  1. A couple great caches in Nanaimo are in the Colliery Dam park. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...df-b54cfbc2605b and http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...8c-dcde647314f8 You can nab both of them in about an hour. Another great place to go is The Morrell Nature Sanctuary. There are extensive trails in the park and quite a few caches. Heres one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...81-852280e9a125 Both of these parks are very close to each other and are on Nanaimo Lakes Road. Another nice park in Nanaimo with a quick cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...27-d616742298fe Hope this helps. Have a great time on the Island!
  2. Hi Joshula I live on Vancouver Island, Canada and there are lots of Sasquatch (that's what we call Big Foot around here) stories. Local First Nations traditionally also believe in the Sasquatch. I've talked to a few people who swear they have seen one. I have even cached in areas where they have supposedly been spotted. Check out this caching page: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...c0-e73bc855fbaa For the record, I think it would be cool if they did exist and I think it is remotely possible that they could exist but I'm not one of those true believer types.
  3. Wow, it looks really great guys! I love the 'parks friendly' idea. Very cool. Also the custom geocoins. Very nice! The featured cacher section is a nice touch too. I'll definitely check back next month for the next feature. Really good job.
  4. Hi and welcome! I can't recommend any specific caches to you (I live in the Comox Valley) but I can point you to a local forum that Victoria cachers frequent: http://www.vigps.com/phpBB2 I'm sure that you will get some response there. Happy caching!
  5. that was really funny! I liked: "Four fat people perched perilously on a tiny rock, balanced by a sapling... " It's amazing the things we will go through to find tupperware in the woods. keep it up, it's so much fun you'll forget you're exercising.
  6. Hi DMaggot You probably already know this but there are ALOT of cachers in Victoria. If you need a little help heres the local forum some of them use: http://www.vigps.com/phpBB2/ There are also a ALOT of caches in your area! If you become obsessed (and you will, trust me) you may be able to get 3-500 in a year! Good Luck!
  7. It all depends.... If it's a straightforward placement I would say that it should be listed in the next couple days. If however there is something 'unusual' about your cache it could take longer. If the cache was placed outside your general area it will also take longer. I've hidden a few now (so I know what it's like to wait anxiously while constantly checking my e-mail) and I've noticed that there is usually a regularity to when they get listed. eg: ones submitted on the weekend get listed on a Wednesday or thereabouts, ones listed during the week get listed on the weekend. That's my experience here on the Island anyways.
  8. Hey Keikos! How's it going? Sounds a bit like Coast2Coasts Stanley cup series. (which I have yet to finish up ) Any cache by you is going to be good...just try to make sure they don't get 'found' by hunters, bears or ravens!
  9. I'm also of the female variety and I'm the driving force behind our families geocaching adventures. My husband is a reluctant cacher...he goes with me on occasion and has a good time but would never think to go hunting on his own. I have no problem going by myself as long as I know the area. But it is just more fun going with someone else. (yelling 'found it' with no-one else to hear just makes me feel a little crazy) Our daughters like going, (even though one is now officially a teenager) have their own accounts and even a couple hides. Unfortunately, they are pretty much dependent on me to take them out....I have the car keys. I'm hoping when they leave home they will keep caching, IMO it's the perfect game/hobby.
  10. Same here. More logs is a good thing. My kids also have their own accounts and when they actually remember to log their finds their entries are usually pretty entertaining. My husband also has an account but as a reluctant cacher he will probably NEVER log a find!
  11. That's me too. To me, the moderators first comment came across as sarcastic and cruel. I feel it was unwarranted and inappropriate. I can only imagine that it must have been upsetting to Monkeygirl and I know it was to me. Monkeygirl, all I can say is that I am sorry you were treated like that. The moderator gave the comparison between him and Criminal in an attempt to justify his behavior. The difference is: Ones tag is 'charter throbbing member' the others is MODERATOR. I believe there is a different set of expectations of the two. The moderators job is to make sure everyone plays nice, not sucker punch the first unsuspecting person that asks a question.
  12. I'm lucky you were there to save them. Poor little things. We have a guinea pig ourselves and he is very sweet. He knows when I am making supper and whistles at me until I bring him a piece of veggie. They are nice pets. Some people just aren't very responsible. A pet is for life, not just for Christmas/Easter/birthday/whatever.
  13. Yep, thats kids for you! When my brother was a kid he found a dead dog so he and a friend went and buried it. A year later they went and dug it up and salvaged the skull. It sounds gross but I think 10 year old boys are just like that. (that is I hope.....or maybe my brother has issues... ) The other day we were hunting under the bridge for a cache. We didn't find it but the kids did find the skeleton of a cat. They thought it was great! You just never know what is going to interest kids.
  14. Ack! That is my worst nightmare! They say geocachers know the best places to hide a body...but FINDING one? Scary.
  15. I've told this story before but since you ask....This past fall I was out placing a cache. I had 6 kids with me. We had walked past an old abandoned orchard where I noticed some black bear skat but I didn't think much of it. That was my first mistake. We continued on, placed the cache and headed back. Two of the older kids were ahead of us then they came back and said very calmly 'theres a bear up there'. I thought they were just kidding with me so at first I didn't believe them. Then, about 300 feet away a bear walked around the corner. I stood there for a second, trying to decide what to do. So here comes my second mistake.... I looked at the kids and said "Run!" We all turned and ran like heck back down the trail and walked back to the car on the road. Once we got into the car the kids said "I thought you weren't supposed to run from a bear Mom!!!!" Which is true, but in this particular case I thought it best to get as much distance between us and him. Plus, I can run faster than most of the kids. Needless to say they didn't want to go caching in the bush for awhile......
  16. yep, Canadian Tire sells it. Check the hunting section. A hunting/fishing type store will probably carry it too.
  17. I have 2 dogs, 1 cat,a guinea pig and an assortment of fish. Only the dogs come along, the guinea pigs little legs are too short to keep up, the cat is indifferent to caching and I just couldn't stand to watch the fish out of water.
  18. I've never run into a Bigfoot (we call them Sasquatch where I live) but I have done this cache: seeing sasquatch Check out the logs.....one of them has the pics from the disposable camera that was in the cache. One of them looks pretty suspicious.
  19. I second the yellow garmin etrex. It's the one we have and even I was able to figure out how to use it! Don't get bogged down in figuring out all the gps technical mumbo jumbo, just learn how to enter in a waypoint and go caching. You will learn as you play. Pick 1/1 rated caches till you get the hang of it. Have fun, you two will love it!
  20. Hi slednguy It usually takes two to three days for the reviewer to approve a cache. It might take longer if theres a backlog. It might take longer if it is a long ways away from your home coordinates. It might take longer if there are 'unusual' aspects to your cache. Waiting sure is excruciating isn't it? My first cache actually took about ten days to be approved. It was a long ways from my home coordinates and I hadn't had that many finds yet. I think I probably checked my email every hour till it got approved. (hey wait I still do that! ) If it has been a few days and you haven't heard anything yet I believe that there is a link on the 'submit a cache' page where you can contact someone about your cache. Good luck! p.s. the mapquest thing is automatically generated.
  21. Hi everyone! It's my first post on these forums. I just thought I would share with you all my bear experience that happened today. We live in B.C. so what with school being out I had 6 kids caching with me today (2 are mine the other 4 are friends). We found a couple then I really wanted to place a new one. I am always aware of bears and there are some places I won't cache without my DH but I felt totally comfortable going out on this trail which was very close to civilization. So we placed the cache then headed back toward the car. The two older girls were about 20 paces ahead of the rest of us. Then one of them started walking back toward me and said "I saw a Bear!" At first I thought she was joking. Then I thought she was imagining things. But I looked again and sure enough here comes a big lumbering black bear only a couple hundred feet away from us. Needless to say we turned around and quickly, (very quickly) went back down the trail and took another route back to the car. Only after did we laugh but at the time we were all a little freaked out. We also realized that we probably shouldn't have ran but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Anyways, thats one of the great things about geocaching. We could have stayed home and cleaned the house or watched tv but instead we went caching and we had a bit of adventure. Theres nothing like bonding with the kids while running from a bear. And the kids will have something very exciting to write in their journals when they go back to school!
