  1. A must do cache Last of the Mohicans Try the pub at Ystradfellte which is nearby. Its been a few years since I was there but the food was superb.
  2. Thanks for the link J&B. I did do a search to see if this had been covered before, but didn't use the right keywords. Maybe I'll send an e-mail and see what can be done.
  3. A local cacher has been in dispute over one of his caches and as a result has disabled them all. Unfortunately, he has been quote aggressive in his comments regarding another cacher and all of his caches have now been archived. Disregarding the personal disputes and ignoring who is right and wrong, I Think its very sad that at least two of these caches are now no longer available. Can they be un-archived? or have they gone beyond the point of no return.
  4. Well I`m game. Maybe next year rather than disturb the bats during hibernation. I`ve got a few pics of Box mines including cranes and some superb 19th century graffite. If I can get my scanner to work I ll post them. So Moote is a Red Rose member. We have probably met in Bernies or The Marton Arms....you don`t need to be a caver to appreciate a Marton Arms pizza, just hungry. The same applies to a Bernies` breakfast. The South Wales CC has a virtual tour available on-line here this is Ogof Fynnon Du (sp) one of the best caves in the country. Saves getting wet and expending too much energy. Just keep clicking on the pictures to find your way. Dave
  5. I love Box mines and have spent many hours lost in there. I have seen some really silly incidents too. Two teenage girls with a single torch between them, a group of a dozen or so with a tilley lamp as their only light source, two chaps lost with a cigarette lighter and a ball of wool being their only guide. None of these parties had helmets. I once went up to one of the far workings with a chap named Hine. Our goal was the "Fraser / Hine" wall which he had built several years earlier to hold up the un-stable roof. He was very proud to have a landmark named after him. When we reached the spot, the wall had collapsed under a huge slab of rock. (sorry John ) Now (being all growed up and sensible) I would not recommend going into the mines unless you are a competent caver or with a competent caver who has a reasonable knowledge of the workings. Having said that, my early trips were as a teenager armed only with the survey which pre-dated the SMCC survey and wandering aimlessly until we found a light at the end of the tunnel. Pot kettle black?? There are some great things not to be missed, standing next to the air shafts from the Box tunnel while a train goes through is scary, and the damp-proof courses in the MOD sections are just silly. There is some superb graffiti and the cranes are dangerous but fascinating. Anyone fancy a trip? Dave
  6. They let people like this have guns??? Pheasent shoots are often loud affairs with large groups of people surrounded by land-rovers. Rather than stalk the birds, the birds are flushed towards the guns. Don`t worry about being shot, you are far more likely to be run over by a 4x4 or a mountain bike..... maybe the hi-viz is a good idea. Dave
  7. I haven't placed a cache yet but when I do, it will be a great cache. I believe that quality is better than quantity although the two combined would be fantastic. Dave
  8. The thing I love most about this forum is how civilised and friendly everyone is. So congratulations to everyone for being the nicest forum that I use. This isnt the busiest forum on the web and so the congratulations threads seem to stay on the front page longer than they might on a busier forum. The Ebay Q+A board for example, sometimes has similar "I`ve reached 100 feedbacks" threads and they are usually off of the front page within twenty minutes. The pat on the back is given and the thread disappears. Everyone is happy. I could understand the problem if important topics were being lost off the front page because the congratulations threads were taking over. The last three threads on the front page (at the time of writing) have not had a post for three days. I don`t think anything is going un-noticed. I`ve only to find a further 89 caches before I get my own 100 congrats thread.....please keep allowing them until then. Dave
  9. I wasn't really lost at all. I was eleven years old and camping with the scouts. It was day 4 or 5 and I hadn't used the latrine. It was getting desperate and as a shy 11 year-old I sneaked off to the latrine in a tent in the woods without telling anyone. Given the timespan since I had last been, I had a few difficulties and things were not as simple as they should have been. Anyway, it was a great camp full of late night stories by camfires and lots of physical activities during the day. Sitting there alone in the latrine I fell asleep.......for four hours. We were in a wooded area with lots of caves and quarries all around. The scout leaders had been desperately searching and had called the police to help in the search. I was only found when one of my fellow scouts needed the latrine. Given the circumstances, a laxative might have been more useful than a GPS Dave
  10. Actually, there are three friends all called Dave. We are Dave the cave (me the caver), Dave the rope (the climber) and Dave the photographer. Easier to remember than surnames. Dave
  11. I have a very fancy hair-cut and people often call me Dave the wave. I spelt it wrong.
  12. Can you find a cache by divining? Yes. Been there and done that. The hermit and the waterfall. As a skeptic, I am actually quite amazed by it. I don`t know how it worked or if I could do it again. Maybe it was the clues, the location description, an obvious hiding place or a mix of all of those things. Have a go but beware, it is quite spooky. Dave
  13. I'm in the UK where hand-guns are illegal wherever you are, concealed or otherwise so maybe my perspective is distorted. Our criminals don't tend to spend much time in the woods so you are probably safer out there than antwhere else. I don't know if the stats are the same in the US, but here you are far more likely to be raped, murdered or assaulted by someone you know rather than by a stranger. If one of my three step-kids was going to be hurt, I would automatically be the first suspect. If I was able, I'd probably carry at home where it is really dangerous (statistically anyway) Dave
  14. Ideomotor effect? Maybe but when I ask directions for the hermit and the waterfall, my GPS points into the Severn. My coat-hangers point to the Severn Bridge. When I've saved up for the toll I'm going with the rods. Dave
  15. Here's a trick to try at home. Make a pair of rods from an old wire coat hanger. The handles should be about two inches and the rods between eight and ten inches in length. Hold one in each fist loosely and hold them thumbs up and parallel. Place a coin on the floor a few feet away and walk towards it asking the rods where the coin is, while you walk. Most people, most of the time will see the rods cross on their own accord as the rods reach the coin. If it doesn't work, try again a few more times. I've seen some real cynics scratching their heads as they discover their hidden talents. I believe it is the individual's sub-concious that causes the movement of the rods but it still seems to be quite a powerful effect. Could you find a cache? Probably yes, but only because your sub-concious has a good idea where a likely spot might be. Dave
  16. I am a newbie who 'stumbled upon' geocaching.com. http://www.stumbleupon.com/ And am now hooked when time allows. Dave
  17. I haven`t done the cache, but I know the area and the cache location quite well and it is a fantastic place. If you have a few hours to spare and a good pair of boots. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...2b-955899617704
  18. Thanks for the replies. I started with the nearest to home and I am working my way outwards. The next one is Wildcat which I understand has a bit of a reputation. Wish me luck. Dave
  19. Thank you for the warm welcome and the explaination. Does this mean that the "published" entry is not a find? Dave
  20. Several of the caches near where I live have a log entry which just says "published" The user profile suggests that he checks and approves new caches. Is this done in an official capacity? And, why is it only on certain caches and not all of them? Dave
