  5. quote: It must not have occurred to you to simply share a picture of it here. What? You mean I could have done that? Who woulda thunk it! But then again, if I had just posted the picture, you wouldn't have gotten the full effect of the counter in all it's glory.

  7. I wasn't sure where else to post this, so I hope this is a good spot. I've been working on my own Geocaching page and decided this morning that I ought to put a counter on it. Not wanting to just have a plain ol' counter, I came up with something especially for Geocachers. Take a look at it HERE. And no, this isn't just a shameless way to try to get more numbers on my counter. If you like the counter graphic and would like to use it, please feel free. Click on the Bravenet link to get a free counter for your own page. I don't mean for this to be a Bravenet commercial, but it was the only on that really fit the design. Bret

For that matter, the thief could even customize the unit to their liking if they want to keep it for their use. Eh, odds are still in your favor if you use this software. First of all, the thief has to know what a GPS is, know that Garmin even offers firmware updates, have a GPS/serial cable. On top of that, there has to BE a thief, instead of just a forgetful GPS owner . . . which seems to be more common.

  11. It's 1:23 am here in Illinois and I just came back inside from checking to see if this works on my eTrex Venture. No go . . . I'm goin to bed. Bret
  12. A great number of the benchmarks in our area are supposedly along the old railroad. Unforunately the railroad is gone (it's now either farmland or a never-completed/illegal-to-access bikepath). If the benchmarks were actually ON the railroad, they have to be gone--removed or plowed under. But, if they're along the side closest to the road, there might be a few left out there. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Were they really there for you or not? Thanks!
  13. The first time I left my eTrex Venture on the dash for any length of time (a little over a half hour) I came back out to find that it had shut itself off. I turned it on, laid it in the dash again and it did it again. Everything was fine after I let it cool down. Anyone else have this happen?

Maybe it's the same reason why they used to limit speedometers to 85 mph -- to protect us from ourselves. So--harkening back to those days--how long can you bury the needle on your GPSr?

  19. quote:Get your taste buds ready...because a nice warm flu-fighting bottle of the stuff is http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=7950 to a cache near you. Send it this way, I'll drink it and send the bottle back your way so you can get the deposit. I'll see if I can find something nice to put in the bottle, too. By the way, if you've never been to Michigan, one of the most entertaining things they've got is the bottle/can return machines in the grocery stores. I could have stood there for hours and watched the things! Bret

  23. So, what's the highest top speed you've seen on your GPS? When I first got my Venture, I set it so it would keep my top speed. Something must have happened because one day I looked at it and it said 1295 mph. Another time I went for a walk and it said my top speed had been 49 mph. I am pretty fast. Bret
  24. The slightly more expensive NiMH versions, not the Alkaline's that seem to like to blow up in my charger. What's up with that, anyway? I was able to pick up a few of them cheap when Kmart closed a couple weeks ago. Bret
  25. What if the cache was "subscriber only" for the first 3 months of it's life or the first 5 finds recorded on the site (pick your own numbers), whichever came first. This would insure that a cache probably wouldn't get plundered on the first day it was hidden. I guess this wouldn't have to be an official setting from Geocaching.com . . I suppose the person hiding the cache can come back later and remove the "members only" qualification, can't they? Bret
