  1. I carry a large Marmot Walkabout Lumbar Pack with smaller plastic bags inside. It holds about 625 cu. in. Without the water and with the basic supplies listed below it weighs about 3 pounds. The stuff I carry for first aid Cost about $20. Since I bought it all separately I have re-fills for everything. If I use something (and I have) I try and replace it that night. I keep a gallon of drinking water in my van. After reading this you'll know for sure I'm paranoid. I hate to be caught without something I need. 2. I started leaving pencils from my job. I went to a cache once and there was nothing there to write with. At my next find I started leaving a logo pencil. I also carry NY state quarters in case the cache is to small for a pencil. Mostly we don't take anything. My son is past the McToy age and I'm almost past it. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  3. Shipping for free is nice....BUT..... Getting the stamp free is even nicer. This is where I got my stamp from. It's stamped over 50 bills on the ink sent and is still going strong. Here's the link superfastprinting free stamp I don't have anything to do with this company. I just came accross this one day while surfing the web. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================

  5. I have downloaded via easyGPS all the geocache waypoints within a 40 mile radius of my home. I would like to download the pages too. This way when I'm on the road with no access to a network I'll still be able to check on what I'm looking for (virtual, multi, webcam or standard Geocache). TIA (Thanks In Advance) ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  6. If it's not to big you may want to try an indelible ink marker. Sharpie is a good brand. Take a look around for one that has a large (1/4" to ½") tip. It will take a little longer to color but it will never flake off. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  7. I read about three newsgroups on a daily basis. I haven't posted in one for at least 12 years. Once the Email scavenger bots started trolling the newsgroups I stopped posting. I have a fixed IP address so even falsifying my email wouldn't be enough to stop the spam. At least here your email isn't posted anywhere unless you post it. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  8. It seems that a lot of cache hiders lowball their terrain ratings. I have a daughter who is in a wheelchair so I pay pretty close attention to terrain. So far I have found at least 3 one ( 1 ) star terrain caches that should be a two ( 2 ) star. ClayJars rating system seems to be very accurate and fair. It doesn't take into account the fitness level of the placer. What one person feels is an easy hike could be impossible for you. I would read the logs (it takes some of the fun out of the hunt but you haven't got much choice) and see what others say about the terrain. Good luck and if you're ever in Northern, NJ email me and I'll be happy to let you know the caches that would challenge you without being impossible. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  9. I just received a Rand McNally streetfinder GPS for Laptop PCs. The thing retails for $99 American. I opened it (I checked to see if everything was there) and the rubber feet don't seem to want to stay attached. A little glue should take care of that though. I'll sell it for $55.00 + S/H (should be about $9) . I checked the closed auctions on Ebay and they are going for about $70. If no one wants it I'll Ebay it. Here is a link to the unit from Rand McNally My Ebay feedback is under Harrald64 Email me at Harrald64@thelarkinfamily.net ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  10. Checking for ticks is a must!!! In 3 weeks we have found 2 ticks on my wife. I now know more about ticks than I should. Other than that have fun and if you have a camara take pictures. I have a cheap digital and have a photo record of every (except one where my batteries were dead) cache I have found. It's great to look back. Another one joins the cult!!! ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================

  12. quote:Originally posted by The GeoGadgets Team: I've been working on this problem for months and finally came up with a solution: Gallon or larger-sized food containers from restaurants. If you check your local paint supply store (not home depot. A real paint store) you may find clean un-used versions of these containers. The problem with these is that after a few times being opened and closed they may start to leak. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  13. My guess would be that anyone who is going to sell here would also be selling on Ebay and/or Yahoo auctions. You should be able to check the feedback rating on one of those sites to know if you're dealing with a respectable person. Sometimes you want to sell to people you know. That would be why they are selling here. I was trying to buy a bunch of GPSr's made for lap-top use. I would have let people here know I was selling them. Then I would sell them at cost. Whatever I had left over I would have ebayed for 4 times what I paid for them. To bad I missed getting them by 4 hours ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================

  15. quote:Originally posted by markusby: In addition, the idea of a virtual cache is a joke. Geocaching is about using a GPS to find the location. When I found the Sultan of Swat virtual cache using my GPS, I wasn't geocaching? I used my GPSr I found a location It was a great location Some great cache locations are not great locations for a cache. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  16. I'm interested making these four things work together to assist in travel. Is there software that will (using the Etrex yellow) show me where I am on a street map in real time? Also I would like to know if there is a way to upload "Tracks" to a piece of software? I have had some interesting hikes I would like to save in map form and I am as talentless with a pencil as they come. If this is beyond the capability of my GPSr I'm ok with that (It's a good reason to upgrade and being a married man I need all the upgrade arguments I can get). 19. I bought one on E-Bay for $9.99 + $4.50 S/H I've been using it for about 3 weeks and haven't had a problem at all. It's not the aftermarket cable it's the actual Garmin cable. FYI I bought it from vl1066 ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================

When does this man work? When will this man stop? 22. Unless you require that a visit to the area is necessary to log a find then by answering the question they fulfilled the requirements. While I don't agree with that method of logging caches I can see how others may feel they have done what was needed. You may want to add some type of question that only a physical visit will answer. Such as approximate height, color of pavement under area and any number of other verification questions. By the way the word "cheating" is rather strong. There are no prizes for logging the most caches. It's tough to be a cheater if there are no winners. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ====================================
  23. It seems as if this deal is dead. Out of stock on the Comp-usa website. I thought I would pass this deal along to my fellow geocachers. Comp-USA is selling the Magellan GPS 310 Navigator for $49.88. It's not a great unit. But for less than $50 whata you want? If you have any friends that are looking to get involved this may be the way to get them started. Also it might be an OK backup to leave in your glovecompartment. Here is the link.
