  1. Eddie, You might want to invest in a Garmin 60 series case. It fits very nicely and is not expensive. Some here have made note that the clear screen cover of the case can interfere with the rocker button, but I never had that problem. This is likely a better solution than using a "screenshield" only. Bill
  2. Thanks Klatch, I hadn't checked the compatibility chart. Bill
  3. I'm considering buying a used eMap for my nephew. Does anyone know if TOPO 2008 is compatible with the eMap? I've read that the original US Topo works with the eMap, but I can't find anything concerning TOPO 2008. Bill
  4. Can lithium batteries be safely used in a 60CSx? I noticed there's no setting for them, just alkaline and NiMH. My Vista HCx has a setting for lithiums, why wouldn't the 60CSx? Bill
  5. Ryan, How did you accomplish getting 5 volts to your Garmin 60? I think the only way to effectively and safely hard wire any of the Garmin handhelds is to utilize a 12V dc adapter. I hard wired my Garmin 2006 on my boat, but it's input voltage range is something like 10-15 volts dc. Is there another method of hard wiring a handheld in a vehicle to make sure it only gets 5 volts dc? Bill
  6. Ron, Have you looked at the 60CSx? It's a great unit. The screen is a little larger than the eTrex line and is easier to read while driving. The battery life is not equal to the Vista HCx, but it's not bad. The user interface of the 60CSx is a bit easier to use compared to the Vista...the 60 has more dedicated function buttons. The small form factor of the Vista is really nice, especially for out-of-the-car excursions. I think your decision should be based on the majority of your usage. In-car navigation or outdoor activities? If your main use will be navigation then I would go with the 60. If outdoor activities are the main use then the Vista might be the better choice. Bill
  7. I'm looking at available options for recharging my Garmin Edge 205 when no AC or DC(auto) power is available. I've looked at the Energizer To Go with mini USB tip as well as some of the larger, rechargable mobile power options. Not sure what direction will be best without spending a lot of money to try the different systems out. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this issue? Any help is appreciated. Bill
  8. I'm selling my Garmin Etrex Vista Cx, as I recently purchased a Colorado. This unit was my backup, and as such saw very little real-time use. It looks and works as new. I have all original materials including the box. I'll also include a Sandisk 512MB micro SD card(sorry no adapter). I can provide pics. $150 plus shipping and I'll cover the paypal fees. Send a pm if interested. I have a few refs on eBay you can check @ williamj408. Bill Not paying attention and spelled Vista incorrectly in the title, oops.
  9. Brad, For your needs I would suggest getting the 60 CSx. The larger screen and more user-friendly physical interface are nice. The Vista HCx is a nice unit as well, with extended battery life and easily carried small size. The screen on the HCx is small, and as such the details are noticibly smaller than the CSx. The screen of the HCx is somewhat brighter though. It's my opinion that the CSx gets a sat fix a little quicker than the HCx, at least here in my area. The user interface of the HCx is a little convoluted, but is not difficult once you get used to it. The CSx has dedicated buttons for the main functions, and is usually a bit easier to navigate throuh the menu system. I have both units you're considering, and in my opinion the 60CSx is the overall finest hand held GPS unit available. I also have a new Colorado 400t that I expect to surpass the CSx once the initial issues are worked out through software/firmware updates. With that said, I also love my HCx for certain applications such as backpacking and cycling, where weight/size are an issue. Take a little more time with both units at your local dealer. Really run them both through their interfaces...this will likely make the choice for you. Good luck.
  10. I've got a slightly roundabout way to get accurate trail map routes in to my Colorado 400t. I produce the route using my National Geographic TOPO software and then export the route to either my Vista Cx or GPSMap 60CXs. The NG mapping software does not yet support exporting to the Colorado, but I'm sure this is in the works already and will be included in a software update soon. Next I upload the route from my gps to mapsource. I have Mapsource Topo, although I'm not sure this software is required. The route can now be exported to my Colorado. I use NG software for producing routes due to the greater detail it offers. I would imagine using Mapsource Topo would work as well, but I have yet to try it. Bill
  11. Thanks GO$Rs. I understand the search from function, but there are times I want to pan around if I'm trying to locate something nearby. Hopefully this feature will be added on a future software update. Guess I shouldn't get rid of my trusty 60CSx just yet. Bill
  12. I'm using a semi hardshell case from Accucase for my Vista Cx and it works great. It has a belt loop on the back. It's a zippered closure and has velcro inside to hold the unit tight. As for the map sets in your HCx... if it's the same as my Vista Cx then the following will get you to the window which allows you to choose which map set you want to enable/disable. 1. from the map page bring up the menu window. 2. scroll down to "setup map" and hit enter. 3. on map setup window scroll over to the 5th icon from the left, "information." 4. now hit the menu button and a list of all available maps will pop up. 5. you can scroll up/down to "hide or show" available map sets. Hope this helps. Bill
  13. I can't seem to figure this one out... I use the find feature to locate a waypoint and then show it on the map using the topo map set. It won't let me pan away from the waypoint though. My 60CSx will allow me to do this. Am I missing something here, or is it not possible to accomplish this on the Colorado? Thanks for any help with this. Bill
