  1. I ordered one for my 62st and it's on the way. I'll report back on it when I get it. Dave Ordered it on Tuesday from Amazon (but shipped direct by GizzMoVest) and received it today (Thur) - that kind of service is unbeatable! The case fits my 62st very well. It is clamshell, hinged at the bottom, and held closed by cinching the attached lanyard. Easy to put on and remove. It has a dimple on the side to delineate the on/off switch and I don't have any problems activating the switch. The belt clip is removable. No problems accessing the buttons. About the only addition I would make would be putting a screen protector on. I think this will work quite well. Dave I actually got one as a demo from the manufacturer for my 62s. Via LinkedIn, they were looking for people to test it and use that word of mouth as free marketing. A pretty good plan I thought, until I tested it. The quality of the GizzmoVest is really good but not really practical for my needs. I found it cumbersome to take on and off (which is required for loading new caches/changing batteries, which can be a daily occurrence at times). The case protects the buttons quite well, too well for gloved hands though... Which in my case is a big downside for caching in an Alberta winter. I found the removable metal belt clip to be really tight and very cold on bare hands (see earlier comment about not functional with gloves). I also found the string that comes with it not very practical. I couldn't use it as a lanyard or even attach it to one effectively. This is just my opinion from my experience. I'm sure there are others who are very satisfied with theirs.
  2. Could be listed on anther site. Could be a final cache for a multi-cache, or Unknown/Puzzle cache. This punctuates why it's so important to label the cache and logbook with GC code, cache name and contact information.
  3. +1 As I've said before, I don't care whether lab caches are left out of the find count (like benchmarks) or if lab caches are included in the find count (like grandfathered types or like locationless caches). But including them in the find count in some places but not others is annoying. I want just one find count (even if it is ultimately a meaningless number). Here, here! I agree, I don't care about how many numbers I have, I'm only concerned that they are consistent...
  4. I too would like to see a special souvenir for this special anniversary. Thanks for your consideration.
  5. I don't use the site all the time but another cacher friend just informed me the site is down. [] Checking on whois.com, the domain expired Oct 24th. Hopefully they'll get it back up soon.
  6. I've seen some of your logs for the 'painted utility boxes', since then I've noticed a lot more popping up around town. I even saw one being painted on Macled Trail. I'll have to race you to get more published. right, what I'm really wondering though is what's the best way to get that list. Sometimes I select all on a page from Search Results but that only gets the .loc files. I prefer to have the GPX so I get more details (as I can't remember everything about all the waymarks).
  7. Thanks, the GPSMap 62s will only hold 2000 waypoints. Sorry, I didn't mention that's why I'd like to load them as POIs, which from my understanding will not take up space for waypoints/caches.
  8. Hi All, I've been thinking about doing some Waymarking while on vacation next week. The reason I haven't done more in the past is because I find it cumbersome to load more than a few waymarks. In my searching, I found this post from Jan 31, 2010 on the old forums. I have bolded the statement that interests me. I use GSAK, have a waymark DB and did a File | Export to Garmin POI. I get the GPI file and load it into the Garmin folder on my GPSMap 62S. This does not seem to work for me. Could someone provide some advice into where I am going wrong? With GSAK creating the GPI, do I still need the loader? Is it as simple as placing the GPI file in another folder? I also created the macro the blue quasar describes in this post with no success. And in this last post, the blue quasar talks about an updated (July 2009) custom POI. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  9. For me, it's the ease of doing a PQ to find those LPCs. The management of gpx files is much easier on geocaching.com. In fact, I came here today to find an easier way to get a full gpx for Waymarking rather than clicking on each one and loading the page then downloading the gpx. I like Waymarking but just find it too cumbersome to get into seriously. But I will keep looking. thanks. Hilarious, I'm picturing a dead pan delivery as well. My 14 yr old daughter (who is not much of a caching fan anymore) has asked me to create some waymarks for cool things we see.
  10. My apologies, I just looked again and it was the topo coverage map I was looking at that does not seem to cover Great Falls. It's great that the trails are already there. Did you just scan them in because I still can't find a gpx or anything electronic on the page. I'll be on the lookout for Sweetgrass tracks or submit my own once I get there. Thanks for all your efforts.
  11. Hi All, I'm thinking about coming down to Great Falls from Calgary this year. I was looking around for trail maps that could be loaded on a GPSr. Looking at Moun10Bike's NW Trail Project, he hasn't had any submissions yet for the Great Falls/Sweetgrass Hills area. Does anyone know if anything is available? I have done a search and found some paper maps for River's Edge Trail but nothing to load in a receiver. I have also looked previously for Sweetgrass Hills trails. After camping at Writing-On-Stone for many years, I have decided I need to climb those hills! thanks
  12. Sweet, I'm coming to Ottawa in May and I've been looking for trail maps. I also found the NCC trail maps. How do those compare? Thanks for your efforts!
  13. Lots of people - even me! Have you checked out the Calgary Area Cachers forum? LOL, I've been known to on occasion. We have an introductory course on Feb 25th (GC3AXCN) but seasoned cachers are welcomed too. Also, we're having our family friendly monthly Pizza & Beer event (GC3ANP7) on Feb 29th (usually last Thursday of the month). Also, if you are on meetup.com, we have a Calgary geocaching group where we organize cache outings and mainly try to introduce new people to caching. Hope to see you out!
  14. I use it to keep track of a friendly rivalry between me and one specific team of cachers. We have been leap frogging each other for months and it's fun to give or get a jab when we meet up at events or do a little friendly trash talking through the local forums or facebook. Of course, this is possible because we know each other and I wouldn't bug someone I didn't know. Plus, being in Alberta, my community is a bit smaller than yours (UK?) so I know a lot of the other names too. I see how my other friends are doing as well. I don't know if you went to the UK specific page or not, so here it is: http://www.cacherstats.com/United_Kingdom1.html. Maybe that will be of more interest to you.
  15. Thanks for the reminder!, I've registered for the event to get my coins and t-shirt. edit: brevity
  16. Thanks Kate, That was some fun wasn't it? The canoe event was a definite highlight for me. I was pleasantly suprised by the Ontario contingent who made it out. There were a bunch of you for sure. Due to a tight schedule after the mega, I had to pull out early Sunday and left my kayak at Westrock-Bob's place. I went to get it the other day and it was neat to see the town so quiet again. Lots of memories came back as I was driving around.
  17. t4e, dfx and CR have listed some great locations, I've done a lot of them and you can't go with those. If you're planning on taking Trans Canada between Lake Louise and Golden/Revelstoke, be aware that there is lots of construction (especially east of Golden) with rotating closures. There was a rock slide just this past weekend that closed HWY 1 east of Golden. Here's a link for BC road closures to help you plan. The upshot is you could reroute through Radium and grab this great EarthCache, Marble Canyon, on the way. I did this one just over a week ago (shortly after meeting t4e & dfx) and it was the most amazing EC I've done since Moneyed Waters for sheer beauty and interesting geological history. The terrain isn't too bad and there are handrails most of the way if you need them. Then a little further west is another cool location, the Paint Pots which is listed as a multi with no container to search for. I was also going to suggest my EarthCache, the Inkpots which are almost as cool as the Paint Pots but it's no two star terrain. Whatever you decide, have fun in Alberta/BC!
  18. IF that's the case and IF I lived in Ontario, I would request 02GC24.
  19. There's a "Donate" link at http://ibycus.com/ibycustopo/
  20. no problem from my perspective. I like to trouble shoot. happy caching!
  21. Sorry, I was busy at the Best of the Bad Mega event and am just getting caught up again. I'll send you a note as I know a few very friendly caching couples in and around Lethbridge.
  22. Whoops, or maybe "Vulcan's Mecca" GC142D4, the only EC in California that IS disabled. Again, just watch carefully what you're checking as options. They're not always straight forward. edit: spelling and grammar
  23. Was that one EC "Your Friendly Neighborhood EarthCache" GC19HC6? PQs can be tricky, you need to pay close attention to which area you are checking. I ran a PQ and selected Type: EarthCache, Within: California and left everything else as default. That returned 477 results, I added the 'attributes to exclude: needs maintenance' and I got 476. So I modified the query for ECs with 'attribute to include: needs maintenance' and that's when I got one result. Let me know what your results are... edit for clarity: GC19HC6 is the only EC in California marked as needing maintenance
  24. GSAK! my favourite software ever. I also won't wade into the c:geo issue, you can search the forums and get more than enough info that way. As for the Garmin Venture, it might be uploading field notes to opencaching.com [Garmin's own attempt at a caching site - not to be confused with opencaching.org, an open source site]. Regarding the debate of what's better; phone with app or dedicated GPSr? Depends on your usage, I have a friend with an iPhone who uses it to look up close caches when he's in a new area. Convenient, yes. Myself, I spend a fair bit of time out of town. When I'm on the side of a mountain I want something a bit more rugged with trail and topo maps. Also something with batteries I can swap out if they die. Additionally, the accuracy when placing caches using smart phones is not the best. You are likely to draw the ire of some cachers if you decide to hide a cache with just your phone. Basically it come down to your preference. I like what I've got, you like what you've got. We're both having fun and that's what it's about for me.
  25. I don't specifically remember praying to find a cache. Being disoriented in the woods however, I am familiar with. I lost my bearings in deep snow (even with GPSr) along a couple of oxbows this past winter. There was a real physical feeling of fear. A moment to rest and pray and suddenly I was headed to the right trail again.
