  4. I use it and I think it's a great unit ! It has no negative points IMO, except for the touch screen which might be a hassel sometimes. Its quite easy to fill in a wrong coord when not payinhg attention. The solution is using a pen when entering coords to tap the screen. I would never buy me a unit which has only the joystick button. Looks like a pain in the *** to enter coords like that ...
  5. Thanks for the quick reply. After a quick look Ive noticed that the Etrex 10 20 and 30 are indeed the newer garmin models. When I need visual maps on it, I would need to buy a 20 or 30 model. If I only want the compass I go for the 10. The thing is however, The Etrex H will only cost me 80 bucks, while a Etrex 10 is about 200 dollars. Is it worth the enormous price diff to pick the new 10-model over the older H-model. I don't see alot of difference in terms of specifications ....
  6. Hey everybody, I'm a relatively new geocacher, and i've been using my smartphone to do so until now. I do want to be able to perform some longer days of caching, which is hard with my phone. So I was looking for some lower-cost gps units and my eye spotted the Garmin Etrex-series, ranging from the cheaper etrex H to the slightly more expensive Vista/Legend-series. From what I see now, the only benefit the Vista/Legend-series provide is that they can hold more waypoints, have a USB-cable and are being able to show maps when provided/bought. As eventually, I'd like to be able to completely ditch my cellphone to go geacaching, I will porbably need a device which also has the possibility of showing maps etc, since only a compass will lead me to take wrong roads and detours i do not wish to make. I guess that makes the H-version not useful to me. This leaves me with the following choice : Vista or Legend. Both have the same price but the vista-model comes with a Europe map. My questions to you guys are : - Can both vista and Legend models show you the directions from cache to cache on a map ? Which models of GPSr's support a great (visual) routeplanner between caches or has the possibility of uploading this through for example mapsource ? - Is the europe-map that is provided with the vista-model a basic model which will only be able to show the big roads ? I'm from Belgium and only plan to geocache in Belgium at this point, so I will need a map from here. - Is it possible to use free maps on the garmin devices, for example those from openstreetmaps ? - What do you think about the price difference and what would you choose in my place ? (Etrex H : 80 dollar ; Etrex Vista & Etrex Legend : 170 dollar ) Thanks in advance guys !
  7. Hey everybody, I'm kind of new to the entire geocaching experience and I must say this could become a real passion ! I've done 13 caches right now, which I've all found using my android-based Garmin Asus Nuvifone A10. I like to do things perfect from the start, so I'm working on my equipment right now. Since I have never geocached using a regular GPS device, I was wondering if anyone had actually compared the usage of a smartphone with integrated GPS-module vs GPS. My thought, based on research I've done until now, says that each GPS always has some error margin, depending on day time, atmosphere, weather etc. The more expensive and better the gps-module, the better the GPS could be in maintaining strong signal and keep it's functioning up in more difficult circumstances like caching in dense forests etc. My questions are the following : - Does anyone have experience with Garmin-Asus phones ? I'd say that because it's a garmin phone, their gps-modules that have been integrated into their smartphones, could be better than the average Iphone, HTC, Samsung etc. GPS module. Anyone has some information if this could be a right assumption ? (My GPS-module is a Qualcomm GPSOne G7 type, but i don't find any information about it relevant to my question) - Secondly, suppose a regular GPS device would offer better reception and improved accuracy, thus being worth the buy : Would downgrading from the ease of geocaching with the official geocaching app (thus paperless, no manual waypoints etc) nonetheless feel like an enormous downgrade when buying a more cheap GPs device like the Garmin eTrex H ? I'm thinking an improved battery-life, better accuracy and/or reception is all fun, but when you need to enter waypoints manually and ose alot of functionality, this makes the choice a bit harder to me ... Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this. I apologise if this should be in the GPS-section, but I thought it would be more relevant in the Getting Started section since it actually IS about me getting started
