  1. I don't even get a star on a map..... **sniff** if this is it..then I have to say I am done geocaching unless I buy a new computor or something (???) Please mods..jump in and tell us this is still being adjusted. I too vote for the old way back...or a way for some of us to access the old way...
  2. I don't see ANY maps on my pages..can someone figure THAT out for me?? I get a message that the maps are not compatable with my browser. yes..we have an old computor and only have dial-up available..so how do I fix this do do some serious caching that I was planning asap? Kinda the pits since I just got my premium upgrade last week.... the "old way" worked just fine here..sometimes I wish when things weren't broken nobody would try to fix them....
  3. I/we have hidden 5 so far, and in everyone we leave a $2 bill inside the logbook as a ftf prize.
  4. the worst I have ever been to was a dumpster behind a chicken restaurant...where they store their used grease...gag me. didn't realize ahaed of time it was somewhere like that, as the town was a very historical one, and thought it might be someplace neat. When I got out of my car, amazed, and realized that yes, my gps was pointing here, I just got back in my car a drove away. Even though I was >this< close, it wasn't worth my time to even add another smiley to my record.
  5. I got a mere one benchmark yesterday...better then nothing I guess, since the cars not running right, and I hate to stray too far.
  6. thanks for the suggestions..I'll look though them, but I really think its a computor problem. I used to be able to post them, no problem, in fact was a big e-bay seller, BUT my computor is 8 years old, and dying fast (it will literally shut off when I am using it.) ad in the dial-up and its a dead horse here...lol. I also had to buy a new camera, because a monster wave chased me down and threw me up on the beach on vacation in october, with my digital camera in hand...and the new camera I got (same brand just updated) has never worked right on this computor...the most/newest I can run atm is windows 98..so what's that tell ya?? lol I think if I even download anything new its going to blow up... Income tax time is coming, and with it a new computor...and THEN I am sure I will be able to post pictures!
  7. thanks for the info and help everyone. I did figure out after reading more today that it is the rod that is the marker in the ones I found...so I logged them as finds. I did take pics of the covers, but they wouldn't upload due to slow computor and even slower dial-up (can't get anything else here atm) I get "timed out" waiting, so I give up trying anymore. If I would find any incredibly differant or something I felt I really really should or want to post, I can e-mail it out to my brother and give him my password and he can slap a pic in for me. As for now I am just happy to be back on the track with my gps..I found all the caches in this area, and then some, and was having a hard time getting a cache fix with daylight ending so early...so this will give the ole soccer mom something to do until we are on the move this spring and summer.
  8. Okay..I think I'm getting it..in fact I found two this morning...and I went for ones that no one found instead of going for the common ones around here that have alot of finds to them...so I am patting myself on the back a little. BUT..the ones I found had "access covers" and I snuck them opened and there is a stick in an approx 3 foot hole, and its filled with water (both were the same type)..I am assuming the actual plate is down there...but this is still a "find" right? and I can see where no gps cords are necessary for these one...they were right exactly where the written directions said they should be. A third one was, I think, under a new sidewalk. There was a suspicious plastic "vent" in the sidewalk that I bet it got put under...and since it was in the middle of town, in the bank yard, on their personnel sidewalk, and 3 feet from the building, I didn't think I should try to pry that up and see what was under it...lol
  9. Lighthouses are fairly constant structures (with the exception of Hatteras, which was moved 1,500 feet--grin). *********** Hatteras is one we climbed about ten weeks ago, the last day it was opened for the season (is that retro??) and we also climbed it about 13 years ago where it used to be (okay..that is retro) and I can't post any pictures until I get a new computor...this one is dying, and I get timed out before my pictures get uploaded on the geocaching site. (also can only get dial-up where we live, so that doesn't help the uploading process either) so what am I supposed to be measuring when I find these things??? the "too reach" something ?? Its not explained real well on the geocaching site..just to find them. and how do I know if I have the right one if there are a few in the area...will numbers match up? (I know one place I was at in RI there were multiple ones with a few feet of each other) and if I find one that has cords that aren't accurate, should I post the cords that I took while there? or is that making it too easy/spoiling it for the next person
  10. Okay...I've always been a lighthouse nut, then got into geocaching, which works out nice, since there is always something close to the lighthouse, but now I am looking into benchmarks (man do I have alot to learn there!!) and realize that some of the lighthouse we have been at, some actually climbed, are benchmarks. Do I get to claim them even though when I climbed them I didn't know it was considered a benchmark? Do I have to climb way up there again? (hard to love lighthouses when you have an accute fear of heights..lol) I've been reading alot of stuff here and at geocaching about benchmarks..and learned all kinds of big new words today....
  11. a region I totally LOVE is the Oil City/ Franklin area....rich in history, be it Indians, river, Oil (Titusville is very close!!) or otherwise. Lots of river views..overlooks, biketrails, waterfalls, etc etc. LOts of variety on caches too....easy...even a afew WAlmarat ones...or hard to get to!!
  12. Howdy all you geocachers out there in cyberspace!! I have a problem that you might be able to help me with. we are traveling from PA to the beautiful Outer Banks this weekend, and had planned to come down Rt 17, skirt around the VA Beach area, and then onto the Banks by way of the bridge ABOVE Kitty Hawk. Now someone today asked/told me that that bridge isn't opened...or rather it wasn't a few years back when they were there last, and had heard that it still isn't opened, and the only way across to the Outer Banks area is across the bridge BELOW Kitty Hawk (across Manteo area etc) I am hoping someone local around here can tell me asap, so we can get our route planned (and I can figure which day we are hitting which caches...lol), because if we CAN"T cross between Kitty Hawk & Duck(sorry, I don't know the bridge names), then we might need to reroute us down anothe way instead of 17. (probably 95, then across 64) Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.
  13. HEY!! that was me on the TV!! lol Great story...and ya even made me look good Dave!! Thanks for the chance to be a star!! (and meet another Geocahcer!)
  14. Heading that way on Friday after the kids are out of school. going to be a close time-line, with maybe a stop at Horseshoe curve, to eat...yeah, eat...thats why we'll stop there(has nothing to do with the cache there or the penny press in the gift shop....) is there any close, possibly in the parking lot of the curves stadium? or maybe a quick one or two down rt 36? don't have alot of time to search through, so I thought maybe someone could clue me in if they are in the area, or have been there done that. thanks in advance
  15. HI Peachy! heard you made the news the a few weeks back..I missed it though...was at soccer practice..maybe we will meet up sometime....
  16. thanks all! I will look into getting numbers for them...between the two guys and others that I'm sure will jump at doing something fun, they should be able to engrave them right there at work.
  17. my husband works in powdered metal, and is getting another guy into geocaching. Well, between these two, they can design and mold their own coins out of about any kind of powdered metal they want. And they want to do it. BUT...what are the requirements/restrictions on coin making, and how would they do the tracking numbers? They thought of selling them for a non-profit group. (I suggested that they could sell them and buy gps units for the local elementary schools to use in teaching.)
  18. would it help anyone that is traveling across I-80 in Ohio to have the cords to various service centers to look for quick rest stop cache and dashes? on the way by most of them, I hit "mark cords" on the gps, so the next time we go that way, it will be easier to see which stops have hides there. If anyone thinks it might make things easier, I can post the cords I have, and approx where they are. let me know, and I will start typing.....
  19. Got the one at Cabella! thanks! we even had a half hour to play inside before they threw us out..lol. printed out the ones alone RT 23, sure we will be back that way again...makes it easier to get a few cords from someone close, then to try and sort though 1000 caches within 100 miles of a zip code!
  20. and I'm looking for a "cache and dash" in OH just to say we did one there too
  21. Jefferson County PA here..but have cached in KY (1), RI (4) and hitting MI (going for many many this time!!) this coming weekend.
  22. we're heading from PA to the Detroit area for the Easter weekend, and on our way by Cabellas we have to stop and return a defective trail camera. We will be getting there with only enough time to get in and out before closing, BUT....you know this addiction...is there any caches close that we can grab while in the area and stopped? I love the bears outside the store, and wonder if there is anything close or in the parking lot. I did a search with the zip code, and it says over 3000 in a 100 mile radius, but since I am not from the area am struggling to figure out where anything is. any help will be appreciated. tia
  23. As for the coordinates, check what format your GPS is set for. Once loaded the caches will be displayed by cache name in alphabetical order, and by default the cache name will be the ID from geocaching.com. *********************** my cords are differant even before they go into my gps. they are differant in my "easygps file" on my desktop straight from geocaching. THEN I put them into my gps, and they were the ones that were wrong...but match what is in my file.
  24. I think easyGPS or GSAK will work with that model. GSAK (geocaching swiss army knife) is, as the name implies, aimed at geocaching while easyGPS allows basic functionality such as downloading/uploading waypoints, tracks, etc. easyGPS is free, GSAK is low-cost/shareware but you can try it out for free. okay..downloaded the easygps, and am upand running right NOW...(lol) but I clicked all my boxes of waypoints I want downloaded, and when I do download them they are coming up as differant cords then what is actually on the cache page. whats up with that? and they are not coming in the order that I clicked them...I have them arranged 1-10 how I want to find them, and when they show on my easygps file they are all mixed into a differant order...is that just the way it does it or am I still lost somewhere?
  25. I have the yellow garim too, and just bought a PC INTERFACE CABLE from Cabella....it seems to hook to the back of my computor (screws on) and then hooks to the top of my gps.....so what else do I need to download these cords? I was hoping to do it tonight for tomorrow...but since we seem to have lost the Garmin instruction book, we are muddling through.
