  1. i'm looking to buy a new GPSr and have noticed all the talk about the new SIRF chip in Garmins. Can anyone confirm that this give better sensistivity "worldwide" i.e. its not related to WAAS which I understand is only available in NA? :anitongue:

My previous GPS was a GPS 60Cs, and I now have a GPS 60CSx. There is a world of difference in the reception quality of the CSx. I have used the CSx in Europe and in the USA and it works fine with no difference in reception. I might add that the GPS Sats are not Geostationary (they move constantly around the Earth) so you should expect no degradation in New Zealand.

  2. Here is a warning. I just got an email back from Garmin. They are saying that the UNLOCK code I used to link my MAPSOURCE MAP CD with my Garmin Legend is now GONE!! If I sell the Garmin Legend. ...Do I have this wrong??

Maybe in part. The unlock code should continue to work for that legend. You can't undo the unlock code for the legend and then use it again on another GPS. You sould need to use the 2nd unlock code that Garmin gives for their software.

I could be wrong as well.

Garmin is very clear in that the unlock code is tied to a single unit. However you can obtain a second NEW FREE unlock code for a second unit if you have the original software.

  3. DUH!! Why didn't you just take the batteries out? No Volts no whine.

    My first thought too

Ok folks. I may be female but I'm not THAT dumb. lol The Garmin Quest does not use regular batteries. Its a built-in battery. And yes, I did think about opening it BUT I wasn't sure if "tampering" with the internal battery like that would have voided my warranty. With some electronic equipment "going where no man is supposed to go" voids the warranty. So to be on the safe side, I elected to leave it as it. I put it in my breakfast room and covered it up so I couldn't hear that earsplitting whine.

I think if I can find a cache, I can figure out to remove batteries IF they are removable.

Ah, but you didn't tell us what model GPSr it was until now. And most GPSrs used for geocaching are handhelds with removable batteries and not automotive GPSrs.

  4. Don't worry...I did call. :D I just emailed first, then I called. I still haven't had a reply to my email sooo...I can't say I'm too happy with that. The service guy I spoke to was ok...he didn't bowl me over with friendly helpfulness but I got the info I needed to ship it back to them.

BUT...I'm very glad to hear such raves on the service. I guess my concern in a situation like this is...the unit has failed once and after only a few months of light use. Once I get it back, if it fails again and is out of warranty, I'm screwed. Its not good when something new breaks. Its a different matter after you've had something that has served you well for a couple of years.

What exactly is the problem with the unit? We may have discussed it here in the past and may be able to offer a solution without you having to send it back...

I was out caching and I looked down at the screen to select the next cache and the screen looked smeared or skewed. So I cut it off and then powered it back up. The screen remained blank and it started emitting a high pitched whine. WHICH WOULD NOT STOP. It was terrible! I tried everything to get it to stop. Nothing worked. It was probably killing my poor dog's ears. So I had to head back home. I tried covering it up with a jacket to dull the sound. It whined the rest of the day and night. Finally the next morning the noise had stopped. It would power on but then cut off after a few seconds. BTW, it was fully charged and its a Garmin Quest.

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it. I really miss having it. :P This will be my third cache-less weekend coming up.

DUH!! Why didn't you just take the batteries out? No Volts no whine.

  5. If you download the previous firmware versions to your PC, you can always go back to an earlier version in about 5 minutes if problems arise.

That is not the issue, the issue is in case of problems while downloading, you may end up with a dead GPS, will not start or be able to download again and you will have to send it back to Garmin to fix !

One of the changes in the latest version of Webupdater is to NOT start updating before verifying that the update is completely downloaded as I recall.

Also it appears many have problems because they disconnect the GPS when Webupdater is apparently finished instead of waiting for the GPS to do a restart.

  6. First of all, I'm pretty new to the world of GPS, so bear with me. I just got a 60cx and I'm having problems connecting it to the computer. I plug the usb cord in and turn the unit on. The computer recognizes it but says there was a problem during installation. Any ideas?

Also, is there a *ahem* less expensive way to get City Navigator onto my GPS?

    Thanks!

You must have the Garmin USB Drivers loaded.

No there is no way as you need a legal activation code which you have to purchase. And the forum does not support or advocate software piracy.

  7. We, too, took the plunge to a 60Cx. Does anyone know what happened to the GPS screen protector guys that used to have an ad on the Geocaching web site? Or who they were? Or if any of the other protectors that come multi in a pad are any good. The protector we have on the 60C is great and they make good gifts at the Christmas events. Just need to find those guys :(

They're having a sale. I have no connection with them other than being a satisfied customer.

I have used the clear table cloth plastic material you can buy for little money at a fabric store, I cut to the shape of whatever i am covering then dampen and position, works well!!

I got a lifetime supply from the Wally-Mart fabric department for about $2.00. :(

  8. Hi,

I just updated my 60Cx to software 3.00 and gps 2.90. Now when I am moving along with the map page showing, the map jumps around by 30-45 degrees every few seconds, as if it's hunting for my location. My track is correct (I can reverse my route and it tracks perfectly along the path I took on the map). It's just the direction jumping around that is annoying.

Has this happend to anyone else?

Is there a way to roll back the software?

    Thanks.

    Do a reset.

  9. Hello all. I don't know if I have this posted to the correct form or not, so my apologies in advance if that is the case. I found a GPS on amazon.com that I am interested in. The Amazon Canada site does not have the particular GPS. My question is this (or are these). First of all, can you buy through amazon using Paypal. Will they ship to Canada. Does it have to be on credit card. And can a Canadian apply for their credit card for the $30 discount. Thanks.

Duh. I think you should send an eMail to Amazon USA. <_<

  10. Hi Gang,

I'm upgrading to a Garmin 60cx. Along with it I purchased the City Select North America maps.

I'm not really sure how the key codes work.

My understanding is that you can use 2 GPSr with each map set, is this correct?

My question. I want to be able to work on the GPS/Map items both at work and at home.

Can I do that with this program? I would think as long as it is the original GPS that the key code was for I should be ok.

Or does putting the program on another computer cause problems.

I hope this is clear enough

    Thanks

As far as I know, it will work fine as long as you install with the same GPSr. You will need only one code as the key code is tied to the GPS.

  11. Don't forget about the $50 rebate Garmin is offering for the 60 series and etrex series units. You can find it on their website.

Garmin ripped me off on the $75 rebate I was due. I wouldn't trust 'em.

I'll never own anotehr Garmin product.

How did they rip you off?

Sent in all the forms, barcode, etc. (Complete with photo-copy of all contents). I never got the rebate, and none of their Customer No-Service rats would help via phone, snail mail, or email.

I sent my rebate documentation registered and that helped a lot.
