This is our first major trip anywhere for our 13 aniversary. we leave Saturday stay 3 days in Venice then Athens, Kusadasi, Istanbul, Mykonos, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Marseille and finally Barcelona which we will stay one more day then fly home. I am getting ready to go to Venice and thinking about taking the explorist 500 with me. I don't have the european map and was wondering if the unit would just show a white screen. If possible I would just use it to mark a hotel and use the tracking to get back to home base. Has anyone tried something like this? Thanks Irv

I have a Explorist 500 that I use to navigate and play with. My question is what settings or datum do I have to use when out of country. Will be traveling to Venice, Greece, Turkey, France and dock in Spain. To be able to accurately set point for coordinates, what Map Datums should I use. Thanks Irv

Updated my 500 so far so good. No hang ups, smooth running Able to bring in my saved so.cal - so az map from sd card Irv

Thanks, Stunod Will use that method to go to given co-ordinates to see where the area is. Just received my Mapsend Software yesterday and will begin to try and lean how to get maps on the gps also. Irv

While watching CNN they showed the status of TS Tammy and they gave a coordinate of where it was off Florida. My question, is there any way of inputting the coordinates directly to the 500 and have it go there. Thanks Irv

Thanks for your inputs really appreciate it, being a new user information is a great key in learning this unit. Will probably deal with the program later since I went to a Best Buy here in San Diego and could not get information from several salesperson on whether it covered Puerto Rico or worked in XP. Down to 2 days and a wake up and don't want to buy and find out it doesn't cover PR for now. Thanks Irv

Hi I have heard some people are having trouble with this program while trying to load from CD rom. Would like to buy this street map to enhance the one it came with but don't have to much time to mess with it now. Will be going to Puerto Rico this next Saturday for a week and will be taking the 500 with me. Would be nice to have the street map for over there to get around. Can They be used on the airplane? Looks like the problem is running windows 98se. Should be using XP or Win 2k. Maybe will convert somewhere down the line. thanks all Irv

Well I deleted the software and re-installed while the unit was not connected. I made sure that the cable ran the correct way, downward. Still can not get the usb .inf file to load. will look to see if I can find another copy of it and keep trying. Thanks for all the suggestions Irv

Hi All Just received an explorist 500 for an anniversary present. Being it's my first GPS I am enjoying the functions. This past weekend I bought myself a 512 SD card for it and it seems to see it. My problem is that I can not get the 500 and PC to communicate via the USB Cable. The manual says that it will duplicate the file structure in the internal memory side to the SD side. I had it show only for a brief moment that it was connected as my "G" drive (next available). I am running Windows 98 SE. I can see the software loaded in the pc. I have a palm and my mp3 player on the hub. Also went direct to another usb and to an usb 2.0 Can anyone shed some lite. Thanks Irv
