  1. Hello, In the last few months I have attempted to open the Geocaching app many many times, only to have it exit the app at the opening title page. Obviously this is very frustrating. I deleted the app from my phone, turned the phone off and on again, then reinstalled the app and it was working fine. I've just tried to open it again - same problem. I've deleted and reinstalled again, and it is currently working. However, I have no reason to suspect that it will continue to work. Please could this be sorted out as it is very frustrating. Thanks.
  2. Could we have a box on every page where we could enter the GC code to go to a specific cache? At the moment, the only ways (that I know of) to get to a specific cache that you know the GC code for is to go to the Home screen, delete the coordinates that are there and enter the GC code (rather laborious), or when on a cache listing, change the url address. If there was a simple box (ideally with the 'GC' part of the code already prefilled) on every page, faster navigation would be possible. This box could easily fit into the top banner that contains the link to the home page and my personal log on ID, and a lovely clear black green space that is just waiting for a useful tool to be placed in it!
  3. This is all very confusing. I am glad that lab caches are now included in the stats as having two find counts was very odd, but now there seem to be other problems: 1. The lab caches don't seem to count as distinct finds, which is clearly incorrect. On checking my geocaching logs, my lab cache find for "I heart geocaching" doesn't appear. 2. My "I heart geocaching" lab cache doesn't appear as a listing that I own. If it counts as a find for my friend, why doesn't it count as an owned cache for me? 3. Why don't they appear in the distance charts? I had to specify a starting place for the cache and thus it has a location... I don't understand why Groundspeak haven't just added lab caches as another type of geocache with all of the same attributes as any other type, simply with the restriction that I cannot place any more of that type without 'applying' to do so or whatever Mega event organisers do?
  4. What does it actually mean to have a geocacher as your friend on gc.com? I've got a facebook account and so am familiar with what 'friends' mean in that context, but I can't seem to see any real reason or benefit for friends on gc. Any thoughts?
  5. Thanks for the responses. Having now been thinking about this for a few days, I think that I am not going to log any Earthcaches retrospectively, even for the ones where I know the answers, unless I travel to those countries again. What I was suggesting doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the earthcache concept and when I visited those areas I wasn't deliberately trying to find the answers for the earthcache. Whilst I think that this is the right decision, it is a shame as I know the answers to several that I am unlikely to visit ever again. Oh well, I'll just have to make more of a concerted effort to travel more!
  6. This may have been discussed before, in which case I'm sorry. I was thinking about some of the countries that I have travelled to this morning and thinking that it was a shame that I didn't know about geocaching when I visited them all. A flash of inspiration later and I realised that it is possible that I may meet the criteria for many of the Earthcaches in the countries if I have visited the specific areas and can remember (or have photographed and can look back to 'remember') the various details. What are your thoughts on me logging the caches now despite having been at the appropriate site a few years ago? Obviously I would only log one (and send the appropriate message) if I have genuinely been there and can meet the criteria. Also, if you think that it is acceptable for me to log the Earthcache, what date should I put for the log? I am unlikely to be able to remember the precise date I was there but should be able to get it to within a particular month. In my mind that is what it should be, but what if the date I was the predates the publication of the cache? Thanks in advance for any responses!
  7. Yes, sorry for the confusion, but I did mean the 'challenge caches', i.e. caches with the word 'challenge' in the title that are things like only being allowed to log a find if you have found caches in five other countries, or whatever.
  8. Hello. How do I search for specific geocache types near to my home location? I can search for caches near me. I can search for caches with the word "Challenge" in the title. But I can't work out how to search for geocaches with the word "Challenge" in the title and then organise them by distance so that I can find the nearest ones. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  9. I may have to borrow a pc from a friend and try for the maps on that. I can't afford the Garmin maps at the moment though as they're just too expensive. The bird's eye would be nice though.... The base camp software won't run on my Mac either which is incredibly annoying! As for GSAK, I can't use that on a Mac.
  10. Having been using my iPhone for caching for a fair while, I've finally bought my first GPS - a Garmin Etrex 20. I have two main problems - loading new maps onto the unit and getting the geocaches on the unit. I'm using a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 if that is relevant to the problem. 1. I've tried talkytoaster and gpsfiledepot for getting new maps onto the unit and am struggling to get either to work. Any thoughts as to why this might be? 2. I've tried using 'MacCaching' but every time I try to send the gpx file to the gps unit, the program quits. SO I've had to resort to copying and pasting the gpx file manually into the appropriate folder on the gps unit. Whilst this works, I obviously don't get any of the functionality that MacCaching would allow. I'm a little frustrated right now and I haven't even been out to find a cache with the unit yet! Thanks in advance.
  11. Thank you all for the fantastic responses. I'm just waiting for my Ordnance Survey map to arrive in the mail and then I can get a proper sense of where I want to hike. I think what I will do is mark the various suggestions made by you all on the map and then see if an obvious route presents itself. I'll keep you all informed and probably still be asking for more advice, but please feel free to suggest any more!
  12. Loads of suggestions! Thank you! And good to have Fellsmanhiker's caches recommended too - I will definitely have a good look through all of your suggestions. The Lake District is just so lovely and it's hard to narrow down to which bits I'd like to hike through!
  13. Great suggestions. I will have a specific look in those areas. Thank you!
  14. Another great suggestion. Thank you, it's gone on the bookmark list for later consideration. Any more are always welcome!
  15. They look like some great suggestions - thank you! I have added them to my ongoing bookmark list for thought. I'm not worried about a scramble at all. I recently did Scafell Pike and Snowdon with some friends and we had quite a scramble route on both. Any more suggestions are definitely welcome!
  16. That is a fantastic site. I didn't know about that one - thank you for pointing it out to me, it will be very helpful in planning it all!
  17. I have quite a few caches in the Southern Lake District,as to weather they are great is not for me to say mostly they are on the high fells there are some which make up a series on The Coniston fells I also have a few on the Scafells, but my caches are Not artificially set as grid filling enticements, for that particular aspect of the game I have absolutely no interest,If I can be of any assistance in suggesting routes don't hesitate to email me. That sounds exactly like what I would like to do! My main interest is in finding some great caches. The D/T grid and power trail ideas are very much secondary to my main goal of just having some great hikes through the District. I would be very interested in looking at your caches / hearing your thoughts on a route. (I can't send you a long email now as I'm at work and should really get back to it! )
  18. 55 views and no replies? Does anyone know of any great caches in the Lake District?
  19. Hello all, I'm looking for some help in planning a trip to the Lake District. My in-laws live in the Southern Lake District and whilst we are visiting them in the summer I will be spending a few days doing some long hikes and wanted to tie this in with some geocaching. What I am looking for is as many really good caches as I can squeeze in. I have found a couple that look promising, with high favourite point numbers. Can anyone recommend some superb caches that I really shouldn't miss, or some great trails that are really worth doing? I will probably be doing some camping for a couple of nights too, so ideally I will plan one really long hike which I will complete over three days. Are there any power trails? I can't seem to see any on the maps... I'm happy with climbing up and down the fells as I'm a very active person, so I'm not put off by the terrain, although as I will be hiking on my own, I won't be attempting any that require climbing equipment. I'm missing quite a few of the higher Difficulty or Terrain ratings from my D/T grid, so I hope to get a few ticked off on my trip. Hopefully that all makes sense. Thank you in advance for any advice in planning this trip - I'm already looking forward to it and it's about 6 months away!
  20. OK, that sounds like the sort of thing I need. I'm not sure how to do that, but I'll give it a go. Thanks.
  21. In the summer I will be spending a few days hiking around the Lake District in the UK and wanted to plan my route based on various caches that I would like to get. I've only recently become a Premium Member and so am still fairly new to Pocket Queries so I'm not sure if I can use them in the manner I'd like. What I'm envisaging is going through all of the cache listings, selecting the caches that I want to find (30, 40 or more) and then uploading them to either my phone or GPS. Is there a simple way that I can do this without uploading each of them indivdually (which would be very tedious!)? I know that I could do a query for ALL caches and then delete the ones I'm not interested in (or just ignore them on my device), but this would seem to be too much work too. Thanks.
  22. I'm always happy to try my hand at a puzzle, if you want.
  23. Hello. I recently posted a similar question on here and was given quite a lot of help. Here's the link in case it's of interest to you: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=265176&st=0&p=4569299&fromsearch=1entry4569299
  24. OK, so I did the numbers. There are currently 55,226 topics posted in the country section (not including the 'All Nations' section) and 16,842 are in the UK section. This is approximately 30% of the topics. 30% of the 5 million worldwide cachers is a little over 1.5 million cachers in the UK. I find this very hard to believe. To put this in some context, there ar 16,842 topics posted for the UK, but only 20,903 for the whole of the US. There is over 4 times the population of the UK in the US and you would naturally expect over 4 times the geocaching population in the US too. All these figures show us is who is the more active when posting topics! An interesting idea for how to work it out though and definitely worth exploring. Also, is GC.com available in other languages? Do Chinese and Indian cachers simply post in other forums? I still stand by my original estimate of somewhere between 75,000 and 100,000, although I'm happy to be shown a different method that will give a more accurate answer.
