  1. I have been trying to "justify" a GPS to my wife for over a year. I enjoy ice fishing and deer hunting, and I figured I could use one for both of those activities. Her worry has been that I will use this gadget two or three weekends per year. One while stalking Bambi, the other two while sitting on a bucket in the middle of a lake. She challenged me to find another use for one, so I began searching for other things to do with them, and found this place. Now that my kids are hooked, I think she is softening to the idea of another $400 toy for Dad...
  2. I keep noticing, on the Garmin page for the Quest 2 that they say: If I were a betting man, I would bet that the "NT" makes that version of City Select smaller and different than the version you get on DVD/CD. I bet it fits on less memory than the regular version you would purchase. JMHO
  3. Thanks for the help. Sorry I didn't RTFM before asking... I was missing the "hot link" aspect of your help system. I appreciate knowing that.
  4. *sigh* If only they made the Hunt in color... I have an iPod, I don't need my GPSr to play music...
  5. Obviously, you have never tried for a FTF in my hometown....
  6. Clyde, et al. What does the filter setting "Watching This Cache" do? Whenever I check only "yes" (or uncheck "no"), GSAK returns no caches. I have two caches on my watchlist, those are the two I was hoping to return with this filter, but obviously I am doing something wrong. Any advice?
  7. The first issue that comes to mind is operator training. Let's face it, a GPS is a lot tougher to run than a cell phone. Maybe not to someone who has used one for awhile, but how many people are going to walk up to someone and rent a GPS without a BUNCH of instruction? If they don't receive good instructions, they will be frustrated and HATE geocaching and GPS units for the rest of their lives. But, it would be cool to offer a lower cost alternative for people to get into the sport. Neat idea!
  8. Too Cute! Ok, I gotta show mine:
  9. God, the last thing I want is to force my wants on you. I would hope that the current functionality would remain.
  10. That's all we can ask for. Thank you. I am not a programmer (although I have played one on TV), but it seems to me, if one can view the HTML page with all of the logs, it shouldn't be too tough to dowload the cache listing with all the logs. Maybe that needs to be a standalone program that could build the .gpx file from the HTML source, but it sure would be nice to get the entire cache listing with all logs on an as-needed (or desired) basis. I am not suggesting this as part of the PQ process. Anyway, thanks for hearing us out and I hope something comes of it.
  11. I hadn't thought about that aspect, but here is my reason for wanting it. I use GSAK. I load up the nearest 500 caches to me. GSAK has a filter for "unfound" caches. When I click that, I get 15 caches that show up as "never found" because the .gpx file only contains notes and DNF's (the last five logs). Their found date is empty because the last five logs do not contain a "found it" log. I get excited because there is an "unfound" cache right up the street. I head out and find it, only to realize that it had been found 108 times before, just not for the last month. And, not since the team of five cachers from out of state didn't find it one afternoon... Here I thought I had a FTF... There is no way to edit that field in GSAK, either.
  12. Good. I may have to hurry up so my little cachers can still have one. Maybe a three pack, so we have one to leave in the woods somewhere... I could spend a fortune on stuff like that. Good thing my wife limits my Paypal activity...
  13. I have been watching them. My two little cachin' buddies (10 and 7) are into Italian bracelets, so they may each get one soon. Thanks for sharing, these are great! (And, they would make cool swag...)
  14. I think this is an outstanding idea! I was going to suggest something similar to this, but I see that a better solution was already suggested. I have a number of caches in GSAK that show as "unfound" because the last five logs were notes or DNF's.
  15. If it were me, and it isn't, I would simply take my cord prior to cutting on it and plug it into a cigarette lighter socket. Then, I would take my multi-meter and measure the voltage at the plug end that goes into the GPS. If there is 12VDC on this plug, you know the adapter isn't doing any voltage reduction and you would be in good shape wiring it directly. (I told my father that my BSEE would come in handy one day)
  16. step by step here is what I did/do: 1. Become a premium member 2. Download .gpx files (you can click on individual files on cache pages, or you can do a Pocket Query and get a bunch of them in your email.) 3. Download and install GSAK (It is what I know). 4. Open the .gpx files from #2 in GSAK. 5. In GSAK, chose FILE->EXPORT->Cachemate file. 6. When it is done, it will put the appropriate file into your quick install area. 7. Sync your Palm and it will put the caches into cachemate. Good luck. Let us know if there is a particular area where you are stuck, more detailed instructions can be given if we know where you are hung up.
  17. A Hawkeye fan and never cached in Iowa. (tsk, tsk) I started to today. We had just arrived here when my wife called me because she needed her work keys... Didn't count it as a DNF because the GPS hadn't found the third bird yet.... There are fourteen caches just across the river. One of these days I will get some!
  18. I tried to beat the heat by leaving the house at 6:30 this morning. My wife told me to take her van, because she wanted my truck. Just as my kids and I were getting close to our first cache, my cell phone rang and she realized she left her work keys in her van... So, we drove home and brought her the keys. We beat the heat by doing only about 15 minutes of caching. By the time we spent all that time driving, we were in no mood to go back. I can't wait for fall.
  19. Same thing happened to me, but I caused it. Here is what happened, maybe you did the same thing. When I began downloading waypoints, GSAK was set-up as it came from cyberspace. That is, the waypoint name was set to the GC.com waypoint name. For example, This Cache was stored in my GPS as GCJXK6. Now, while that number means something here on GC.com, it means nothing to me when loaded into my GPS. So, I went into GSAK and set it up so that it downloaded the "smart" name instead of the GC.com waypoint name. My GPS is limited to 6 character waypoint names (it is old, like me), so the next time I downloaded, it put that same cache into my GPS as "Sinnis". But, it didn't take out GCJXK6. So, even though I thought I only had about 200 waypoints, I actually had 400. When I went to put in another 150 from another area, it told me I was full. I looked at the waypoints stored and noticed a bunch named "GCXXXX" and a bunch with smart names. I wiped them all out and re-loaded only the smart ones. You may have more waypoints loaded than you think for one reason or another, but your unit thinks it has more waypoints than you do. If you have your waypoints available for download, I would delete all waypoints and load them again. Good luck.
  20. Down about a half dozen posts in this thread.
  21. They show up in all of the search results and PQ's. They are denoted with a little icon on the search pages. Also, if you notice This one, the first thing it says is: This is a subscriber-only cache. on the page. They just blend in. Because you are a premium member, you can open them. If you weren't, it would block you when you click on it. Hope that helps.
  22. If you check the off-topic forum, there is a thread for gmail invites. As premium members, you can see that one.
  23. Thanks for catching that. I meant I received three PQ's in the first five days. My point being, I would like to see the current resource issue fixed before people come up with ways/reasons for more PQ's to be added to an already overdrawn system (by giving away premium memberships). I know you are working on it, and I trust this will be temporary. I am sorry my point took a bit of a detour.
