  1. I'm not sure what the question really is. I've loaded about 900 MB on a 1 GB card through my 60 CSx, and it is working just fine. I have not tried to reload or change any of the data. I loaded through the GPS since my reader came in a couple days after the card.

I guess what I'm now wondering, is this something that some of us may see when we try to change data sometime down the road.

Rick from what I can see in the German forum it only affects the ULTRA II versions of this card. The standard card works fine. The more expensive ULTRA II card has no advantage in our application anyway.

  2. I have been trying to find the Garmin City Select software on the net and can't find it anywhere besides ebay. Has this software been discontinued? You can buy it as part of a travel pack from OffRoute but on GPS city it says that Garmin has discontinued the software. If so what has replaced it? I see one called Garmin City Navigation is this the same or better? I am wanting to download some maps for my new 60csx. Please help me out here so I buy the right software to start with.

    City Navigator is the replacement.

  3. German Forums are reporting that these cards ([/b]SanDisk ULTRA II[/b]) are unusable after being written in a GPS 60cx or 60CSx. They are no longer readable, cause Windows to crash and can not be formatted. They are also no longer readable in a card reader or under Linux.

The non ULTRA II cards function perfectly.

I stand corrected some members of the German forum are reporting that standard SanDisk 1 GB cards are also dead after being written in a 60Cx or 60Csx. According to the German forum members, the GPS apparently times out and locks up; the GPS can only be restarted by disconnecting the USB cable.

Afterwards the card can no longer be modified.

Can someone confirm that he has fully loaded a 1GB card while it was in the GPS?

  5. As usual there was something small that I didn't know about. I checked the USB box on the GPsr setup page in

GSAK and what do yu know it works like a charm.

Thanks to everyone who sent help and didn't make fun of my ignorance.

I have learned so much in the last two months since I bought my Vista CX. I know I need to learn more and I will.

    thanks again.

Slamming the heel of your hand against your forehead is optional.

  6. Ok, with lots of help from you wonderful people I have downloaded Pocket Querys and saved them to GSAK

I have also sent the waypoints from GSAK to my Palm Zire 21.

Now for another challange. Can you explain why i can't get the waypoints to go to my Vista Cx? I'm using version 6.6 build 50 GSAK . When I try to download to the GPSr I get an error message. Additionally I have used Comm 1 and 3 in the seup but neither works. Can you help me out with this one?

    Thanks

  7. I have a Magellan eXplorist 400 (my first GPS unit and I've only had it a week or two). This unit works in conjunction with the MapSend Topo 3D USA software. However, I've had the National Geographic Topo! software for sometime and have lots of hiking trails in that format (they are readily available for download). My problem is trying to get them from TOPO! to the MapSend and thus to my eXplorist 400. I'm apparently a moron. I can't figure out how to do with GPSBabel and I have been unable to make it work via Excel. I can download the trails (originally in a TPO format of some sort) to a text file, but then the trouble begins. The info is there but I can't cleanly import it into Excel and after spending an inordinate amount of time manipulating the file in Excel Pima Canyon in Tucson, Arizona, turns into a straight tropical transatlantic journey to nowhere. Excel wants to reformat the 32:21:25, -110:56:25 to time or some other calculated sum. MapSend appears to want the data as a "number" but Excel doesn't like it. I've tried "cell format" a number of different ways with no success.

Any help would be appreciated. I'd really like to be able to pull these routes into my GPS unit in a relatively quick and painless way, but so far no go.

Have you tried going to "Data" and then "Text to columns..."?

  8. Ok- I have narrowed down the problem. The Data cable is not the problem, so it's down to the usb/serial converter. I have a made-in taiwan model, that uses 'Prolific Technologies' drivers, which have been installed.

Using Hyperterminal I did the loopback test (wired pin 2 and 3 of RS232-DB9 plug together using a paper clip and started typing in Hyperterminal) but no message came back to the screen.

I have bought two usb/serials from 2 separate companies using different drivers (the other using a 'Semitech HID -> USB' driver, and both have the same effect.

    clueless now...

There are 256 com ports, with only 4 in use now. How do I know which COM port to use?

I recommend that you get a Belkin USB to serial adapter and not a noname. The drivers for the Adapter must be installed BEFORE connecting the Adapter. The Adapter drivers will automatically select a COM Port, usually COM 1-4, they normally cannot choose any Port above this range and this may be your problem. :o

  9. While reading popular science, I came an article about a new GPS-like navigation system called Galileo. The article can be found at http://www.esa.int/esaNA/GGGMX650NDC_index_0.html Has anyone else heard about this? In my opinion, the only improvement over NAVSTAR is the allowed civilian use of the dual-bands.

The Brits are throwing their own GPS system up because they don't like the fact that the US can shut off the existing one whenever they want

It's not the Brits, it's the European Union which I hope you've heard of. The first prototype is in orbit and being tested now.

  10. With a delivered/resale price in the $20-$30 range, there can't be more than a couple dollars of material in such an antenna.

SO... what antenna do you have, and what GPS are you using it with?

Obviously you don't know what's in that blob of of plastic at the end of the cable.

It's NOT just a bit of wire. It's actually a helix antenna followed by a very sophisticated low noise amplifier (that's what the power from the GPS is for).

Actually you should be amazed that they are as cheap as they are.

I have a Gilsson and use it with my Garmin GPS 60cs, and when you connect it you immediately see the difference.

  11. I have an etrex legend and use nroute with metroguide NA on my laptop, but would like to have turn by turn directions on the laptop. I use a seiral to usb adapter and this makes the computer see the USB as a com port. Does anyone know if this setup will work with 2006 streets and trips? Thanks

It should work fine if you select NMEA output from the Legend.

  12. I geocache with an explorist 210 and i own a few garmins for friends who join me; a yellow etrex and an etrex vista. I picked these units because i first used gps when i would hike long distances in the mountains and durability has always been important. more and more though ive been getting into geocaching and would enjoy going paperless (as much as possible). from what i read on the forums most people who go paperless do so with a palm or pocket pc. my question is are these devices durable enough for hikes. my gps units are the most durable electronics i own. ive seen that yellow etrex live through things that just blow me away.

You will find that the biggest problem is the extremely short battery life, most last only about 3 hours with the GPS turned on. Also a lot of them still lose all programs and data when the battery goes flat. You then have to re-install everything. I think they are a PITA. :anicute:
