  1. Thank you for the replies. It helps a lot. I understand what you are saying about leaving caches behind. I put a lot of time and effort into them and I didn't want to just abandon them or give them away. I will reuse the names in another way, mix it up and put them out there.
  2. I had 5 caches that I disabled, removed and since been archived, over the past 9-10 months. We relocated out of state for work and I wanted to know, is it possible to bring these caches out of the archives and activate them again? Or do I have to start over? If I have to start over, can I use the same cache names, etc? Thanks in advance.
  3. I saw a reply to this topic where someone mentioned, hiking out into the woods just for a micro. Last weekend, I went hiking into the woods for a cache where the CO said, you could reach it either from the park or the church. The woods (dense) are between them. So, since I was in the park I went that route. I thought I was ready. I had on long pants so as to not get mosquito bites. After about 20 mins of pulling out of thorns and nearly twisting my ankle, I came to a creek. The creek wasn't the problem. The problem was, it was 20ft straight down (like a cliff) and 20ft up the other side. I looked at my GPS and it said the cache was on the other side. I was not expecting this with a 3 difficulty in terrain. I walked up and down the creek looking for a good place to cross without needing climbing gear to get out. After searching for a spell, I gave up and concluded I needed to approach from the church. It was getting late so I called it a day. The next morning, I was covered in spider bites all over my legs. they were so bad, I couldn't sleep they were so itchy. So, not only was I mad that the CO didn't accurately rate the terrain or the gear you might need but I came away with a dozen spider bites. It's just part of the "fun" I guess. Although finding Letterbox caches with no stamp and no pads are highly frustrating for me, especially when no one mentions they're missing and it's obvious the CO has not been keeping up with their caches.
  4. I used to have a garmin Montana years ago and I have a marine gps I use but this is so user unfriendly! Thanks I will look at the link.
  5. I have a couple questions; first, what map is best for geocaching? I’ve got the topo loaded (disabled the others) and when I try to navigate to a cache it says, “route calculation error. Maps do not have routable roads in this area” (I’m in the car in a parking lot). Second, I can not get *most/all* caches to load. And no, there are no filters loaded. For example, i’m Sitting 50 yards from my latest find (using my smart phone) and this cache is nowhere on the cache list on my garmin. This not a brand new cache either. Is there a way for it to update caches? thanks!
  6. I found a *virtual* cache about a week ago and I sent the CO, 2 messages since then and haven't heard one peep. The cache instructions clearly say that you have to send the clues to the CO before logging or the log will be deleted. How long is reasonable to wait? It's been 2 months since the last log. What happens if I don't hear at all?
  7. I had a trip planned out of state. I was only going for a couple days so I didn't have a lot of time. I gathered up some local TB's and I did a lot of research trying to find the best "hotel" near where I was staying. Long story, short, the hotel was supposed to have like 25+ TB's in it. Do you know how many I saw? 5. I went to another one before then, locally, and was suppose to be another hotel. It had about a dozen listed. I found none! Not a one! While I have lost TB's myself, it's another lesson in frustration when you find an empty hotel. Isn't there a way for CO's to remove TB's from their caches and place in a "missing" category. My queries are virtually useless now because so many caches list TB's but have none.
  8. The other confusing thing was, I emailed the geocache HQ for clarification and basically was told to “try” my idea and it was up to the reviewer. Guess I will and see what happens...
  9. How could it be interpreted as commercial if one is a "fan" of the brand? I mean, I see movie themed caches, caches referring to freight railroads, visitor's centers, why not harley motorcycles, kawasaki jetskis or maybe boeing airplanes or airforce planes? What if I picked a movie that had harley motorcycles in it? Would that seem less commercial?
  10. Let me state it this way; the "landmark" is in front of a business. From where the question mark is, relates to the business the landmark is in front of. For example, let's say the question mark is on a harley motorcycle dealer and the clues would lead you to a place exactly 2.5 miles from that dealer to a retailer that specializes in high performance motorcycle jobs and the sign out front has a harley motorcycle on top. If you know it's motorcycle themed and you "googled" motorcycle themed retailers in the area, it's only going to bring up a couple and how many are going to be exactly 2.5 miles away?
  11. I understand about out-of-towners but I think the majority would be local or family of locals. If I make it too obvious, then it would be too simple. I would state that this landmark would be exactly, "X" miles away so there's limited options as to direction. We'll play with it some more but thanks for the advice...
  12. We're pretty new at this but our club (unrelated to caching) thought about having a themed mystery cache. We would have the question mark over a building that begins the theme. The clue would direct you to a place less than a few miles away where there's a "landmark". Although it's not an official landmark, the clues would narrow down where this place is. Trust me, there isn't another landmark like this anywhere in the area. Then, once you find the landmark, you enter the name of the landmark into the checker to get the cache coordinates. Where the cache would be themed along with the whole thing. Is that allowed? Directing someone to a place w/o coordinates?
  13. Thanks for the input. The business is a luggage retailer and photos are a good idea but perhaps the "race" between two TB's would be better. Not sure, will run by coworkers and see what they think....
  14. We're debating about dropping a TB within a metro area of a large US city. It's to celebrate the 40th yr of business for my company. We would like it to visit 40 states in 1 year. My question is, is this too lofty a goal? I've seen bugs travel for years w/o getting to their goal. If anyone has a suggestion for a more realistic goal, I'd be happy to hear it.
