  1. check out Craigslist. if not local buyer will need to pay for shipping as well. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/3737285726.html
  2. is the included base map or Topo USA give you the ability to do door to door navigation? Somewhere i read it wasnt true door to door, rather approx, more like city block to city block. I currently have a 60CS with TOPO only and debating about buying the Delorme.
  3. No. To use auto routing you need an auto routing GPSr and auto routing data sent from the mapping application. Metro guide does not send auto routing data to the GPSr so you are left with the sound of one hand clapping. just so i understand...if i upload MG data (map data, not a route generated on PC) can i not use the map data (not routing data) and do a "go to" on the 60cs unit? sorry for the ignorance, just want to make sure i get what i need/want short of buying a new unit. thx
  4. i have a 60cs. i would like to purchase CN8 but the map segs are too large. I see the MetroGuide8 has smaller map seg's. I know MG8 is designed for units that dont have auto routing but does it work with auto routing devices? can you load maps to unit and then use that data to auto route on the unit?
  5. 20 map segments totaling 101.8Mb... thanks. how wide a segment capture is it on the route to and from the cities...and what are the sizes of the two metro areas individually? i really appreciate your help. i dont use mine for door to door nav but i thought it would be nice to be able to. i would buy the older and smaller seg map software but it doesnt even have my home address so the rest of the country might have voids as well.
  6. i have a 60cs and want to buy CN, version 8 but I'm afraid the map segments will be too large. without buying it and finding out it wont work for my purposes could someone with v8 collect the entire orlando, dallas/fort worth metro area, and a route in between and tell me what the total meg size would be? thanks
  7. of the X series Garmins or any Magellan handhelds, do any have a voice prompt or just a tone/beep with the directions displayed on screen?
  8. well i said it was a stupid question and i turned out to be. I knew this but totally forgot. thanks for reminding me.
  9. I own a 60cs and have never had the "_ _ _ _" elevation problem described in the 60csx thread. However (and this may be a stupid question) i did notice today that no matter what zoon level i was on in the altimeter page I was not getting green plot. I reset to factory settings for the altimeter, changed zoom levels, did everything i could think of with no luck. The time/elevation recorded on the unit was the trip from home to work (23 miles with an elevation change of around 90 feet). And yes, i was getting a valid elevation reading and it was changing as i drove in. What am i doing wrong or possibly not understanding?
  10. Thanks. thats the post i was looking for. It worked the first time i did it, on my old machine. But for some reason I'm having problems this time. I followed the steps and double check directory names and locations. All the maps are accessed from hard drive but when i switch to East or Hawaii i dont get all the detail. I'm set to view highest too. also, there are no map segments to chose from on East or Hawaii. I double check the folders properties and it has the same number of files as the ones from the CD. Can anyone help? jb
  11. there was a post last year describing how you could load all the cd contents on your pc, eliminating the need to switch cd's out as you move accross the country. i did it but have since changed pc's. can someone describe again how this is done. it required changed directory names, i believe. thx
  12. not sure if this was the error i was getting or not but i was getting a network error, until i turned off my norton firewall. if you have any firewall software try turning it off. if you are on a work network it might have firewall hardware in place that you have no control over. hope this helps jb
  13. i use one custom made for my 60cs from invisible shield dot com i bought it after reading about it on this forum. the screen looks just as if the shield wasnt on (well almost). and it is extremely tough. much better than ones you buy at best buy for a pda and cut to size. check out the video demo they have on the web site. with shipping the thing ran over $10 but it is guarenteed for life. FYI, i heard DEET can be harmful to the buttons. dont know, just heard this.
  14. i have used/owned both the vista and the 60cs. as far as size it really isnt an issue for me. i will say when i changed from the vista to the 60 it took just a bit of getting used to working the buttons. i liked the joystick on the vista but it also is another thing that can break. mine never did though. but i love the 60cs. as much as i would love the new 60csx i cant justify ditching a year old unit that continuosly holds 10+ sats and a 6 feet accuracy. course that is on the water. i do however take it backpacking (last year being the first with the 60) and it worked great. i lost a signal in dense coverage every now an then but it locked back on quickly. i had it clipped and strapped to my sternum strap while walking. memory space hasnt been an issue yet but i also dont own either CS or CN, just the topo.
  15. Very well said. I like the reponse they sent back to you much more than the one I got! Anyone who doesn't have the time or skill to compose such a letter would do well to copy and paste the contents of CenTexDodger's letter above and send to techsupp@garmin.com ...That is if CenTexDodger has no objections.... Here is my response from Garmin. It appears there are no scripted response to this as mine is a bit different than others. my e-mail: I am a current user of a Garmin GPSmap60cs. I use both City Select V6, along with Topo USA. I was disappointed to learn that City Select is being discontinued after V7. I have heard that the map data in City Navigator is virtually identical to the map data in City Select; however, the large map segments in City Navigator will make it difficult for users of fixed memory handhelds (such as the 60cs) to build a custom map upload. Please consider us fixed memory handheld users as you design V8 of City Navigator. Maybe you can produce a small segment version for handheld users and a large segment version for fixed mount, large capacity users. Also, please consider allowing current City Select users to upgrade to City Navigator for the upgrade cost, rather than requiring us to pay full price for the new software. I love my 60cs but am fearful it will become obsolete if the above becomes reality without a smaller map segment version. I would love to receive a reply with any and all info. Thanks, Garmin response: Thank you for Contacting Garmin International. I do not have a lot of information about what is going to happen when version 7 of City Select is no longer available. Now, I can tell you this: The units like you have will be considered when we go to the City Navigator as the mapping product for the handheld units. There will be changes made to make the software feasible to all our units that will be using it. If you have any further questions, feel free to respond to this email or call our technical support line. Best regards, Matt K. 16. sounds like you may have selected "off road" when prompted. This will start up the geocache mode
  17. this is correct. you miss the turn and it will recalculate. i did this several times on a long road trip. the unit wanted me to take a small highway rather than the interstate. everytime it simply recalculated. this was using the basemap only. to take full advantage or auto routing you (and me) need to purchase City Select.
  18. thanks, i figured this might be the case after looking at the numbers on the signs for 16 hours. just wanted to make sure. i hope Garmin comes out with a new base map. you would think they might have already since this project has been going on since 2001. thought: if the new number is generated on the distance to the state line then how would you distinguish between two highways of equal distance, one being on one side of the state and the other the opposite? guess the possibility is next to none.
  19. just got back from a 16 hour road trip. the unit worked great. even used the "find nearest exit" capabilities to find gas and food. but for what ever reason the highway exit number on the unit was not even close to the highway exit number on the physical interstate signs. it wasnt that big of deal cause the distance to exit was right on...but why dont they match?
  20. i appreciate the help. that was the problem. the best setting seems to be "prompted" if you use the unit for road route and geocaching as well
  21. when i send a geocache waypoint to my unit, with the shut treasure chest icon, and then click the find-geocache-goto, the compass does not go into the geocache mode. instead, my unit creates a route and does not give me the "found" menu on compass page. what am i doing wrong?
  22. Excuse me if this sounds crazy and/or stupid but... would it be cheaper to just buy a serial-to-usb cable converter? Plug the serial end in unit and the usb end in laptop.
  23. I just updated my 60cs firmware from 3.8 to 4.0. On the Garmin download page it states the following: If MapSource data is loaded to this unit, this unit's preloaded POI database will be erased. Please download the file below if you wish to recover this POI database. I downloaded this file and started the wizard only to find out it is the Marine POI info. I stopped the process and checked the unit. All things seem to be there (nearest exits w/services, etc) Question is: what exactly does the Marine POI db consist of?
  24. No replies...so i take it this is impossible?
