    8. Save as a comma delimited file (.CSV), but use a .TXT file extension.

    9. Either load this file into the GSAK polygon filter or open it and cut and paste into the GSAK polygon filter.

Very cool how you can do that.. thanks for the walk though. It is amazing how big this fire has gotten.

  22. Hey J&J,

The news just showed one of your neighbors not wanting to leave because he had over 40,000 mice in their house! :) Hope those don't get loose. Good news is that they said each house and an engine while the hill side below burns out.
