  1. could try putting together an event and from there see who's interested in forming a group.
  2. have only a few ftf-none of them with a ftf prize that I recall. our favorite ftf was a cache for dogs (our best friends). zoie took forever finding the toy she wanted. she took a purple squeeky monster. I didn't have a trade item so we had to make a return trip. well, this started the process over again. she found the toy of her dreams. a red heartguard sqeeky bone (if anyone knows where I can get a replacement-let me know). had to trade 2 toys so she could have the bone (dogs are worse then kids!). that was prob. 2 yrs ago? she still has the bone and loves it! she carries it everywhere and cries when she can't find it. so that has been our very best ftf prize ever. for my caches, most of the time there's no ftf prize. I did a last to find prize which was a dvd movie. have a canoe cache that had an unactivated geocoin as ftf prize. sometimes will put an unactivated travel bug tag as prize. depends on where the cache is and how much work to get to it. I think gas cards would make great ftf prizes!!!
  3. not sure but this quite an old thread. two years later not much different. this group still has events-some that push buttons. if you're from the area then you'll know the annimosity that exists. what appears at face value to be poking fun is much more around these parts. all I can say is carma-what comes around goes around!! may already be happening and they don't know it!!!
  4. on caches I own-if bugs are sitting there for months-I try and go get them to move along. pretty much is only an issue at winter time when there's less people out caching.
  5. very nice. can't wait to get mine!
  6. possible ice breaker-people bingo. basically, you go around and get one name per square on a bingo card. you'll need a 5x5 grid and then put some caching related or event related questions on the squares. the cacher has to be able to answer yes to the question. some example questions: this is my first event, cached in 5 or more states, etc, etc. be creative. last time we did this was a ducky themed event so one question was can sing rubber ducky-you're the one (let's hear it!). was very funny and entertaining! one thing we've done at every event so far is go around the room and introduce ourselves. really nice to be able to put names with faces. good luck with your event!! if you plan it-they will come. I also prefer pot luck for food. I use to post what people were bringing-but have gone to whatever there is what you'll eat! so far the most popular event for our area is the quaker steak and lube in sharon, pa. simple events are good. cache, food, conversation. I like themes and most all my events have a theme and maybe related challenge or fun game to play. last event was a rubber ducky race down the waterway and we had a duck piñata, which I think the adults liked more then the kids. event before that one was disc golf scramble at our local state park. sometimes they'll give you a shelter to use. we usually find a grove of tables and call it our own so there's no fee. the parks are great places for events. esp. when they have free things available like a disc golf course or beach, etc. at any rate, have fun with your event!!
  7. East Butler, PA 1 mile - 7 5 miles - 27 10 miles - 50 25 miles - 494 50 miles - 2319
  8. there's a pic. of a cache south of my area (assuming pittsburgh area) that has a snake all curled up with it. guess they didn't use snake away?? maybe they did and it attracted the snake! anyway, doesn't sound like a good idea to be using products to deter wildlife. it's their home and they're nice enough to let us play. so far this year I haven't used any bug spray. ticks are bad-so using deet would just keep them in their home and not traveling to our homes!
  9. have found quite a few yard caches. still feel awkward on someone's property-even if I know them. the only cache I hid on my property was temp caches for a nearby event. I have too many perm. caches around that the 500ft rule wouldn't allow me a cache at my house. I really don't want one there anyway-nothing historic or neat about my house!! just a cat or two that'll stare at ya.
  10. never seen this type of hide then again most of our phone booths don't have phone books with them anymore. you're lucky to find the phone and even more lucky if it works. thought about something where you found a number as suggested above but decided against it. as others said-many people will find it. don't know if it'll start a trend or not. regardless-it got you off your couch and out. defacing the phone book may be an issue. some people do still use them!
  11. May 31, 2008 is butler, pa's cito this year. annual cito for us at alameda park.
  12. thanks for the info. zoie has a vet appt. for heartworm testing-can add this one. she's got ticks all over her from being out. she's vac. against lyme disease. pulled off about 6 or so ticks after asp geobash.
  13. next time the butler crew is headed toward dubois will give you a yell. I'm sure we'll be in the area at some point in time.
  14. I've passed it several times. We were going to stay there but you don't make reservations-if I remember right it was first come first serve. we were going to take a girl scout troop there and pay with a troop check-they only accept cash and travelers checks. believe it's a private campground. if I remember right they allowed pets. Haven't driven through it to know if it's nice. It's def. in a nice area of Erie. You'd be very near Waldameer/Water World Park (which has a brand new roller coaster) and Presque Isle. Both great places to visit. There's a very nearby earthcache at Tom Ridge Enviro. Center. If you gamble-you're not far from a casino. As far as caching lots of great caches around the Isle for hiking (be prepared for ticks though). The city of Erie will keep you busy caching for months if you like urban hides. If you stay there-let us know what you thought! checked their website real quick-the pictures look nice.
  15. rain didn't hold us back too much! I am very, very glad booked a cabin with heat this year. activities went on as planned. had so much fun at the event. really liked the store preorders so stopping in the store was very simple. glad the caches were perm. this year although we didn't really head out for too many new ones. night caches were cool-at least the ones we did. My biggest favorite thing-love that the event is DOG friendly (and pig friendly). Very well organized and lots of prizes that maybe next year I'll win one of! was there last year as well. liked the new location. seemed to have more room. When I left to go home sunday after pancakes was 500 people signed in-did it go mega?? thanks all for putting the event together and all the people who volunteered their time to make it run smoothly. thanks to bluejaytoo and wes for agt passport validations at the event. got my 10th coin there. great meeting so many cachers some new and some old and some I only see at the geobash.
  16. I've never gone to cemeteries before caching. it's been interesting reading the markers and other historic plaques/markers. right now have 2 cemetery hides. one where my brother is and one in a little country cemetery not many people know about. both are hidden with respect and not near markers. It's okay if you don't want to stop for them. there's caches I try to avoid. I've seen one cemetery cache placed in front of a marker with another marker leaned over to cover it. other then that all have been placed away from graves and markers in tree lines. a few people have posted about cemetery hides at night-most of the cemeteries we've gone to around pa/oh are dawn to dusk. found one in a local cemetery that had fire tacks from the edge of trees right to the cache but it's not a night cache. they maybe wanted to make it that way but the cemetery isn't open at night.
  17. we have a few caches that need boats around here. some on islands, some banks of a creek/river, some underwater. lots of variety if you got a boat to go get em!
  18. I try not to drop bugs or coins into a new cache listing since most of mine take about 3 or more months for the land managment to approve. interesting to know that when I write up the page and mark no to sending to reviews that they still know there's a possible something out there. I have dropped all my coins and bug (my dog is a travel bug) into an archived cache to keep them out of inventory.
  19. 1 Event 2 Virtuals 3 Traditional 4 Earthcache 5 Letterbox 6 Multi 7 Unknown 8 Webcam 9 Wherigo out my way there's many events within a 100mile radius to choose from pretty much all the time. our viturals that are left are pretty easy. earthcaches as 4 cause they're my fav. and 4 is my lucky number. put Wherigo as last cause don't have the equip. to find any! same with webcams-really not too tech. to know how to get these ones completed.
  20. I've cached in buffalo but def. not in the buff. geez-the poor people that cache with me!
  21. I don't mind tiny caches in highly public areas. usually the cache has taken you to a nice scenic view, some touristy area, someplace you wouldn't have visited without a cache there. even if you don't find the cache you've still had a great time learning a new town and seeing the sights.
  22. I don't log my hidden caches as finds. if one is-it's a mistake and will be changed to maint. log or a note. now I do log an event I've put together as an attended, which adds one to my find count.
  23. I have one cache along a floodplane. I temp. disable it when you can not canoe to it which is how you're suppose to find the cache. Haven't changed d/t rating. around my parts-there's cache challenges that are based on those ratings.
  24. looks like 1932.9 is my farthest cache find. I beleive it's also the first find in Nevada for me. Metamucil Challenge GC90BA. learned what 'rock scambling' is on that trip.
  25. will have to remember my animal response jacket-only problem is it's high visable yellow with reflective strips. might cause more attention! anyway, for stealth-zoie becomes a decoy. go on zoie-go pee. usually works well unless there's no grass around-then looks a little strange. favorite stealth hide was at a pa rest area in the pet section. worked great. zoie peed while I signed the log.
