  1. HEADLANDERS

    Map Feature

This is very useful both for planning walks and also placing new caches to see separation of caches.
  2. Groundspeak already had the 'Scale Marker' on the old maps for the Openstreetmap view. Why can this not be reinstated without Google maps?.
  3. This feature was really useful both for planning a cashing trip to get an idea of distance to walk and also when placing new caches to make sure of separations. Surely this wasn't a cost issue. Please replace it.
  4. HEADLANDERS

    New maps

Why has the distance 'Scale Marker' bar been removed from the maps. This is really useful to get an idea of the distance to walk when planning a caching trip. It is also useful when placing caches. Please reinstate this feature.
  5. Another thing that's now also missing is the 'Scale Bar'. This was very useful when creating new caches to make sure of adequate separation from other caches. Surely this wasn't a cost issue!.
  6. Well, things have gone backwards in a BIG way with this current web site update: 1.) Very slow to render maps 2.) No Google satellite view.
  7. Yes, but when older software is no longer supported, it usually still works. The old 4.2.2 Version of geocaching for iPhone does NOT.
  8. I too find the update has rendered old versions inoperative. I find this unbelievable really. I can no longer make any searches or download PQs in Version 4.2.2. I have not been offered any updates presumably because newer version requires an iOS>3.1 and I do not wish to upgrade my iPod OS for various reasons.. Nevertheless it is APPALLING that any old version stops working particularly as it has been PAID FOR. Please restore functionality to Version 4.2.2 as soon as possible. otherwise please offer a means of REFUNDING the cost of the app. Thank you.
  9. I'm glad GOOGLE didn't feel that way when yahoo, msn, alta vista and a few other search engines were the staple. Anyone else remember Facebook's launch when competing with myspace? Competition breeds improvement. Still hoping here. I think it would be great to have more choices out there that had good quality (unlike the current endeavors). The monopoly GS has on this hobby right now will simply allow them to dictate the entire structure, which apparently isn't pleasing the masses as much any more, judging from the posts going around. So unlike the poster listed above, I would not rather give up the hobby but rather have other GOOD choices. Of course if the powers that be here at GC.COM get things rolling again as in the past the competition would be a hard sell. CHEERS Since you mentioned Google: things would certainly change in terms of performance, database speed etc if they saw a business interest in being involveed in geocaching and either starting up an alternative site or buying up an existing one .
  10. I agree. If this was intentional, then it's a big step backwards.
  11. Geocaching.com usernames aren't case sensitive, so Headlanders and HEADLANDERS can't exist at the same time as two separate members. The website doesn't realize you're changing the capitalization of your name, it thinks you're entering the same name, which of course is already in use (by you). You'll have to email contact@Groundspeak.com and get them to change it for you. I understand. Thanks for the replies.
  12. This may sound a trivial question, but I can't find the answer: I want to change my Geocaching[dot]com username so that all the letters are 'upper case'. However, when I try to change the username it reports that the username is already in use. Is there a way to do this?.
  13. Yes, I can post the procedure I use which WORKS for me. There may be more steps in it than necessary, but that is for others to decide for themselves. I don't want to get into a debate about it. Here's what I do: 1.) Set the profile to 'Recreational' 2.) Connect the GPSr to the PC and back up the current 'Profiles' folder just in case you want you restore the ones you have now. Then delete the contents of the 'Profiles' folder. 3.) Copy across the fresh 'Profile' files to Garmin's 'Profiles' folder. 4.) Disconnect the device from the PC and reboot it. 5.) Do a 'Factory Reset'. 6.) Then change the profile to something other than 'Recreational' such as 'Automotive'. 7.) Then reconnect the device to PC. Delete the contents of the folder for a second time again and copy over the new profiles to the device for a second time. Then disconnect from the PC. 8.) Then reboot the PC and change to your chosen profile. 9.) Do a 'Factory Reset' again to be sure. 10.) Then go into 'Main Menu' > 'Setup' > 'Position Format' and check that this and 'Map Datum' settings are correct for your region. This works for me. Bill.
  14. I agree that this tool works well. Alternatively, you can do it manually at the 'command line' using the 'mkgmap' tool.
  15. On my GPSMAP 62s I can do this by going to 'Setup>Position format'. I've had a look at the Oregon manual and page 31 refers to the setting on that device. I have different coordinate settings on different 'Profiles' depending on what the maps or event details I am following use.
  16. On what facts do you base this assumption? The 62s is an outdoor mapping unit that has geocaching as one of its functions and is not a dedicated geocaching unit - as you know. I use mine for general walking, car navigation ( yes I do have a bulit in unit as well in the car ) for boating as well as geocaching.... I'm sure others do too..... This comment is a little narrow minded - its a general mapping gps, not a dedicated geocaching unit. Garmin will take into consideration the needs of all the user base and not the exclusive needs of geocachers - that would limit their Customer base. I love it and I was one of those that asked Garmin to bring it back in a future release - and they did! Fantastic. I could not agree with you more on this point - geocachers are indeed only one of the 'computer forum groups' and are only one of the type of users that use this 62s unit. We dont want a computer forum group 'messing up stuff for those who actually use the devices' for other uses other than geocaching. ( I appreciate you do 1000+ caches per day ) Like I have said before and what I asked Garmin to do when I requested the facility back - the sensible thing here is for Garmin to listen to users needs, and while I do appreciate some users find the proximity alarm annoying, the solution is for Garmin to make this facility switchable - on for those that like it, switch it off if you dont..... then we both would be happy, right? Perhaps I'm missing something here, but why not simply have an option in the Settings to toggle the proximity alarm 'on or 'off'?.
  17. Have you checked the dates on your 4 new cache logs? A couple of us have been caught out this morning by changing 5/5/11 to 4/5/11 to log yesterday's finds. But this logs the find as being 5th APRIL and hence the found it log on the geocaches list drops down so they are not at the top of the list (which is sorted in date order) See Happy Humprey's new thread: HERE Yes, many thanks, I hadn't noticed that change.
  18. Until recently, I could log new caches on the web site and then after refreshing the page the icons on the map page for the recently 'found' caches would have changed to the 'found' icon. This now does not happen for quite some time (I haven't times this exactly). Why the slowness to update now?. This seams a step backwards. Also, I have just logged 4 new finds. The total found caches shown in my profile has been updated but the new finds are now yet shown in the 'Geocaches' list. Again, why the slowness to update?. Another step backwards. Please stop 'tinkering' with the web site unless there is a real user benefit or at least don't make updates live until these basic functions have been tested. Thank you.
  19. Yes, it's really worth you taking out 'Premium Membership' to get the best out of that GPS unit you have. You should read up on this site about creating 'Pocket Queries' which are essentially lists of up to 1,000 caches tailored to your search criteria. Once you have download the query you simply copy it to a directory on your SD card entitled GARMIN\GPX. Then you will be able to see all those caches on the maps and also read the descriptions, hints etc just like on the web site. The process is quite easy and it is all described on Geocaching web site. Bill.
  20. Is there a reason for not posting the solution here? I am in the same boat and would love to know the fix. I am having an issue with the GPSr powering off when I try and use the next stage feature on multi caches. I think my profiles might be corrupt. Thanks, TWS Yes, I'm sorry for not posting the final solution, but as the other poster said, it can be achieved by replacing the contents of the profile folder with 'virgin' profile files. Two people kindly sent me their files which I used successfully. The 'Recreational' Profile will of course have been modified slightly as that is the default one used at the first boot of the GPSr. The other issue I ran into was that one person sent me files from the US which meant that my unit then had map datum settings for the US continent. This was easily changed when I realised. Bill. If that is all it takes for the fix, I could really use a set of the US default profiles for the 62s. If anyone can help me out, that would be great. -TWS If you send me a message with your email address I will send you the profile directory that was sent to me from someone in the USA as it was not on this forum that I made contact with him. I will also provide you with a few notes on suggested procedure I used to make sure that nothing remained 'tainted' by any of the old profiles. Bill.

  22. Many thanks for your email message. I have sent you a reply. Bill
  23. Do a factory Reset - from the Wiki: M1.) How do I master reset my Garmin GPSMAP 62/78? [Menu][Menu]>Setup>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will be asked if you want to reset user data. If you answer "Yes" the unit will be master reset. I've tried this several times but it doesn't seem to achieve what I want. For example, if I'm in the 'Geocaching' Profile and go through the reset procedure you suggest then things like 'Sounds' and some basic things are reset, BUT also the colours and other mapping features are reset but are NOT as they were when I originally had the device and selected the 'Geocaching' Profile. I am lost for ideas on this one.
  24. I has been messing around with the profiles on my unit and now wish I hadn't. I want to especially get the 'Geocaching' and 'Autootive' profiles back to there original settings. How can I get the Profiles back to the original settings like when the unit was new?. Perhaps it needs something like actually deleting a configuration file via a USB-PC link. If this is not easily possible, is there a reference somewhere that documents the settings in each profile?. Any help will be appreciated.
