  1. Geocats, OP, BooBooBee,and Naturesprite: I rode my bke today from the 101 at the top of Cuesta Grade on West Cuesta Ridge all the way to the cache at Cerro Alto. (I had to hike the last 1/2 hour). It is over 16 miles round trip. Of course you can use your vehicle to get very close. The gate is open now where the pavement ends. This is how it compares to East Cuesta: The ride is harder than East, but the views of the Morros are better. Also I could see the point at Cayucos, Valencia Peak, Pt. Sal, and Atascadero. (Unfortunately I forgot my camera.) You need long pants when you go on the hike, 'cause once you've found the cache you will want to bushwack it to the very top.(I had on bike shorts and got a bunch of superficial sratches.) East Cuesta has better and taller trees and much better rock formations. I only encountered(1) car on East and encountered (6) cars and (2) motorcycles on West.
  2. See you all there at 6. BTW, where exactly are we going?
  3. Let's meet, eat, and geospeak on the 18th
  4. Any Saturday in November is good for me. Wow, that's a bummer about Cerro Romauldo being closed. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise though. I've just been asked to be a scout master again, so now it means that I can't take the kids on that hike, which might be a good thing 'cause back in 2000 when I took a group of about 9 kids up there and had dinner, they made me super nervous 'cause they were dangling their legs off the side and were pushing each other!! I could NOT enjoy my dinner at all and had to turn my head! Oreo Pony, I noticed that earlier this year you were inquiring about the difficulty level of biking DOWN the High/Lowe road and seemed a little spooked, wondering if it would be dangerous for your kids. Except for the very top 1/3 mile, the road is nice and wide, and has a very even grade, except there are some shallow drainage ditches that cut across it. I don't think that going down would be any problem at all for your kids as long as they watch out for the DRAINAGE DITCHES. (This of course assumes that they will be coming down at a GENTLE speed and not BLASTING DOWN FULL TILT THROTTLE like BooBooBee did.) HOWEVER, GOING UP is definitely a workout - NOT killer, but still definetely strenuous. Unless your kids are good hill climbers and can climb LONG grades, they might be pushing their bikes most of the way up.
  5. A pizza meet and greet sounds great!
  6. I can camp the weekend of the 29th!! Govt. extended the contract completion date.. NO weekend work.YES! So, OP and Geocats, are you guys still interested?
  7. Hey all POC members: I suppose most of you already know this, but I found out after leaving a cache on an 11,000 ft. mountain in Utah that it is illegal to leave ANYTHING in a designated Wilderness Area. Since a storm was happening the next two days after I left the cache and I left Utah the following day, I asked the Utah Geocachers to help me out.( I even offered a reward). Someone took me up on it right away and hiked up in-between snow storms and retrieved the cache. The Utah geocache admin review did note that in turning it down for publishing that it was a fabulous site that I had picked!!
  8. Geocats: It was good to see you yesterday and I appreciate your passion for local/California geology and sharing with me. BTW, you're looking great! Anyways, it looks like I might not have to work on the weekend of the 29th. (I should know for sure on Monday.) So I might camp if you and Oreo Pony are going to camp. There is however some other things happening, such as Jackson Browne at Avila Resort at 12 noon and a local blues guitartist named Stubby who is gonna be at the Atascaero VFW on the night of the 29th.
  9. I have to work weekends for the rest of the month
  10. [showStop Posted on Sep 22 2005, 09:23 AM One less cache... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=109462 ] So, who's gonna 'fess up and claim ownership of this cache And which cache is it... I mean was it?
  11. A Campout out at San Simeon sounds grrreat! We love the area and doing some caching in Big Sur and/or Hunter Ligget is something I would really like to do. Thanks everyone for all the support and helping out yesterday
  12. My neice and her girl scout troup are going to show up. They wil be bringing their own compasses. Also, I will look through my folders as I believe their might be a couple of geocachers who said they are coming, but might not have posted on the webpage.
  13. Geocats, I just read the article in New Times. Sounds like you WOWED the writer with your geocaching skills The only thing is, he didn't use the geocaching name that we all know you by, soooo how do we really know it was you ? (just kidding!) Great article and look forward to seeing you at the Orienteering Event.
  14. Hey Naturesprite, What went wrong on Sunday? We didn't meet any girls! (And we had all kinds of writing instruments, paper, AND (4) hands).
  15. Did anybody see the article and picture in the Santa Maria Times on Tuesday, Aug 30, 05 about the BOMB SCARE that was reallly a sound recorder hidden in the bushes? Except for the wires, it looks like it could be a cache container!! I guess BooBooBee already had one of her caches mistaken for a bomb back in April! It just so happens, that I know and have done business with the sound engineer who was hired by the Fairpark to hide several of these bombs, ur, I mean caches, uh, I mean sound recorders! BTW, I went to OP's El Dorado and retreived the TB Bare Bear and put it in the Christmas Cache by Ave Paloma. I hope that lots of Poison Oak Cachers and their friends are coming to the Orienteering Event on Sept 17.
  16. Gaters! Thanks for reminding me I've gone through 3 pairs of socks since C'ISHUMU so I think I better get a pair of gaters soon Yeah, the weather up there is unusually cool for this time of year. I went to Templeton on Saturday and it was not only cool, but we had to don sweaters by 7 p.m. OP, I explained geocaching to my Aunt and cousins and used some of your cache hides for examples. They seemed to think it was pretty cool
  17. Hey, my black Lab Riley is 5 months and I take her cachin' about once a week. I have to bring treats for her to eat while I examine the cache or else she'll try to EAT the cache! I'm sort of lame and can't figure out how to transfer her picture from Pt. Sal Panorama http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?II...ba0&LID=9241530
  18. Well, it really is official now, I am definitely a Poison Oak Catcher as well as Cacher (I forgot to use Technu) It's only on one leg though and mild, but my wife HAS REQUESTED that I sleep in the spare bedroom for now.)
  19. Hi Avepaloma, I'll be glad to be your guide. We had a good time today, but we all got cut up and scratched to a little bit. (Check out our logs for C'ISHUMU). We were all ready to go home by the time we got back to the cars. Will have to do the other nearby caches some other time. Will probably wait until November to go again in order to be guaranteed that the views will be clear. Thanks for all the great caches you've been hiding. Hope to see you on Sept. 17 at El Chorro Park for the Orienteering Event.
  20. Naturespite: Can do what you discussed. See ya this Saturday.
  21. I'll be there on Sept 17. Let me know what I can do to help
  22. Hey Naturesprite, i'm willing to help you set up the course. That way maybe I'll glean something extra. I did a few orienteering courses with the scouts, but I don't think I did the merit badge.
  23. Count me in on orienteering! I'll bring more food until we're all so stuffed that we orient ourselves on our backs for a nap!
  24. When I went to the Forest Service to get my adventure pass today, it turns out that the last Saturday of each month you don't need one. (I got an annual pass anyways 'cause I expect to use it quite a bit. Got the rope. Weather forecast is for hot on Saturday and sunny! Geocats: I don't understand the bearing diagram either, but do want to try figure it out.
