  1. I assume this only includes coins that are actually sitting in a cache at the moment. Mine is out there, but was grabbed by someone on the 20th, so it doesn't appear to be included. It was last seen in Ontario though. Scott
  2. Hehe, who does this little squid belong to??? Scott
  3. I have two scheduled PQs. One for Friday to Monday, and the other for Friday and Monday. Neither have sent anything to me for at least 6 days. If I copy them, the copy runs within a couple of hours and I receive the PQ. Scott
  4. I don't know if any telescopic aluminum poles will hold up to a wooden stick. Then again, I don't have any others to compare to. I'm sure I could break this if I leaned on it hard at an angle. Especially the more it's extended. Would it break my fall? I don't think so. I'm 6'3", 240lbs. I guess it would also depend on how I used it to break my fall. I brought our bathroom scale down for a test. I extended the pole to around walking cane length so I could lean straight down on it. I gradually increased the weight on it to see when and if the pole connections would slip. Assuming that my bathroom scale is accurate, I put about 80lbs of downward force on it without any slippage. I'd be surprised if it didn't slip at 100lbs though, but I didn't feel like testing that theory. I still haven't tested it out on a hike, but I'm looking forward to it. Maybe this weekend. For my purposes -- helping to keep my balance going up or down a steep hill, walking over fallen trees and logs, and poking into dark places, I think it'll do. If not, the $22 didn't kill me and I'll look for a wooden stick/staff. I really like portability though. Scott
  5. Writing logs is half the fun for me, whether they are finds of dnfs. Scott
  6. Thank you, Woodbutcher68! I have one ordered and will stop back here and let everyone know what I think of the quality! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thanks, all! Thanks to Woodbutcher68, I stopped by Lee Valley this afternoon and picked one up. I've been looking for an inexpensive hiking stick for a while, and this fit the bill. Seems to be pretty sturdy. Haven't had a chance to try it out in the field yet. Scott
  7. And here's there article, published last Thursday: http://www.ottawasun.com/Lifestyle/2006/06...658955-sun.html Scott
  8. Welcome back to the addiction! Is this the newsgroup you're looking for? http://www.digitalexposure.ca/forum/index.php There was a GAG8 event at the end of April, and I think there's going to be another in the Fall. Scott
  9. Nice card. Nice avatar. Nice name. Twister65 (aka Scott)
  10. Logging my finds (and DNFs) is a big part of why I enjoy Geocaching. Although I don't always have a lot to say in my logs, I don't think I've ever written a 1 or 2 liner. Every cache I've found has been an interesting little adventure in its own way. Scott
  11. As others have mentioned, call them. I got tired of week-long waits for a canned response asking me for info that I had already sent. So I called them one day during my lunch hour at work. I got their Customer Service fairly quickly, explained the situation and she transferred me to their tech support for the RA #. The tech was a little difficult to understand and I had to literally spell every part of my address to him. Once he realized I was in Canada, he had to put me on hold to get me the warranty repair contact info for Canada. He came back with a phone number of an electronics repair place here in Ontario to call. Not including the weekend, it took about 3 days from shipping my eXplorist 200 to them, to receiving it back at my door (unit replaced). I love both of my eXplorists, but the hassles of dealing directling with Magellan/Thales left a bitter taste in my mouth and I'll give a serious look at Garmin the next time. Scott
  12. If this is the case, you might want to post this in the Geocaching.com website section of the forum. Not sure if Jeremy & Co can or will do anything about this since the problem concerns a beta release of GE. But they should probably know about this potential bug. Thanks for the heads-up; I'll be holding off on trying out the new version. Done! I was thinking this morning that I might switch back to the older version as well. I like the cleaner look of the new version, but I need the right icons. Scott
  13. As mentioned in a thread in the Hardware & Software forum.... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...dpost&p=2276601 The Geocaching KML file doesn't work well with the new Google Earth 4 beta. The icons for the caches all display as the default pin icon, rather than the specific geocaching icon for the cache type. Scott
  14. I just downloaded it. It's not bad. Has a cleaner look. Haven't dug into it much yet. The first thing I noticed is that the Geocaching kml file only partially works with it. It'll display the caches, but not the specific icon for the cache type. Scott
  15. I'm reminded of a time that I watched the drama that unfolded at the airport because a child packed a fake grenade in his checked luggage. As it went through the x-ray machine, the TSA screener got rather pale. He then called over his supervisor who then called the airline's ground security and airport police. The entire ordeal took about 45 minutes and the child very nearly got arrested. This reminded me of when I was a young lad, back in the mid-70's. My Mother, sister and I were catching a flight from Montreal to the UK (heading to Scotland). As we rushed through the airport, my metal lunch box containing some toys I wanted to bring with me (cardboard cutouts, toy cars, and a metal snub-nosed revolver cap pistol - I kid you not) sprung open as we were on one of those conveyor walkways, spilling the entire contents onto the conveyor. We gather it all up and then made our way through security and onto the plane. I had the same metal lunchbox with the same contents coming back. I was too young to remember if my Mother was questioned about it, but the lunchbox did go through the x-ray both times, and I still had the cap gun when we arrived home. Scott

  17. I didn't my scheduled one for yesterday or today so far. I ended up making a copy of it and it ran right away. Scott
  18. I read your other thread... do you think even if I didn't live in Canada, Bill's would fix it for me? Thank you for your reply, Sue As a warranty repair? I don't know, but I don't think so. You could always try calling them and ask, but I think one hurdle might be with Bill's Electronics getting authorization from Magellan to do the repair under warranty. The number I have for them is 1-519-367-2771. Scott

  20. See my reply here in another thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...dpost&p=2265493 I don't know what happened to my display. Sounds similar to what you're seeing though. Do you see the LCD pixels even when it's turned off? I did on mine. Although I didn't notice any cracks inside. It might have been water that got inside, or it might have gotten knocked by my daughter when she was carrying it, I really don't know -- but Magellan fixed it under warranty. I just explained that the display was no longer working after a day of Geocaching. They didn't question it. Scott
  21. I have mixed opinions of Megellan's tech support. About a month ago, I went Geocaching with my kids. I have two GPSrs, an eXplorist 600 and 200. My kids were in charge of the 200, and it hung from a lanyard around whichever one of them was carrying it. It was a damp day, with rain on and off. After our last find, I took the 200 from my daughter to put away in my backpack. As I was about to turn it off, I noticed that the display didn't look right. About 80% of it was "solid black". At first I thought that perhaps water got in it, so I removed the batteries and put it away. The next day, I took it out and popped a fresh set of batteries into it and turned it on. Still on the fritz. I sent Magellan an email via their web page, asking if it sounded like something I would have to send it in for warranty repair for. I waited 1 week before I got a reply. The reply stated that it would need repairs, and to send them shipping info, along with the serial number, etc. to get an RA number to ship it back for repairs. I replied to their email and minutes later it bounced back as undeliverable. I went back to their web site and filled out the forum, this time choosing some option to obtain the "RA" number. I specifically asked for an RA number. Again, 1 week later I got a reply. It said pretty much the same thing as the first. That it needed repairs, send them the following info, yada yada yada. So, I sent it AGAIN. Just over 1 week went by and no reply. I called them during my lunch on June 1st. 5-10 minutes later, I was speaking with a woman who asked how she could help me. I told her that I was calling for an RA number. I explained the whole email ordeal. She told me that she would transfer me to their tech support, who could authorize the return for repair. I explained the problem to the tech and he agreed that it sounded like it needed repair . He started to process it for an RA until he found out I was from Canada. He then said I would have to send it to somewhere in Canada for repair, and asked if he could put me on hold for a minute. A few minutes later he returned and gave me a phone number for an "authorized repair depot" in Ontario. He said if I called them, explained the situation, they could help me. He gave me a case number, I thanked him and hung up. Before calling this new number, I Googled it and found that it belonged to "Bill's Electronics", in Mildmay Ontario. I even found an old thread on here saying that Bill's was great for warranty repair. I called the number and got a recorded message. On the recorded message it said that if I was calling for repairs on Magellen's GPSrs to ship it to them along with a note explaining the problem. So that's what I did. Although Bill's recording didn't ask for the receipt, I made sure to include it (2 weeks under a year old!) I mailed it on June 2nd, but missed the last pick up so it sat at the post office for the weekend. It went out on June 5th. Arrived at Bill's Electronics on June 6th. Was back at my door on June 7th (today!) The service order in the box said: Problem: Defective display. Action Taken: Replace unit. And that's what they did. Looks new. Might be a refurb, but it has the protective plastic over the display. Smells new too. Boo to Magellan for making me jump through hoops. Kudos to Bill's Electronics! Scott

    Gps Advice

If you don't mind ordering online, GPSCentral.ca has the eXplorist 210 for around $195 Cdn, plus there's an additional $30USD rebate until July. The only drawback may be waiting months (literally) for the rebate. I had a $50 USD rebate on my eXplorist 500, mailed it in Jan, and just received it at the end of May. Scott
  23. Same here. Haven't received a scheduled one since May 31st. Scott
  24. Hi Alex, If you create an account at http://www.geocaching.com and then log in with it, you'll find a "Log your visit" at the top right corner of the individual cache's page. Good luck with your story -- I look forward to reading it! Scott
  25. You can search by Canadian ZIP codes (also known as Postal Codes to us crazy Canucks). Make sure you put a space between the first three and last three characters. For example: P0B 1J0 Scott
