  1. Thank you VERY much. That was exactly what was happening. I was fiddling with it so much when I was using it in my vehicle and when I would mark a placemark by accident and then delete it, it would still freeze the map. I've got it straightened out now. Thanks again.
  2. I just picked up a Garmin Montana 600 to use on my boat and for general hiking and geocaching trips. The problem is, I can't figure out how to make the navigation arrow stay centered on the screen and have the map move underneath it as I travel. In other words, the navigation arrow slowly moves off the map as I travel and I have to move the map with my finger to bring the arrow back into view. That's crazy...what config am I missing? What good is a GPS if you position indicator eventually moves off the viewable map? I've tried all three Orientation modes - [North Up] [Track Up] and [Automotive Mode] and none of those changed the way it behaves. I know I must be missing something... Any help is appreciated.
  3. Uummm...no, it shouldn't be "free and for all". Geocaching is a fun hobby that people who choose to may participate in(and for free to a certain degree)...it's not a privilage that everyone "deserves". Jeez...sorry, just hits a nerve with me when someone whines because they can't get everything they want for free. Don't tell me there are members here who participate in a hobby that requires electronic hardware and transportation to take part it and can't afford $30 bucks a year if they so choose, bacause I believe that is BS. Pay it and get the perks, or don't and move on with your life.
  4. I'm new to this, but I have to admit, searching for a micro in a park tree line, or out in the country, where you could easily hide a decent sized cache does get a little frustrating. I know I'm a newbie, but it's not much fun not finding a chapstick sized cache in the middle of the woods. For now, I'm just going to filter out micros until I get more experience...just saying.
  5. I enjoy metal detecting and have been doing it for a few years now. But I don't find the idea of combining geocaching and metal detecting very appealing. The real fun in metal detecting is NOT knowing what you're digging up and the hope and surprise when it may be something interesting like a really old coin or lost ring, etc. Now, digging up something just to re-bury it somewhere else seems kinda silly to me. But hey, to each his own. Also, there are many state and federal laws that specifically address where metal detecting is prohibited...and the list gets longer every year. Basically for this sport to take off all the hides would have to be buried out in the middle of nowhere or on private property with the owners permission...and I don't think many property owners will want strangers showing up on their property to dig holes again and again. And you better know the laws of your state before even thinking of pulling out a metal detector in a National or State Park, Preserve, WMA, Historical Sites, etc, etc. You can get yourself in SERIOUS trouble and ignorance of the law is no excuse.
  6. Edited to add - Nevermind, I just noticed you can only buy these items in bulk, oh well. Various models...the threaded aluminum ones at the bottom look pretty interesting... Link to various small metal tins...
  7. Thanks for the info. Yeah, now that I think about it a little more and understand the process a little better I see where screen size and available resolution would definately limit what you can actually see and use on a gps screen. What I think I will do is print some 11"x17" - 1:24 & 1:12.5 hard-copies to bring along and use as a reference. This might help me learn to "get the feel" of looking at a gps screen. Below is an image off of the website of the map I downloaded for my state. When I view it on my gps it is much "busier" and there is so much going on it seems to make things more confusing than clarifying things. Maybe I need to check and see if I've got some other overlays on it that is just making it too cluttered. Thanks for the input. Edited to add - And these images are from an Oregon300, and I'm guessing my screen is even smaller than that.
  8. I've pretty new at this but I have been picking up as much info as I can, mainly at GSPFileDepot, for downloading various topos and other overlays. I just got a Garmin 60csx and all the topos I've found and downloaded don't seem to look quite right(kind of cartoonish)...or maybe I'm just expecting a different image than what's possible to download to a gps. Below are a couple of snap-shots of topos that I view and print from mytopo.com and I really like the look of these. Is it possible to download these images and use them as a basemap? I've got other gps units that I use for street navigation, so I'm not worried obout losing the original basemap. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!!! 1:50,000 1:25,000
  9. I'm sure this link has been posted before, but I just ran across it while searching for info on my 60CSX which UPS should be delivering tomorrow... Good 60CSX info
