  1. I see virtuals as a good thing if they teach or share about a meaning full cultural/historical location. These locations could be places that many of us know about and visit regularly, but perhaps will learn something new. The process for logging them are not too different than some multi/Mystery caches. Go to said location and use clues/information to decode(learn) details to find the next location. In the case of virtuals the information needed to log said virtual instead of finding final of a multi/mystery cache with an actual log to sign. Seems clear to me, don't provide the correct answer, no "found it" log..... [DennisMillerVoice]That's just my opinion though, I could be wrong [/DennisMillervoice]*might be lost on some
  2. I wouldn't do that, but you had the consent of the CO. You let them know what was going on and they were cool with it. If the CO said "thanks, but I will handle it" would you still do it? Really I only did it because it was so close to home for me. Otherwise I would have left a piece of paper for my log and put the old log in a bag, and made a NM log along with my find. This particular cache is not conducive to drying out because of the way it is built. I did take the log before I asked the CO what they wanted to do about it. In retrospect I shouldn't have taken it. It could have turned out bad. Now I carry small replacement logs with me so additional finders can sign too before or if maintenance is done. Taking a cache to sign the log and not replacing it within a few minutes just shouldn't be done.
  3. I personally just did exactly this to a cache that I found. The log was soaked and all of the few contents were destroyed by water. The log was worthless to any future finder, as just trying to flip it open it was turning to mush. I left a note to the owner that I was going to replace the log with one from home. (I live about 3/4 mile away) I was able to dry the original log to a useful condition by the next day. (placed in my oven at 200f) I returned it and placed some new swag in the cache. The CO was extremely happy I did this maintenance, and made no complaints that it did not have a log in it for the 24 hours I had it in my possession.. I left the container there for others to find and possibly leave a log or a card or something. I may have been wrong for taking the log and contents. I just considered the possibility of another finder remote because it's a difficulty 4, and has few logs. Not to say somebody didn't go look for it, but it seems to me destroyed swag and a worthless log book is no better than no log book..IDK. Opinions?
  4. Can see the OP point on this quite well. I recently ran a PQ loaded my GPS with the info and then headed out to find some caches. Several description pages were clogged with TB or coin "dips" instead of useful logs from previous finders. While this seems worthless if you want to find a cache based solely on the details and description, sometimes the found/not found logs can be used to help find a cache that is escaping discovery. I see no problem dipping coins or Tb for mileage, but IMHO would love to see them get accompanied by a found or DNF log.
  5. Looks like the owner was last active May 16. Less than a month for an automated disable. I've seen other CO's inactive for months with a NM log and the cache is still active. There's got to be more to this than an inactive member.
  6. Just because you hear something doesn't mean it bears repeating. Disgusting is all I have to say to this attempt at an argument. OMG! I AGREED WITH YOU!! Which proves my point.
  7. OK, I "kept reading". Seems to me you want some sort of recognition every time you log a cache. Alright, Congrats for every cache you've found. "IndyJones1023" found ******cache.. "Like this". Do you need recognition for a find? Or is this a way of sharing the game of Geocaching? Perhaps Groundspeak has the app integration you want forth coming, maybe not. As you can see this is one heck of a topic that causes peoples blood pressure to rise. I don't really care either way. I was trying to add an option to share, so what if it doesn't work with the IPhone or Ipad? I don't use a smart phone to geocache, I use a GPSr and a real compass.
  8. There is a "Share This" add-on for Firefox. I use it regularly and with Geocaching.com. It posts links to an individual cache or to a forum topic such as this. The add-on works with all web sites so it's pretty handy.. So there, there is the social network integration.
  9. We actually have two in the San Diego Zoo. One is a virtual placed in 03, the other a traditional placed in 09. The zoo is a non-profit org.
  10. There are ways to leave a phone number (for free) for contact and be totally anonymous. They just won't be toll free numbers. In this day an age I have no problem dialing any domestic phone number, from my cell phone, I have free long distance. There is one such free provider that even give you the option to send all incoming calls directly to voicemail, where the outgoing message could be a clue or a hint in a multi..But using these free phone numbers could if used wrong be considered commercial if they are the 'ONLY' way to finish a cache..IMO it would be similar to using a chirp, but any phone would work instead of say maybe just AT&T or Verizon.
  11. Where are you located? I know of a few different "San Marcos" areas. SM California, SM Texas.... I live in Escondido CA, and our San Marcos is a stones throw away.
  12. Are you using FireFox? The plugin doesn't work with Chrome. I'm not sure About IE, I've never tried it. But I had the same issue you had when I inadvertently click the "send to GPS" link while I was using chrome.
  13. Small Power trail in El Centro CA. The "Power Up" series starting here: GC26M81 Power up With A's
  14. I just got my Delorme PN-60w last month and love it. Took some getting used to, but I just need to learn the nuances of it. Only a couple of minor complaints would need to spend $ on Ariel pics and the other related to functionality nothing wrong, just rather a personal want of mine..I wish it would show my current coordinates and my destination coordinates on the same screen. I have no plans to buy another unit for awhile.
  15. Sounds like a great idea! Though South Africa is a bit far for me. I know that the Angeles National forest by Los Angeles could use the same help. After the fires a couple years ago there are some pretty bad invasive species.
  16. Just a side note, the Google Earth plugin show the PMO caches,(but no smiley's)and I find it clunky too. I'm finding the beta maps frustrating as well. As stated above, sure I could use a PQ for caching. But during the week I use a 'Cherry Picker' type selection method, so that's not any help. I'm not really complaining, Just wanted to show my support for the unhappy crowd..
  17. I have a Garmin GPS 50. Had it since around 92/93. Used to use it for navigation on our boat. Now it's a nice relic to play with. Accuracy sucks and it takes 10-20 minutes for a sat lock, but at least I can get lost with it!
