  1. We rented an RV last month and drove to Ohio and West Virginia. I so wanted to do some WVTim or other gadget caches; I also wanted to do a challenge trail near Coopers Rock State Forest where we stayed. We did not pull a tow vehicle so that really limited what we could do (having a Muggle Hubby doesn't help either...) I found rest area caches were my best bet while on the move. I was also able to do some caches in the parks we stayed at - mostly earthcaches and virtuals but I took what I could get... Once we were at our campsite, there was no moving around just to cache. It was only when we were moving from site to site. We decided not to pursue the purchase of an RV, for many reasons but it just wasn't the right move for us at this time. If we ever change our mind (after I retire) we would definitely use a tow vehicle. That would make caching much more easy!
  2. Biggest goal is to finally find 1000 caches in a calendar year. Also have one more (3/5) to complete my fizzy grid. It'd be nice to complete my jasmer too but just found out I'm back to 5 open months instead of 4 with Ancient Lake having its placed date changed.
  3. We are transiting through Incheon Airport in August on our way to Tokyo. (4 hour layover each way) I've noticed on the geocaching map that there are several geocaches located right outside the airport terminal. I would love to be able to add South Korea to my countries list and wondered if anyone in transit has gone for any of those caches? If so, what was involved and how much time should I allow for getting through security/immigration/etc.? Thanks for your help!
  4. Thanks Keystone and Cezanne for your "square" answers. I had hoped there would be some sort of work around. Cezanne, I was known for my red logs, so I really wanted them to show red to everyone so the script you mentioned probably won't work out. But thanks for offering.
  5. I get that many people were never fans of colored, cutesy logs. I very seldom did anything but all the words in red with an occasional emoticon thrown in there. I'm looking for any possible solution to being able to log in red again... And I do see where the Header 3 turns the log to green....now if my name was GreenhedMary, that would work. Right now everything is only in black, does that make me BlackhedMary?
  6. I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to retain the color in online logs. Y'know, in the old coding, you could enter in [red] and your entire log would turn red. I've been writing red logs almost since I started geocaching, and the change to the new coding has changed them all back to good old boring black... One of the things I am known for in geocaching circles, well at least locally, is that all my logs were in red. Now, not only do all my logs start out bracket-red-bracket, I get a message every time I open one that I should get rid of the old coding. Does anybody at Groundspeak realize how long it would take to change almost 7000 logs? I know overall the switch to the new coding was a positive one, I just wish that the ability to change color would have been retained.
  7. It's a signature item put out by a popular company whose name is not generally allowed to be mentioned here. There should be a (name).com on the tag as well. It is yours to keep, trade, or give away in another cache. The tag number allows you to log it on the company's website.
  8. I have a Vanity Challenge - need to find 10 caches where the owner put their own caching name in the title of the cache. Limit of one cache per owner, and you can use your own cache as 1 of the 10 if "you're so vain..."
  9. I'm going to be attending my first block party - it happens to fall on my birthday and the trip is a nice present to myself I'm going to be flying out there (using air miles!) and staying in a private rental within walking distance of GCHQ. I'm planning on going out to the APE event on Sunday as well and have found a ride out there with a local cacher, through the event page for the APE event. As far as forming a group, I'm thinking that may come naturally.
  10. Try AddHam, MIBarrelMakers, or SpartanAlum. (look up their profiles on gc.com) All Grand Rapids cachers that are known for creative containers and good hides. There are many others, of course, in the area. Those come to mind first. Your idea sounds interesting, hope they can help.
  11. One of my caches is called "Meet My Future Neighbors" GC3NGPZ. It is hidden on my future gravesite. Our site is in the row closest to the outer fence, and the cache is at the fence area. The headstone (when it is installed someday) won't be right by the cache. I've always liked visiting cemeteries. There is a lot of interesting history in them. So why not be able to cache there, as long as the placement is respectful (not near graves) and cachers are respectful when visiting.
  12. Well...my hair/"hed" certainly isn't nearly as "red" as it was back in 1995 when I picked it for my AOL screen name. Then when I started caching in 2005, it was the natural choice for a caching name. Wouldn't want to change it now, I'm too well known in these parts for the name, and my signature red ink both in logs and online.
  13. Sooooo....this is the only attribute that I don't have. Sounds like something I should have, as I've found at least one dinosaur train cache, have found one APE cache, and even a few official Boy Scout caches (from the 2010 100th anniversary collaboration between the BSA and Groundspeak.) How do we get those caches (I think the dinosaur one would be easiest) to add that attribute?
  14. The Bertha Brock event in Michigan has been held at the same place every year.
  15. I picked up a TB in April that had been previously picked up in September 2006 in a cache in Mexico; dropped 4-26-13 in a cache in Ada, Michigan. Almost 6 years later.... TBGKYJ Purdy's Green Wreath
  16. Here's a few of me (and one of my caching dog, Max) that you are free to use. Would love to see the finished product.
  17. We have prepaid much of our final arrangements, including our cemetery plots. Geocacher that I am, I couldn't resist a cache placement. It's called, "Meet my future neighbors" and the cache container is right on my plot. I suppose once I'm actually "there" (hopefully not for a long long time) my Muggle Hubby will probably move the cache container. Sigh. Pretty sure he won't go for a cache container IN my headstone.
  18. I was able to use "play anywhere" cartridges with my iPod touch running the Wherigo app. (no additional GPSr required) That did, of course, limit my options. Just bought an Oregon 450, it still has the Wherigo player built in and now I can do any Wherigo. Will probably pull the app off my iPod now, come to think of it.
  19. I just bought an Oregon 450 and it still has a Wherigo player in it. Working just fine so far with the exception of not being able to enter a very long answer into a cartridge.
  20. Yep, checked the tracking number several times. They are all clear letters and numbers, none of the "tricky" ones are part of the code. It does come up as the right kind of cachekinz, and says it's not been activated yet. I found it on Sept. 25 in the Rainbow Bug Motel, GCM697. It's a firelfly cachekinz, with a laminated attached tag that gives its name, Piper's Firefly, and states it's in honor of baby Piper's birth. There is a log, I believe it was Sept. 6th, from a team named edingeoteam, that specifically mentions that they dropped off Piper's Fire Fly. So not sure if they were starting it there or just passing it along. I've written to that team twice through GC.com and no reply. What I will probably end up doing is activating it myself, but keeping the mission and everything else intact, just in case I ever do hear from that team.
  21. I picked up a travel bug last week. Nicely done with a laminated tag explaining the bug's mission, etc. Tried to log it and found it it hasn't been activated yet. I looked back at the cache's recent logs, and one mentioned leaving the travel bug. I have written twice to those cachers asking them to activate it, but have not received any replies. First time I've come across this situation in 5 1/2 years of caching (and I've moved a LOT of bugs and coins...) How long do you think I should wait before activating this? I'd really like the original owners to activate it so they can follow their traveler. The tag mentions that it is in honor of their baby's birth. I could go ahead and activate it myself and transfer ownership if I ever do hear from them, right?
  22. Well, my cache was logged with "D" not "V." : ) but by the same noob on the same day. I considered emailing him to let him know that longer logs are generally more appreciated, but never got around to it. Didn't know he'd logged so many on the same day, and all with just one letter, until I started reading this topic. Never got any reviewer (or any other) email claiming that this cacher's finds were bogus. Never crossed my mind to delete his log, either. Though annoying, it was a log entry. And the cache in question isn't my closest one, so I wasn't going to make a special trip out there just to check the physical log. Learned my lesson on hasty log deletions. I had two noobs log one of my caches a day apart, both noting that the cache was wet and in need of maintenance. I had just checked the cache a few days earlier and it was fine, and no rain since then. So went out and checked anyway, no signs so deleted the logs. Emailed the noobs to tell them why. One responded with a description of the container and where they'd found it, and I realized (and later went back and confirmed) that they had found the original container that had been reported lost. I couldn't find the original either at that time, so replaced the container. Emailed the noobs back and apologized for my error, invited them to re-log but neither ever did. As far as this case goes, I do wish the noob had at least written an explanation in their log as many have pointed out. It would have saved a lot of hard feelings on both sides.
  23. The one in Lake Michigan is GC1D6ZQ, Fireboat Dive Site, by FJFitzgerald. It's off Saugatuck, just off a shipwreck in 73' of water. You do need SCUBA equipment for it - so it would be good if your trip takes you that way. The FTF is gone - it has had one find in about two years. The owners are friends of mine. I'll never find it, though, since I don't dive and don't anticipate I ever will 'cause I get claustrophobic when the mask goes on.
  24. I bought a Cobra 1000RLX for my husband for his birthday in April 2005. Thinking it would be good to use on motorcycle trips. He's just not that much into technology, and really didn't use it. Meanwhile, I had heard somewhere about geocaching, and when we went camping for a weekend at the end of June, I tried it out. Needless to say, I really liked it and Muggle Hubby (as I call him in logs) regifted the Cobra to me with my blessings for my birthday that August. It served me well for several years, then I bought an etrex venture hc in October 2007 which I'm still using, as well as a Nuvi 200 for paperless caching.
  25. Muggle Hubby (as I refer to him in logs) really thinks that caching is one of the biggest wastes of time (and gas, and wearing out the car) that is in existence. Both of my adult sons feel the same way. All three of them are Eagle Scouts, you'd think that they'd be more interested in an outdoor hobby. Having said that, he has cached with me a little bit. He was actually with me on my first find, which was with the GPSr I had bought him. He later regifted it to me with my blessing when I discovered how much I enjoyed caching. When we are touring on our motorcycle, he will stop for a cache if it is easy and quick and right off the road, like in a rest area. I can only push my luck so far here. My sons will occasionally go out with me for a few caches, like if there's one that is too high for me to reach. And MH made me a really great cache container out of a log, and has even repaired it a few times since I've put it out. Like a previous poster, I think that spouses can and should develop interests that are separate from each other, as long as they have some shared interests as well. Sure, I wish that the family was more interested in caching. But I don't let that stop me from getting out there on my own.
