  1. That's an NP-complete mathematics problem that many mathematicians have been working on since at least the Renaissance. There is no 'absolute' shortest solution, but some GPS makers have good algorithms that are somewhat good. But I think that's only for point-to-point great circle routing among your set of caches, not street routing which really adds about a million dimensions to the problem. All street routing software I've seen that has more than 2 waypoints in a route only use the first and the last one.
  2. It doesn't matter. The 528 foot rule is not a hard and fast RULE, it's a guideline. It can and will be allowed to be much smaller depending on circumstances. Some circumstances include a micro vs a large, or on one side of a river vs the other, or something that in no way possible would it be confused for the wrong cache.
  3. To see all the new caches in your area, well it depends, you can go to Hide & Seek a cache. Search by state and enter your state. All the newest caches will be on the first few pages. If you live near a border you will have to do this for multiple states. And sorry, but there are not going to be distances and directions to any of them, but at a glance you can see at least if any of them are unfound (at least unlogged yet).
  4. If you mention sponsors names in your event page then you risk not having your event accepted. There are rules against that. Read the Commercial Caches section of http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx I know of a few events that really had to push the reviewers to allow them, and even go over their heads to Groundspeak, and in ALL cases, all mention of any sponsors was required to have the event Published.
  5. OH, and be warned, that most map makers make their CD's and DVD's non-duplicatable. It's not a copyright thing, it's a theft thing. Remember the good old days of the 1980's!
  6. Huh? I put Passaic, NJ (which is what is showing in your profile) in and got 322 caches within 10 miles. I've got 162 *current* caches within my home zipcode (14850). 25 of them are mine, I have found all of the others, plus a half dozen or so that are now archived. You know, I too was going to say something about that. But instead I'll say, I think it would be a good idea for outrageous claims to be backed up with actual coords or zip code.
  7. The easiest way to put anything you like on your profile page is to steal what others have done. Well emulate, not steal. If you see something you like, do a View Source to see what HTML it is. It's good to know basic HTML here. And look for what that person did, do something similar in yours...

    HTML Help

Now to expound on what Jholly said, Hee are the different kinds of URL's you can use for profiles, caches and travel bugs. THere are even shorter ones by using the coords.inf site. http://coord.info/ http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=3617561
  9. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=205602 and http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=174494 and other threads detail why a GPS's odometer is useless, as is the track file, depending...
  10. Wow, If I were not so Magellaned out I would consider this. Especially since I once saw a 1500 at a Walmart and on the back of the unit it actually said Mobile Mapper. A true GIS gps that one can make your own maps for using their MobileMapperPro program. Others have told me I was dreaming, they are completely different beasts.
  11. GSAK will update the caches in your database if there is newer information in subsequent PQ's. The caches that already exist in your database that are not in the PQ's will not be touched. There is a column in GSAK that is called "Last Update" or something like that. And perhaps there is a column for last update date. one would be the last time the cache changed, and the other would be the last time that entry in your database was changed. I.E. Archived caches will have an older date. Now, a change in a cache includes edited cache pages itself, and more log entries. So perhaps most of your caches will get updated since most of them are probably being found.
  12. And a Walmart in Lunenburg still has one for $495 that they will NEVER sell.
  13. OOPS. It occurs to me, now 11 miles farther in my journey today to several transfer station/junk yards that I searched out that thread, copied the link but didn't paste it. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=202425
  14. The following thread, and perhaps a few linked to within it, has some numbers for a 40 mile, or 40 square mile, or 40 mile square... And my own musings about maximum possible densities.
  15. Sorry. But the military uses the P-channel that our receivers do not get. No missiles are going to go anywhere other than where they were intended. Plus there are anti spoofing error correcting codes that they use.
  16. We are small. It's same people doing both. What, I have not received my check. I think you mean to say we and the community aim to please.
  17. All is not lost. First try this. Press the Nav button and Menu button at the same time as the Power button. Or you could remove the batteries. This will get it out of that firmware upload mode. If it does not power on after that and only looks like you get a slightly darker screen, then you will have to upload firmware. Get it from Magellan or http://www.gpsinformation.net/ but I'll have to find the exact link there. Then press the Light button and the Enter (or clickstick center) button at the same time as the Power button. Then run the firmware program that you obtained.
  18. And you could probably buy a $10 American Express one time use card and use that one time online and not have to worry about anyone stealing your info.
  19. Back to the point of maintaining offline databases. I know, that's not the point. But if all one has access to is their database they can prevent themselves from spending time working on a puzzle that had been archived many months ago. GSAK is very nice in having several columns related to when an entry was last uploaded into its database, and so on. It has the nice ability to filter on such things. It has the nice ability to allow one to send such information to a PDA, or even a GPS if you are smart. One can even go as far as to remove such no longer existing (perhaps) caches from their database. Personally I have found many caches that were archived, but not yet physically removed from the world.
  20. Sounds like Magellan should put these boys on retainer! Oh, I'd love for them to just give me a geocaching.com Premium Membership gift. LOL. Or even free mapping software, I love maps. At least it's good to know that Magellan has at least one employee who frequents these forums, and has had the intelligence to release something for some products that they have washed their hands of long ago. Would I like to work for them? Perhaps not, but maybe if I could TeleCommute. And occasionally go on business trips where I could geocache states and countries I have not done yet. And perhaps be given one of their Mobile Mapper Professional GIS GPS's. And yes, it's good that they have something for Explorists, since my method (so far) has yielded no solution for that model line.
  21. Delorme used to have a really great Bluetooth GPS that also could be used by USB cable as an antenna to any of their great maps. But it appears to have never existed, do a search for EarthMate on the Delorme site. What I'm talking about is not a PMN, or a LT, or a BT, it doesn't exist anywhere there. And no, it's not the very crappy serial thing that they made decades ago, this comes bundled with Streets 2005. Now, if only Magellan ever got the idea to make their Legacy Products completely disappear from their web site then they would really be on the ball.
  22. Be sure to have @geocaching.com and @Groundspeak.com in your acceptable senders list, and make sure that they are not in your banned senders list. If they are, then no mail from them will even get into your spam folder. P.S. There is a phone number to get in touch with the company. look around.
  23. I'm going to intentionally plant caches near, but perhaps a mile from the state line, and 'accidently' say it's the other state. According to other recent threads this will not get poo-poo'ed by the reviewers. And come to think of it, i have done at least 10 that were similar.
  24. All are fine right here on both Internet Explorer and Firefox.
  25. Perhaps you need to actually edit your profile, enter your password there and so on in order for the change to 'take'. Perhaps turn off weekly email then turn it back on again. But, how soon after you changed your coords, did the weekly email come out? It might be that it had already been generated.
