  1. ~A first hand account from my 2010 Mega Scotland shipments. I shipped product from Canada to the UK and then shipped the product back that didn't sell. Based on the declared value (marked shipment low) I was charged VAT, brokerage fees and other handling fees totaling about $400 going over and nothing when it came back. I used Canada Post which then transfers cartage to Royal Mail and the reverse to send them back. Shipping was additional.
  2. You could also ask at the Centralontariogeocachers forum.
  3. Ah, NP, you must not have seen Delorme's new Topo 9 package! It is wonderful for Canada. Since Delorme came out with the new PN-60, the PN-40's are now more affordable and available second hand. They are only a 1 year old unit though, so a good purchase if you can find them. I had mine at all the events we were at this summer and certainly drew some interest with the orange gps that was unfamiliar to many. I also use a Garmin Oregon with Backroad Mapbook on SD card, but the Delorme is my grab n' go. Mr. LS is a fan of his 60CSx but is drooling over the new 62... I know there are some really good topo maps to be had from Ibycus etc, but we still favour the SD product for it being all-encompassing. Did you know that Backroad Mapbook have have just released the SD maps for Ontario? We're waiting for our first shipment to arrive .
  4. If you bought it on your credit card and your credit card has any protection for purchases, you may be able to use that. Garmin US has been known to be very sympathetic. Do post back here when you get resolution and if necessary, you can tell Garmin that the folks on the geocaching forums suggested that you contact them...
  5. I love it when old threads come to life again! We are planning to do some 'gopher hole caching' in the next little bit . Our son is routing his GPS to Moose Jaw for a good long spell it seems, so of course where son is posted, parents will visit (and cache) . We'll keep an eye on your region on the Groundspeak event calendar and try to time it right!
  6. We didn't know him personally, but we remember him too each year. It's amazing how he touched so many lives.
  7. Victoria?? Did you ring the doorbell? We just cached from here (Victoria) to Port Angeles, WA, Forks, WA, Astoria, OR (amazing cache quality), Cannon Beach, OR (best town and beach for dogs... paws down!), Yakima, WA via Hwy 12 past Mt Ranier, Spokane, WA to visit our friends at Cache Advance, Nelson, BC (Pirate Territory), Osoyoos, BC (wined a little ) a back road trip to Keremeos, BC , then back to the island. Whew! Thursday we're off for some Terrain 5 caching with the kids aboard SV Jolie... if there are any T5 caches left out there to find within a day's sail of home port! ...And we do it again this long weekend to end the school holidays with a 5 star difficulty on a 4x4 road near the campsite up island.
  8. ~oh gods of duplicate posts~ don't you have someone else to bother tonight?
  9. We'll be watching the European location with anticipation!
  10. Here is a map that may help you too. Spirit of 2010 Trail map. You can zoom and also view the legend and elevation profile using links at the top of the map. Our original maps are in kiosks along the trail... all 72 of them . We drove part of the black dotted line (Poulson Detour) spring 2009 and it was very rough with no place to turn around in a truck and camper (we were looking for a place to 'stealth camp'). We may have been able to drive it in our Jeep with much patience, but have not gone back yet. The Spirit of 2010 trail would be much easier to travel on than the road! I second the recommendation to bring along some companions who can scare off beasties if need be and let people know where you're going. The fast moving river is a long way down, so make sure and pack lots of water for an August walk.
  11. Dear COG'rs, We have 'attended' may Spring Flings in spirit but to be there in person this year and be part of the collective energy was incredible. The 'after party' was quite the event too and then the caching itch took over and off we went into the night! Thank you for inviting us and allowing us to display our wares and especially thank you to everyone who stopped us on the trail or came by our booth to introduce themselves (and their geo-pooch). The orange shirts rock! Your local reviewers rock! We loved the tour on Sunday (thanks RCA) . Scratches to Timber - you are one cute pup! Did you start a thread somewhere for your small surplus of COG shaped event coins? I'm sure they won't last long and I have a few requests in my inbox for them. Word make it to Australia it seems! Chris n' Helen
  12. I think you would get a few great recommendations from hike-n-bike who caches and lives in that area. Let me see if she's around... We don't get far north often enough (I'm sure they'd agree!) so it's best to check with the real locals who are there on a day to day basis. We did find a cool graveyard cache that is a MUST DO if you can get to this area. GCH8R8
  13. We have had a different translucent colour palette from our factory for over a year now; we are no longer using the one that you have posted . Note to self: update the translucent images on our site's Geocoin Manufacturing page! We are still showing the old translucent images!
  14. Congrats!! If the National Parks in Ontario get on board you could see a whole new mindset in the provincial parks... after all park visitors tourism dollars are what they're after!
  15. As a Noob, care to translate those acronyms, and say where they will be . Also I have seen that Amazon.ca has all the delormes coming in june! I have made my decision I am going PN-60. Seems like everything is coming together. Pretty reasonable price too. $399: http://www.amazon.ca/DeLorme-Earthmate-Han...544&sr=1-86 Sorry, and thank you sincerely for the humbling reminder that we post for everyone and not just the acronym literate. GWVIII = GeoWoodstock - July 3, 2010 in Carnation, WA COG SF6 = COG Spring Fling 6 - June 12, 2010 near Barrie, ON Maritime Mega = Maritime GeoBash 2010 - July 10, 2010 Bridgewater, NS POI - Points of Interest PQ - Pocket Query The reason they're coming in June is because their new release of topo maps in June are going to be for all of North America and not just the US.
  16. I am using a Delorme PN-40 and I love it . There are new North American maps coming in June 2010 which include topo for Canada. Right now the base map is excellent, its got streets (routable), waypoints, POI's, etc. I love the Cache Register program for uploading caches from PQ's - that's a really slick little gadget . It's accuracy is the best of any GPS we've owned - often 2m when others in the group get 4m. In reality, when it comes to caching, the accuracy is only as good as the GPS that marked the cache waypoint though! Cons: It doesn't do Wherigo and you can't 'beam'. I acquired this one at GW in Tennessee last May. We offered to try it out in Canada and give feedback to Delorme who were hoping to get into the Canadian market. We said that they really needed to work on their maps for Canada and lo and behold we're getting new ones this summer! Feel free to stop by our booth at COG SF6, GWVIII, and the Maritime Mega if you want to see what it's like in person.
  17. Are you driving through BC on one of the major routes or heading to one destination in our province?
  18. For heavily-travelled areas, maybe. For wilderness areas, I'm afraid the inactivity-or-three-years rule will kill the whole game. (Caches have 3 years to live, max, or less if they're inactive.) I plan to hike to a remote cache in a BCPP that hasn't been found for a while. What if a ranger yanks it for "inactivity" just before we get there? BC Parks wanted the 3 year rule in place so they had a clause to have a cache removed if necessary and so cachers would take a moment to ponder their cache hide location every now and then to ensure it was still 'well placed' and being visited. If it's not getting visited anymore, then that's a key time to take it out. The rangers are not going around taking out caches after 3 years and there are many historic caches that are in BC Parks and they are quite content to have them remain in place. BC Parks suggested that if there was a particularly nice area that wasn't getting visited they may recruit a local cacher via the BCGA to place a cache in that area to attract more visitors. I don't think you need to worry about 'heavily-travelled' areas being where we hide caches - those do exist, but there are some incredible places in our provincial parks that not many people get to see... unless they're geocaching! Regarding the remote cache - you might be wise to send a note to the cache owner to see if they've checked on it since it's last visit. It could have succumbed to a demise worse than a ranger! Also, it's unlikely that a ranger is going to take time to go to a remote area to remove a cache - they just don't have the manpower to take on that sort of additional workload.
  19. There are some in Victoria and some in Nanaimo, but because they are minors I should probably not publicly post their names or profiles . They are out there, that's for sure! I don't know if they are active on the Canada forums, but you'll find the ones I have in mind on BCGA or VIGPS.
  20. Gazillions... maybe more even! If I look back at the CF Geocoins I can probably name close to 200 of them!
  21. ThePetersTrio - we have a brand new site since Nov 13, 2009. You can create an account (it will save time on the next order) or check out as a 'guest' and nothing is saved. Being able to create an account was something that regular customers had been asking for. You can look and see if your order has shipped, etc. fairyhoney - that price is for the whole set - 4 coins, 4 icons and 4 tracking numbers. Backs?? Hmmm... I forgot to check if they have backs ... ... ... Yes, I just looked and they *do* have backs! Whew!! I'll ask Chris to send me some pics to upload.
  22. This West Coast theme totem was designed by our favourite First Nation artist Tom Spetter. A tremendous amount of thought went into the hierarchy of the images and how they work together to create balance in the ecosystems here on the west coast. We have named it the West Coast Eco Totem and each coin has it's own icon. Note: The Raven icon is live and the rest will be live later next week. Raven - The clever Raven represents the rich heritage of the West Coast. Sea Otters are making a slow recovery... protect the ocean. Man has the power to maintain the balance of nature... or not. Protect the Frogs and you will preserve the balance of nature. The two-tone coins are separate, but stand together as one to create the totem you see before you. Sizes are: 31.7mm, x 25.3mm, 28.7mm x 32.1mm, 32mm x 19.3mm, and 28.8mm x 21.6mm. Thickness is 2.5mm, plating is black nickel and recessed polished nickel with sandblasting. Footnote: Thank you to Avroair for suggesting this stacking totem - a new way to present this great style of art! In conjunction with the sale of this coin set, Landsharkz will be making a cash donation to the GWVIII committee to help them fund the upcoming event in Carnation, WA. Click here to purchase the 4 coin totem set - $33.00 CDN! Watch for matching PINS and aluminum TRAVEL TAGS coming soon!!
  23. At the suggestion of Aaron and Tess, we are carrying ALL their GeoAchievement coin and pin sets from 100 to 9,000 and they are flying out the door . We are receiving shipments almost weekly from C&P. Also, when the coin code retrieval site doesn't respond according to plan, we always get same day replies for codes from Aaron - thanks!!
