  1. For an old computer dummy could someone please explain in easy terms how to use Etrex, Memory and Gsak together, that would making fiding caches better for me.

What is a good number of caches to load into Etrex and how do I load in new caches without wiping the ones already loaded.

Hope someone can help a thick oldie.

See you at the Griffin then Bill!

    Mines a Cold Guinness...

Andy'll put you straight, then I'll tell you how it really works.

Seriously seeing as you are local, if you need help, I'll hook up with you sometime soon and get you all sync'd up.

Let me know what you've got to play with and we'll take it from there.

    Cheers

  2. Here's how I do mine:

First of all, don't attempt to make a filter consisting of 500 in GSAK, you may need spare waypoints in your gps when attempting multis, wanting to find your way back to the car etc, 400 caches is more than enough for one day for anybody

Using this system you don't really need to bother with Cachemate as when you touch and hold the icon on the memorymap after a few seconds it opens showing you all the info required, having said that I do load up Cachmate as back-up.

    Here goes:

    1) Delete Output.csv and Cache folder from C drive. (obviously the first time you try this it may not be there)

    2) Open Memorymap <Overlay><Delete All>

    3) Delete "Cache" folder from your SD card on your PDA.

(This might take it quite a few minutes).

    4) Open Memory Map on your PDA <Overlay><Delete All>

(4a) I have my MM sored on a CF card on my pda - I still send stuff to my SD card though, it still works ok, if you also have a CF card as well as an SD you should have a file called "Geos" open it and delete it's contents too)

    Everything should now be clear.

    5) GSAK <File><Export><Custom Export>

    6) GSAK <File><Export><HTML files>

    7) GSAK <File><Export><GPX/LOC files>

(7a) If you want to use TomTom to get to the area then GSAK <File><Export><TomTom)

    8) Open Memory Map <Overlay><Import> Output.csv

    9) Hook up PDA using Active sync as normal.

    10) In Memory Map <PDA><Export Data to PDA>

    11) Use Activesync and navigate to your SD card

    12) Drag "Cache" folder (which is on “C drive”) onto your SD card

    13) Drag GPX file onto your SD card (File that is, not folder)

(13a If also using Cachemate then drag the same GPX file onto your Cachmate icon)

    14) Hook up your GPS with the PC

    15) GSAK <GPS><Send Waypoints>

Hope the above is of some help.

Thanks to Dave MarsBar for the above to which I have added the merest tweak! :D

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing...

Andy read your own sig! ;)

What Andy says is basically correct....for him. :)

However he is running a version of roolku's script to export his icons and html files from GSAK...

it doesn't sound like you are as yet....once you do you'll never go back!

  3. General rule of thumb (my thumb that is) is that rural micros cheapskate!

Why place a film canister where an ammo box or similar can be hidden?

Micros should only be used where a larger container can't be hidden.

i.e. urban locations where the hide should be clever to at least give some sense of satisfaction in finding it.

Like previous posters I agree that micro's thrown in hedges show little or no imagination.

As part of a well constructed multi I have no worries about them.

Kids hate 'em and this for many (no not all, I agree) is supposed to be a family pastime, I hate having to bribe them to find micro's [:)]

  4. Don't believe a word of it!

He's not nice... he isn't seventy... I bet he's not much more than fifty if the truth be told!!!!

I demand a recount on his finds!!!!

Well I'm just a bit miffed that he arranged this combined 70th Birthday/1000 Finds/new cache whilst I'm out of the country......

Now that I've calmed down I s'pose I could say....

    CONGRATULATIONS...

Grifin ASAP? Andy's buying apparently

    Cheers

Our very first find was the Berry badge and Keyring exchange.

It was rather wet in that area but there is an easier drier route to take, shame we didnt find it in the first place but it was fun!

Not as wet as we got Bob! Remember this on your Jonny Cash series?

Took us about an hour all told but we never gave up!

  6. In the same vein, I or rather my son has a cache in some local woodlands.

I always put a sticker on the box identifying it as a geocache with its name, our user name and the GAGB answerphone number on it. 07092 040 416

Whilst on holiday in the south of France last year I recieved an email from the Bill D (wwh) wearing his GAGB hat informing me that someone had found my cache and would I contact them ASAP on a mobile phone number.

I texted them straight away explaining that I would be in touch as soon as we arrive home, expecting the person to be local to the cache and consequently to our home.

On arriving home I rang to enquire if they had kept the cache for me...

...He said he certainly had kept our "little box of cars" safe and sound.

I'll pop 'round for them now then if that's OK....where do you live?

    Childwall, Liverpool came the answer...

..He'd been out walking his dog in our locale whilst visiting relations and his dog had unearthed the cache.

Not knowing wher he got it from he decided to take it home....some 10-15 miles away!

We went around straight away to collect it, not wanting and infact refusing a monetary reward for his goodwill I, with his permission, gave a fiver to his kids to buy some sweets/comics etc.

The cost of the journey to pick it up and the "reward money" far outweighed the value of the cache but I was made up that a "muggle" had taken the time and effort "to do the right thing" rather than bin it or worse still vanalise it and scatter the contents, as sooo often happens! [:yikes:]

    Cheers

    Dave

  9. I had a similar error once with 700 caches in my overlay, when MM crashed. I renamed the old version of the overlay and that worked (although the HTML links were stuffed). I now export the overlay twice from the Pc so that the old version is a duplicate of the current one if it happens again.

Good idea and one that I will take on board next time I export from MM to Pocket Navigator.

I get the same error from time to time. The annoying thing is that is usually fails after a prolonged time of use, when I'm nowhere near my PC. I've followed MM's recommended path of checking for MM and ActiveSync upgrades, but I generally just get different errors. Now I just go straight for the drastic option and delete the overlay file. As soon as you run the next export it warns you the file doesn't exist, and promptly creates a new one for you. Maybe the secret is to regularly close MM down cleanly using "Exit" and then restarting to keep the memory reasonably clear.

I also get this sort of thing happening from time to time if I am using Pocket Navigator without a live feed from a GPSr. If it has a constant feed it behaves nicely all day.

    Cheers

  10. You are right I want to down load everything as to be selective I would need to learn how to use GSAK properly!! I spent the money going paperless to avoid computers...I guess I will have to force myself to put the time into learning the technology, to have more/better caching in the future, thanks for the input :)

Going paperless will save you using your printer and buying ink cart's but as you now know it won't help you avoid computers in any way at all, if anything you will be more embroiled in the wonderful world of gadgetry etc... that some of us enjoy...sometimes...when it works !

    Sorry

    Dave

  11. I still maintain a full UK DB on GSAK, however people often get confused about the nature of PDA's they are what they say a "Personal Digital Assistant". They are not a full blown PC/Laptop.

Use them for what they are... a convenient way of carrying information with you for day to day tasks... including caching.

I agree if you are able it's great to download up to the minute information but I usually go caching when the opportunity arrises and it's usually a dash out of the door or something to do whilst waiting around when I'm away from home. So for me having all bases covered is quite important.

I gather the full UK DB over the course of a week and update my PDA once, maybe twice a week.

Using a selection of filters I download unfounds 30m around home minus puzzle caches as they are usually false coords anyway, Motorway mayhems and then do any other filters for places that I know I am headed to over the next few days... these I will usually keep to 5-7mile radius of my hotel etc.

The resulting caches for all the above filters I apply a user flag to and then finally filter for all user flags before exporting the csv file for MM and HTML files.

This usually gives me around 500 caches on my PDA at any one time.

The Ipaq flies with this amount of waypoints on...clicking on the icons brings up the offline html page....

    Cheers

    Dave

  12. When I export my cache overlay to my ipaq 2790 it work fine for a while and then complains about a file sharing violation on the overlay file. Stopping and restarting the program causes the message 'an attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end' to come up. MM then works but the overlay does not display.......any ideas B) (the overlay is for all uk caches but thats because I get about a bit)

Doubt your PDA will handle 13000+ waypoints.

Everything will slow down and eventually crash as you've found out.

Try limiting it to around 500 caches.

You need to filter using GSAK and select the areas and cache types that you are interested in etc.

Your PDA needs updating at least once a week anyway as cache information changes constantly and caches get archived etc.

    Cheers

    Dave

  13. Does any one have any spare G-mail invites that they could send me.

    Wots a G-mail?

    Now also known as googlemail...

it's a web based email account that can also be accessed directly by GSAK.

So they are perfect for PQ's.

    Cheers

  14. I think everything I could say has already been said. My personal (uninformed) opinion is that I can't see a problem.

  15. I have just loaded a PQ into my database that was generated for another cacher.

It has increased my found caches which ordinarilly I would be pleased about :anitongue: but I want the database to be accurate.

Apart from using the "date found by me" and clicking on each cache individually to change the cache status back to "unfound" is there a simpler way, or a macro that can do this automatically after such an import.

BTW we are bpoth premium members so there is nothing untoward here.

    Cheers

    Dave
