Has anyone had an issue with their PM account not autorenewing? About a week ago, I received an auto-renew notice from Groundspeak, as I have for the last number of years. My account should have renewed today. Unfortunately, when I logged in this morning, I noticed that my account was not renewed and that I'm back to a basic member.
I did not receive any e-mail indicating that there was a problem with the renewal. Last year, my account was debited on 11/2.)
I've e-mailed Groundspeak and am waiting for an answer. In the mean time, I looked around the site to see if there is anywhere to confirm the details of the credit card on file, and couldn't find any. I'm thinking that I need to update the expiration date of the card, perhaps. Maybe I'm not seeing this because I'm now a basic member?
Of course, all my bookmarks and PQs are gone. Think they'll reinstate them? I could renew manually, but I don't want to get double billed, and would like GS to realize the error so I can hopefully get my bookmarks and PQs back.

Mark a waypoint for your current position and then edit it to reflect where you want to go.

so... When I get to Hawaii, will they appear then?
Thanks for your help!!!

You can do a couple things to check.
1 - Zoom your map out and then zoom in on the island(s) you'll be on. You should see the caches on the map.
or
2 - Do you have an option to search for caches by name? There is probably something like "ABC" at the bottom of the cache list that allows you to do this. I don't have your model GPS, but they're all similar. Select that option and then enter the first few letters of the cache.

Instead of using "Send to GPS", why don't you make Pocket Queries containing collections of caches? It is really the better way to manage caches on your GPS. Just copy the .gpx file from the PQ to the \Garmin\GPX folder on either the unit or the storage card.
-
Go HERE. Browse to the geocache_visits.txt file on your GPS and then upload. You can then look at each of your notes, edit them if necessary, and then post them to your account.

I am getting a Dakota 20 soon, and wondering what program to use when loading caches on to the gps. What one do you guys use and prefer?
On a PC, Windows Explorer and Finder, on a Mac. You don't need to do anything except unzip the downloaded POcket Queries, if that's what you have to load up to the gps.
Once you have the .gpx unzipped from your Pocket Query, copy it directly to the \Garmin\GPX folder on the GPS.
This will give you everything you need to get started . . . description, hints, 5 logs, etc. After you get comfortable with this, you can use GSAK to tweak your .gpx files before loading them to the GPS. (You can combine .gpx files, rename caches, and a lot of other stuff.) This is totally optional, though. Simply copying the .gpx directly to the GPS works just fine.

Have you looked in the GPS Garage Sale forum?

Sorry, if I seem a little slow and this may seem like a silly question but what do you mean by paperless geocaching?
With a paperless geocaching GPS, the cache description, hint and recent logs are also copied to the GPS. This way, you don't have to print out the cache pages. Additionally, using the GPS, you can enter a log entry, which you can later upload to geocaching.com and then post. These units also facilitate the quick loading of a number of caches at one time by aggregating the caches in a Pocket Query, which is then copied to the GPS.

Is it just me or do others find the Zagg material "stickier" than you'd like?
I have a Zagg on my Oregon. I agree with you, it's more "sticky" than I'd like. Mine also seems slightly tinted when the unit is turned on.
I've gone through a number of different manufacturers' protectors on various devices, and my new favorite is Ghost Armor. I don't dislike the Zagg on my Oregon enough to bother changing it, though.

Are Premium members meant to receive a reminder email when their sub runs out? I didn't and I didn't realise I had been playing the game for a year until I couldn't find my Bookmarks, PQs, etc one evening.
I get one 14 days before expiration, but I am on auto-renew. The e-mail also advises that your credit card will be billed. I don't know what you get if you are not on auto-renew.

I was hoping the answer was yes, that way I could see the actual map without buying ExpertGPS (which I so desperately want, but the ol' lady says it's not in the budget).
I wonder if my efforts are futile..I've gone through every menu about 400 times in EasyGPS to try to hide them and there is no such option. I guess I could edit all of them to have no names but like a post said above, how would I know what they were...
Sorry. About the only thing I can think of is put the two side by side. Use the de-cluttered Google Maps to figure out your route since you can see the roads, then plot the route in Easy GPS.

This isn't a direct answer to your question . . . just a suggestion.
Wouldn't it be easier to plan routes using either Google Earth or Google Maps? You can import a .gpx directly into Google Earth. If you'd rather use Google Maps, right click the imported .gpx in Google Earth and save it as a .kml. The .kml can then be imported into Google Maps. With Google Maps, you'll get icons without the name tags.
I suppose, but would the route be usable on my Garmin Venture HC? When I make them in EasyGPS I can go to Routes on the GPSr and go from cache to cache in a pre-determined order via the route itself.
I see what you're doing now. With my suggestion I don't think you could create a route in Google Maps easily, if at all.

1) Can the SD card be backed up in the event the card fails?
1 no
You can back the card up by making a copy of the files on it. The problem is that the files are locked to the card. You can't copy those files back to another piece of media should it fail.
What you MIGHT be able to do though, in the event of a failure, is copy the backed up files back to the SAME card. I'm just guessing here, though, as I've never tried it. Someone else here might be able to comment on this.
Obviously, if it works, this will only recover from a file corruption on the card. If the card itself takes a dive, your backup is of no value.

i am not very computer savy just purchased a dakota 20 is there something i need to download to be able to download caches from geo website to the gps
One you are logged onto the official Geocaching web site:
Turn on your Dakota 20
Connect to pc/laptop via USB
Go to geocaches, either list or google maps
Select and click your intended geocache (one at a time will be needed to be accomplished)
Click send to my gps
It will take a second but then will ask permission to "write to device"
Allow it to do so then it will be in the Dakota geocaching menu for selection

I agree with EC, load your caches through a Pocket Query, not as described above. They'll both work, but you see why you want the pocket query method when you go to delete your found caches. With ldvictor's method, you'll need to go to the same place EC pointed out the pocket queries should be copied to, and delete them one at a time. If you geocache a regularly, it's a lot of work doing it that way.

That might be a bit tough for backpacking. AFAIK, Pocket PCs generally don't have GPSs, requiring an external one. That's going to be a real drain on the batteries.
-
The gpx files are in an xml format, but the hint fields are encode using a very simple code . . .
That's true for the web site . . . the hints are obscured using ROT13.
However, in a downloaded .gpx file, the hint is not obscured, it is in plain text.
For example:
<Groundspeak:encoded_hints>between</Groundspeak:encoded_hints>

I'd call Garmin tech support. Interrupting a firmware upgrade of any device is generally fatal, at least in terms of anything you can do. Hopefully they'll have some way of flashing a new firmware over your incomplete flash to solve the problem. You might have to send it in.
-
That might be true for A-GPS, which is a technique to help the GPS lock more quickly, but that doesn't mean the phone's GPS won't get a lock without it. There is a difference between keeping A-GPS information from applications and locking out the GPS.
I've had several Verizon smartphones in the last few years . . . xv6800, Samsung Omnia, Touch Pro 2. The GPS works with 3rd party apps for all of them. I'm currently using a TouchPro 2 (Windows) phone with a geocaching app that finds my location using the GPS just fine.
-
There's no way to "hack" the VZW 8330 to use GPS with 3rd party apps. Sorry.
It doesn't take a hack. According to the BGR report, below, and numerous other posts, a Verizon maintenance release opened the GPS up to other applications:

VZW BlackBerry 8330 GPS is blocked (except for VZ Nav and BlackBerry Maps). You need to upgrade to 9630, Storm or newer to be able to use GPS with 3rd party apps.
I am sure there is a way to hack that to unlock the GPS. There is for just about any phone. Do some googleing...
Nope. There isn't.
The 8330 has been unlocked since December, 08, so long as you've upgraded to 4.5.
Verizon hasn't locked their GPS's down for several years now. If you still got one of those, it's really old. The last smartphone Verizon had locked down was the xv6800 (Windows), which they unlocked with MR2.

What phone are you using?
Blackberry Curve
I use a Windows phone, so I'm not overly familiar with these, but here are a couple suggestions:
Blackstar - free - http://www.blackstarnavigation.com/
Trimble GeoNavigator - This is fee based.
Plus, a simple search for "Blackberry" in this forum yields a lot of information, including THIS THREAD.

don't use easyGPS, it messes up the GPX files. use pocket queries instead and just copy the vanilla GPX files onto the unit. or use GSAK or something else.
Agreed. As a Premium Member, you should create pocket queries that group your caches into .gpx files. Copy those .gpx files in \Garmin\GPX on your GPS.
