  1. I got my own set of customized wooden nickels and a car charger for my GPSr. I was pleased!
  2. If you have to hide a micro, find someone who is diabetic and uses test strips. The containers are just about the same size as a film canister but are waterproof (because the test strips have to stay dry.) So far the one I've used has held up quite well!
  3. Lithiums last longer - had been using them in my digital camera, put a set into the GPSr, and they seem to last quite a while longer than alkaline! I had used rechargables, too, in the past but they don't seem to hold the charge as well as they used to.
  4. It's sooo hard to be patient when I sent off my request right away, still haven't seen one, and read posts where others just mailed requests and have already received their jeep! They must be working from the top of the pile down, then someone comes in and pours more on top. (I sent mine in right away too. Still waiting.) I think you're right about the top of the pile - I FINALLY got mine today, postmarked August 2nd.
  5. In this case, I would check with the person who logged it into the event. It was logged three days after the event, so it may just be a mileage drop and it hasn't actually changed hands yet. As for how bugs were handled at the event, the MWGB TB Depot handled over 700 TBs and coins out of over 1400 items that were logged into the event. Roughly half of the items logged in were either personal items (Milage Coins/Bugs, Coin Collections, and Tagged Avatars) or tagged items that the holder did not bring to the Depot. The 700-some travelers were grouped by availability and cachers sorted through to choose the bugs they wanted. They were limited to take only as many as they had brought (roughly) and we think this has helped to keep the loss rate down quite a bit. I think we're down to only 40 (not including the personal items mentioned above) of the 1400 items being unlogged and it does seem like those items didn't make it to the Depot. It takes a lot of time to sort through all 1400 items, though. Believe it or not, there are people keeping track of what needs to be logged, but I think we're at the point where the remaining unlogged items didn't make it to the system and we can't be more help than the person who logged them in. Good luck. I logged a TB, Baby Book, into the MWGB and personally left it at the TB depot. It still shows up as being at MWGB. (at least it did the other day when I checked.) So is there anything else I can do at this point? It was a kids plastic softcover book like a baby could chew on. So some baby cacher out there probably is very happy!?! I dropped about 7 other TBs there and all have been picked up and moved on. One was a brand new TB that went to California from MWGB, then was logged into and out of a cache in Paris, France yesterday during a layover on the way to somewhere in Africa! That's what having TBs out there is all about, watching them move!

  7. A friend (Golfdiva) and I went caching all day yesterday in the heat and humidity of Michigan. She is off work for a few weeks so this was a good time calendar wise for us to go, despite the weather! I know the air temp was in the 90s and the heat index probably was in triple digits. Still, we had a great time solving some tricky multiple stage multi's, including PB-2's Riverwalk. We were both in shorts (yep, LOTS of scratches on the legs!) and I wore an under-armour type t-shirt as well. We tried to stay in the cooler woods whenever possible, drank lots of water and sports drinks, and rested when needed. Air-conditioning in the cache mobile between caches. We survived pretty well overall. The two previous days I did a few local caches but started out really early and quit before noon when the heat/humidity really started to climb. Just be careful out there if you cache in the heat/humidity - be prepared!
  8. Sent in my request right away, and still no GJTB. Missed out on the distribution at MWGB because I had to leave before the weekend, so hope it's just a mail glitch and that I will be getting one soon.
  9. Sigh! Still nothing from GC on my AOL account.
  10. I noticed on the instant notification thread that the Groundspeak people saw the problem and did some fixing. I'm hoping that the only reason they haven't yet responded to this thread is because it was started over the weekend. I, too, have AOL and have not received any GC e-mail for several days now. Hoping there is a solution soon! (BTW, my instant notifications haven't been working for longer than that...maybe when that problem was fixed, it overlapped with the AOL problem?)
  11. Y'know, I've been using a Cobra GPS1000 for just over a year now. It can't be too bad, because I'm closing in on 500 caches, mostly by myself. Went out with a friend yesterday who had a Garmin, out of 8 caches I found 7 of them first with the Cobra before she found them with the Garmin.
  12. I'm a woman who usually caches alone. Hubby and two sons (20 & 18) just aren't too interested though they've gone with me a time or two. I do carry pepper spray and a hiking stick and use common sense as to where I go and when I go. (I won't night cache by myself, for example.) It's getting me out and getting the exercise, both physical and mental. Love it!
  13. Actually I'm in that minority that has a Cobra GPS and likes it. I get no end of hard times from other geocachers, but it does what it's supposed to do. Someday I may upgrade but for now I'm doing just fine. Those caches I can't find tend to be my own blindness, not the fault of the GPS (though I'd like to blame the GPS, just can't usually do so.)
  14. What do you mean, how many of you MALE geocachers were in Scouting? I've been a registered member of the BSA for over 10 years and am currently serving as a Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, Troop Committee member, and Venturing Crew Committee member. Geocaching fits right in! And surprisingly, my two Eagle Scout sons and my Eagle Scout husband go geocaching with me VERY rarely and reluctantly when they do. You'd think they would be just as interested! Oh and I was a girl scout growing up, I think I would have been a Venturer if they'd existed back then.
  15. So how do you make your text in different colors in a cache log? I pasted the This is blue into a log and nothing happened. (It was one of my own caches, I used it as a test.
  16. First time night caching, also trying to get my first FTF. Also, had finally convinced my two sons to go with me. We get to the site, no visible trail that any of us could see. So did some major bushwhacking about .3 to the general area, even had to make our own bridge (with a fallen log) over a little creek. We finally find the cache (2nd to find...) and were looking it over when the cache owner came up to us. After talking, he offered to help us find our way back and proceeded to lead us directly to THE TRAIL...complete with bridge over the creek. My kids are still giving me a hard time over that one!
  17. Hi - the only pet in our house is one cute guinea pig. He won't use the harness & leash so he can't go caching with me...
  18. I haven't seen anybody mention using a Cobra! I've been using mine for about six months now and it works pretty well for me (the 1000) It has a SD card so I can load maps into it. Bought it on clearance for a decent price. May get something better someday but for now I'm happy.
