  1. We used to call it Fox & hounds on the CB band... That being said, there are other options available... You can find (and I'm sure the Ham operators can do a better job) items kinda like this: ebay listing It can be used to provide a Modulated 'BEEP' on the UHF band. The closer you get to the 'device' the more beeps you hear. It broadcasts the first beep at full power, the next a little lower, etc... so the closer you are the more beeps you hear. They have been used to track lost RC airplanes, etc... That being said, and not getting into the legalities of it. FRMS/GRMS radio's fall into the UHF band. So it could be done somewhat cheaper...
  2. Just wanted to say I received my turtle today and it is even better than the photos! I love it!!!! Thanks Tsun for designing such a gorgeous coin! SCBrian & SCYoli
  3. PP, I can show you how to regulate the CO2 down enough to function for what you want to do, however it'll cost you quite a bit to make it practical. I've used this method to drop the operating pressure down to about 40psi, to operate a pneumatic tire pump. When triggered it raises the tire pump and then a spring retracts it. I use it for a portable Halloween "scare". I had to make something that was 'self contained' for the scare. You need 2 20oz co2 tanks (~$15each) Rainbird sprinkler (~$12?IIRC) A paintball CO2 regulator 30-80$ An Air source regulator (~10$) Bike pump (~8$) (some modifications) Various hoses and fittings. (~10$) Some kitchen sponges Tank #1 in the photo is the source tank. Puts out at about 800~ PSI @ 70*. It immediately goes into a paintball regulator dropping the Pressure to ~100psi. Then into the air regulator to drop it to around 40PSI. Tank #2 had it's valve removed, was stuffed with sponges, and valve replaced. It acts as a storage tank, and an expansion chamber should any liquid CO2 get into the line. The rain-bird sprinkler activates and the pressure from the CO2 raises the bike pump. Sprinkler turns off, and a spring returns the pump to the starting position. I went cheap on this and it only cost me about $20 to build. But I had all the parts to hand except the air regulator. I can see the tire pump being replaced with a good Bimba valve, and a few other mods, but it's worked well so far... Hope it's helped...
  4. Version 2 is really nice....(hoping that there is a version 3). I missed out on both runs of the geojellies. Although geom&m's would be cute too.
  5. Well, I'll start by quoting his rule #5 at least two forms of encryption, at least one is a cipher, at least one one isn't. I know he liked the Baconian cipher earlier, and his "eggs" show like mirror images of himself, so I'm guessing that's part of it. I asked M32 yesterday if he'd consider Columnar transposition a cipher, he said he wouldn't, so I bet Byrned fish picked up on that as well. Picture in the background is Cairo (I think) though I don't know if the pyramids are visible from Cairo...
  6. Ahem... OK, Comn LadyBee, nose outta the book, theres clues afoot!
  7. there's always the Ballistic knife: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_knife But in all seriousness, try looking for a self defence course. train your mind and body. I know there are a few places over here where they will train you with small staffs...
  8. Shortly after bragging about my immunity to Poison Ivy to fellow cachers, I found a nest of chiggers . This was at the beginning of a LONG day of caching. Karma Sucks! edit for spelling..
  9. I wonder if Moscow32 considers Columnar transportation a decryption? Use the square to get a string, then play around with the string in columns?
  10. AGTSFAPEJIIFUSHGCAEASSDDFFOOSNMTHBJDCNZMSCTZRNSRFAKBDDPYPTIS (moscw x moscw, abc) ztghuzkvqrrufhstxzvznnwwullhmngsyqwxmamhxgaimsiuzpywocmuwkbkgrh (moscw x moscw, zyx)
  11. Hints from Moscow 32 to date: Using a Caeserian Shift Cipher, the first hint translates as: "We of peaceful London City have never beheld—and please" That is the opening line of Chapter 32 in Vanity Fair. **** I'll make some points which shouldn't be considered as hints. 1- The answer has absolutely nothing to do with geocaching. 2- Some of you are on the right path. Keep on going! 3- The game isn't Identify the Moth... It's solve the puzzle. **** The next hint: the cipher has been named lex parsimon iaej (lex parsimoniae (Occam's razor) **** There is no key in the grid! No second decryption is required! The tip was more to just convert your roman numerals to a number.
  12. for anyone who needs it: AGTSFAPEJIIFUSHGCAEASSDDFFOOSNMTHBJDCNZMSCTZRNSRFAKBDDPYPTIS should be the text decoded using moscw x moscw on the square with no keyword. (please double check me at this point as I have about 10 dozen strings of letters)
  13. Been logging todays finds, and working on grids, logging finds, running cipher text through Rot 1-25. cussing at the computer. I probably would have kept this pattern up if you hadent posted the time... now I'm tired too! Luck to those on the west coast, and down in OZ.... edit for spelling.... Should you ever need a good Caeser Shift (or ROT 1-25) website, this is my all time favorite: http://www.antilles.k12.vi.us/math/cryptotut/caesar4.htm It runs all of the shifts at once. Thanks, I'll bookmark that one! The clue deciphers to: There is no key in the grid! No second decryption is required! I think we may have been overthinking it

  15. I'm surprised no one has hit this yet. Unfortunately I've got nothing new to add, and I'll be out and about today. Good luck to those who try!
  16. back to square 1? ok, it's time for those of us on the east coast to drop off to bed and try not to dream about random strings of MOSCOW & IO Moth running through my head. Good luck to those on the west coast!
  17. something else to think about, in the original string of letters there are some repeats in a row: MM CS CS MC MC OM OM SW SW CS perhaps someone can use this to brute force something out of it?
  18. your right, you did. Just thinking out loud... the more I think about it, the more I like it, but I cant seem to make it work, I'm feeling strongly that "Vanity Fair" = Mirror & Playfair; but I cant see it working. I like the ADFGX cipher and it makes more sence, but...?
  19. surteb - I wonder if you might be onto something: it answers the book question I've been having... Thank God I've dealt with Sissy and fendog in my area! "Vanity Fair" Vanity = Mirror; fair = fairplay (the basic square cipher)
  20. code words to think about/play with Moscow (and derivites of him) ...Mscow,Moscw, wocms, wcsom Moth, I O MOTH, Lepidoptera, Automeris io, and all backwards spellings. I'm not to far from unconsciousness, so I've a feeling the left coast folks can build on the framework...
  21. The mirror thing sent me looking at other ciphers and I hit this dead end: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon's_cipher But I was scarred away by a swedish rock group..
  22. I thought about that also - because since the answer is one word, not all of the groups of letters can mean someting (not many 26 letter words exist) the answer doesn't have to be in the text. it could decode to something like "whatistwentysevenplusseven" or whatever the answer would then be "thirtyfour", which broken down would add up to whatever...
  23. My daughter has a vanity, it has a mirror on it... "Vanity" = mirror image? would tie in with your thoughts on the moth, and why he chose that particular book. Of course all the stuff I learned about the book and the time period I learned today, goes out the window... So far I think we've reached a consensus it's a square, followed by some version of cipher text. I think we just need to figure out the right keywords...
  24. Hmmm.. My hobbies include Paintball, wildlife(reptiles), and photography.... Could prove to be... ummm .. an interesting blend..
